I took a 1981 S3 2.25 D for the MOT last week. It was smokier than a smoky thing, so for a bit of a laff and some rough science - I tipped just over 2-litres of out-of-date Tesco sunflower oil in the tank - about 1/4 full on the guage. Took it for the test and it passed! only just, mind, and the smell was quite distinctive as well.
Mr tester (Dex) "what the f*** is that smell?
Me "sunflower oil"
Mr tester "B****x"
Me " no, really - there's two litres of it in the tank"
Mr tester "what the f*** did you put that in there for?"
Me "It cuts down the smoke"
Mr tester "Don't be daft, how can burning oil cut down the smoke?"
Me "it does when it's up to temperature"
Mr tester "Can't see it meself, still, here's your MOT, that thing stinks!"

There you go, how scientific do you want it?

Had a similar experience just last week

Mr Tester - 'That smells like a chippy'

NAJW - 'Legal Bio-Diesel'

Mr Tester - 'No problems with emissions there then'

NAJW - 'Thank You'

Shame about the ball joint that failed though sad.gif

oil's well that ends well.

I guess if one was planning a trip across the antarctic one would fill one's tank with cooking oil so when one felt peckish, and one would due to t he extreme coldness, one could remove the tank cap and have a quick suck via a straw - the most efficient way of getting calories.

SVO being thicker is known to clean the fuel lines & injectors, id keep running a bit in that S3 & watch the smoke reduce.
