  1. HI Thanks everyone. I disconnected the glow plug lead, and insulated it-then tested it-the fuse did not blow then I connected up the glow plugs one by one, and tested them until I found the culprit....glow plug no.4! Happy New Year!
  2. just back from working this week, sorry for the late reply Thanks for all the advice, I will take a look when i get a moment over xmas! Merry Christmas all!
  3. one other thing. would the short circuit be located between the relay and the glow plugs? or could it be anywhere?
  4. Hi All I am trying to get the glow plugs working on the car. (Discovery 1, N-reg, immobiliser disconnected) The circuit for the relay is all wired in and works. there is a fused connect (60A) straight to the battery. I have tested for continuity from the relay to the glow plugs at 1.5 ohms. what happens is when the circuit is activated the fuse blows straight away. It looks like I have a short-circuit, I have yet to get down and dirty and look for a bare wire. what I am wondering is 1. Could the short circuit be due to the disconnected immobiliser circuit still being live? 2. If I were to disconnect the yellow/black from the relay to glow plugs (it disappears into a spider and I do not know what is going on in there) and put in another wire direct from the relay to the glow plugs, would that possibly cut out the short-circuit, or is it likely to be there anyway? 3. there is a strange little plate on the engine side of the bulkhead just close to the washer reservoir. what is it? it appears to be functioning still, but it ends in a dead end...(i dont know if this is relevant) hope that makes sense Jamie
  5. hi Sieraferry, sorry for the delayed reply. it has been a bit mad here. i did the above, but there is no earth coming through thanks jamie
  6. hi Sierrafery, thanks. ill take a look tomorrow. (the alarm/immobilizer has been disconnected, the lights still flash though) Jamie
  7. hi, that info would be a help wouldn't it? its a 300tdi on an N-Reg Disco 1 Jamie
  8. Hi All, My glow plugs light used to come on. Then (I do not know if it is related) when the solenoid packed up, they stopped coming on and never have since, even though I got a new solenoid The car starts fine except lots of white smoke. I know the engine can start ok at low temperatures, but the principle of it is really bugging me! I have got a replacement timer switch/relay but still no joy. I have tested the wires and have 12v on the thing yellow/black wire, and 12v on the orange/brown wire, when it is connected to the battery (I say this as bizarrely the orange/brown wire was hidden inside a fabric tube and when the solenoid packed up (and I could not start the car) I opened the bonnet but did not see this attached to anything) (not that I knew it was there TBH))) I have tested the thick yellow and black wire, at the glow plugs, but there does not seem to be any joy. a couple of confusing things, I do not know if they are related...there is a small wire and connector near the oil filter sensor (which has a sensor attached) also there is another wire and connector hanging about near the solenoid. are these anything to do with the timer switch. all help gratefully received Jamie
  9. Hi. Thanks for the advice. I figured a diff would be the way to go. Yes, I had just put the prop shaft back on (30 miles or so earlier). Jamie
  10. Hi I hope someone can help Yesterday I was driving my disco 1 when the rear pinion shaft sheared off. Photos attached. What will have caused this, is it just wear and tear l? I am thinking of replacing the rear diff with a 2nd hand unit. Is that the correct thing to do? Or should I do the whole rear axle as I had to drive home 7 miles with a leaking diff. Cheers Jamie
