  1. Thanks for the additional info all - that's great! I haven't got a clue how to do any of that myself but it gives me some suggestions to take forward to someone who can! Much appreciated as always.
  2. :-( sorry to hear it's got worse. Have you checked your fuel pipes under the boot floor for corrosion?
  3. Hi all. Had another go at getting air out of the fuel system last night and so far so good seems to be starting better again but now seems a bit rough. What have I done? Maybe get it booked in for next week to get timing checked as already suggested.
  4. Brilliant - thanks very much! I was searching under the wrong name...
  5. Apologies - it's me again... Does anyone know the part number for the foam ventilation/cabin filter that runs along underneath the windscreen. Mine just disintegrates on touch and lets things through into the air vents now - blossom, leaves, twigs, small dogs... Have looked at a couple of the usual parts providers and can't find it so am maybe calling it the wrong thing? Thanks.
  6. If you could let me know what you find, I'd be grateful.
  7. I knew I would forget something in my initial post - when idling normally at start up (i.e after the funny noise has stopped) the revs do surge up and down a little - we aren't talking loads but you can see the rev needle moving up and down a bit with the corresponding change in engine note. Thanks...
  8. Nice one - thanks Ian - hadn't thought of that. Totally off topic, but someone has brought in a really nice series 1 to work today - brilliant! Made me smile!
  9. Hi all, Hope you can help with this one and will say from the start that I appreciate it's difficult to try and help out when given a description of a noise over the forum! OK - when starting from cold the engine fires up fine but for about 10 seconds or until the throttle is blipped the engine is at low revs and very rattly/chattery sounding. No smoke at all and then it settles to a more normal but still slightly low idle. I have recently had the cambelt done, cleaned the intercooler, new fuel filter, new air filter and have also tweaked the fuel pump a touch but I recall it did do this once or twice before all of the above were done, but it's happening more frequently now. Once it's warm it starts normally, but then the above can happen again after a couple of hours. I was wondering what your thoughts are - I'm thinking it could be that the fuel sedimenter needs cleaning out and that the start up symptoms are lack of fuel to begin with. Or it could be a knackered injector, or possibly lift pump... One more thing - doesn't seem to have been any change to mpg either just feels a bit down on power (as per my previous post about checking the wastegate). Thanks in advance!
  10. Air filter is clean. It doesn't smoke at all - that's part of what makes me think something isn't quite right
  11. Cheers for all the info RRB. That's great. I've cleaned the intercooler and fit new hoses already which didn't seem to make any difference. EGR is blanket off already so will keep working thru the list! Part of me was wondering if it's just me having got used to newer and faster cars since I had my last discovery but still think it's not pulling quite right.
  12. Thanks for the extra info RRB. The wastegate was free so not sure what the issue is. TUrned the fuel pump up a touch and it's much better but didn't want to just ignore it and potentially mask an issue by just turning the fuel up.
  13. Thanks guys. Can't see you pic on the work computer Les, but will look at home later. Thanks for the speedy response!
  14. Hello all, Can someone please explain to me exactly where the wastegate actuator rod is, and how to get to it? (or even better show me a picture or diagram). I think I know where it is: between the engine block and the turbo itself – the rod that is just out of reach of my only pair of pliers… Just wanted to check it is actually what/where I think it is so I can check it's not seized up. Thanks.
  15. That's kind of what I meant above - I'm pretty sure my D1 was a particularly bad example! I just can't afford to be in the same circumstances again. Thanks again for the info - I was hoping to be able to get arounhg 30mpg out of a D2 but guess a certain amount of that comes down to driving style. Am averaging about 34mpg out of the Mazda (2 litre petrol) but that can be fairly tedious - at least driving slowly in a landy I'd still be enjoying myself!
