  1. Thank u very much for the swift replies, and the donning of anoraks... off to register to the S1 club, looks like plenty of perusing to be done on the subject, should keep me busy for the next few evenings at least... ty again H
  2. As per the title, can anyone on here help me identify this bulkhead please? It has an ID plate on it, but i doubt its the genuine one. Its held on with 3 screws, but going by the missing one it looks like its had a rivet chiseled off... ID number is 36101572, which i believe refers to a 1953 basic model. Construction is alloy over a steel frame. Is this normal for that year? should it not be all steel? It has all the holes for left and right hand drive, left side blanked off as does the left side floorplate. with what looks like factory covers. When i first aquired it a V8 and a rollcage had already been fitted, hence much chopped about... Any info as to what year or model its from would be greatly appreciated. More photos of the engine side in a min... Cheers H
  3. Just did a latenight photoshoot...resized my photos to fit the site...But now it wont let me upload them, the option window thing i used the other day to upload photos seems to be absent.. any ideas or suggestions as to what im doing wrong would be greatly appreciated...
  4. not got any good piccys of the clearance ( just my profile photo, doesnt really show it) but i will try and take some tommorow in daylight with the wheels fully stuffed up into the standard arches... just went out in the rain/snow to take a few pictures an my batteries went flat..... (hope thats the right smiley) If im really bored in the morning i might pop a big wheel on the scrapper with standard suspension, and take a few clearance shots ( if u dont mind looking at rust) only issue i can think of is at the back depending on how big your rear silencer is...
  5. running 305 75r16 on 8x16 modulars for the last 6 years or so, had them on a 90 with standard suspension with no rubbing at all, currently got them on a 90 with a 3 inch lift with longer shocks, no problems... no idea what offset tho... can nip out to the shed and measure one of my spares if someone would be so kind as to remind me where to measure the offset from...
  6. I like the sound of that method, one headlight is always better than none... that just leaves the dependable defender switch as the weak link, is it legal to have another switch mounted on the dash somewhere? if so, then if any one component fails, be it switch relay bulb or fuse then u wont suffer from a complete blackout situation.it would take at least 2 components to have failed for that to happen. which would give u safety factor that the standard setup cant offer.
  7. yes im sure the quality of relays and defender light switches have moved on at a pace since then, altho not necessarily in the same direction... the relay in question was a marine starter motor relay, less than 2 years old at the time of failure... it failed due to condensation forming inside the relay corroding the contacts. even tho it was mounted in a waterproof box... but ...up against a cold bulkhead. the air already in the box would contain enough moisture defender light switches mounted on the steering column are relatively dry and cosy. i was more thinking along the lines of the legal and insurance repercussions of lights failing causing an accident due to to an OEM light switch with standard wiring going wrong vs a homebrewed wiring loom not installed and certified by a qualified auto electrician.. going wrong... H
  8. hi consider fitting a second relay in parallel on each circuit... did the same relay conversion to a mk 1 vw scirocco storm i owned. about 22 years ago now... worked fantastic, really bright lights untill.... driving along one night on an unlit country road in the rain...had to dip my lights for an oncoming car ... which was the exact same moment when the dip relay decided it no longer wanted to work.... had to flick it back to main beam kinda quick... the driver of the oncoming car decided to show his disaproval of my 600 odd wattsits of main beam plus spotlights by turning his main beam plus spotlights on... a sphincter twitchin few seconds i am in no hurry to repeat...
  9. the spare plain green wire that u can see in the photos above shares the same pin on the connector as the plain green that goes to the temp and fuel gauges. i think its just a positive switched on by the ignition, could well be a stabilized feed on later models... i used the spare green as the feed to my volt gauge, which registers anywhere from 12.5v with ignition on engine off upto nearly 14v with the engine running with some revs on. the red wire with white trace is the feed for the dash lights the short black one is an earth the long black one is also an earth the long brown wire as far as i can remember is a permanent positive. the green with black trace that comes from terminal 1 on the fuel gauge goes via the loom to the big spade connector on the sender unit on the fuel tank... not had any fires in the 9 years orso that iv owned it...
  10. quick update..grabbed a spare instrument binnacle cluster thingymajig out the shed complete with wiring loom off an 89....same color coding on wires as my 84 drivers side terminal is marked "1" has a green wire black trace goes into loom passenger side terminal is marked "2" has a plain green wire which comes from temp guage terminal "2" then into the loom.. ps...mine is right hand drive...if yours aint, adjust driver passenger side accordingly
  11. sorry no camera but, passenger side terminal has a plain green wire which is shared with left hand terminal on temp gauge. drivers side terminal on fuel guage has a green wire with a black tracer . just had a quick peek at my b reg 90... hope it helps
  12. Hi had the same problem with mine. the tube that holds the dipstick is attached to the block with a union nut that compresses an olive around the tube. they have a nasty habit of coming loose allowing the tube to push too far into the sump causing a false high oil level readiing hope this helps...
