  1. Hi folks, Well, the latest little job on my 'work in progress' is the replacement of a faulty rear salisbury diff. Having not been trained as a mechanic, apart from the usual on the job Land Rover training on my 110, I am at a junction not knowing which way to turn. My problem is that I know nothing about diffs and as I need to source one before I fit it, what sort do I buy??? I have been told that you do not need a diff stretcher if you are replacing the diff if it is still in its casing??!! what does that mean? better still, what does one look like? I have seen photos on google and ebay but not sure what a diff in its casing looks like as there are so many different phots showing different angles and bolts and stuff but no photo saying 'this is a salisbury replacement diff still in its casing. Can anyone please help me by posting or emailing a photo or picture of what I should be looking for. I only want to replace the diff and not the whole axle because of the work involved (I do not have the experience). Many thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Kev English
  2. Hiya everyone, I am the President of Peterborough LandRover Club, based, as the name says, here in Peterborough, in Cambridgeshire. We are always on the lookout for new and interesting things to do as a club. Recently I have read a story in Landrover Monthly by David Lovejoy, titled 'Get your kicks on root 66' which covered wooded greenlanes. I have a question .... where are the wooded greenlanes? The story shows one abroad but I am stuck finding any here in the UK, especially near Peterborough. Have any members got any ideas on the location of any wooded greenlanes? I could really do with a list of as many as possible to keep us busy, if such a list exists. We have had a few off road and greenlane days but now want something kind of in the middle, harcore greenlaning so to speak. I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help and you're more than welcome to join us! All the best, Kev English Peterborough LandRover Club ('92 Defender 110 (CSW with 12 seats)
  3. Very nice, I've just bought some Modulars for my 110 and now looking to get some 235 85 16s to go on them.
  4. Thanks for the info guys. I agree, I don't really want to change everything to 24v, it's just, I've heard of some Landys having 24v and just wondered what this means. The other leads ARE in fact completely plastered in electrical/duct tape so as not to short out anything. Me thinks that a new battery is deffo in order as I've read that even vehicle batteries as everything else these days don't last forever. I'll be having a shop around for a battery of the type you have mentioned, any ideas of a cost? My local motor factors/battery supplier may have one, so I'll go have a ganda tomorrow. Many thanks again to you all ...... if in doubt and needing honest advice, ask my friends on LR4x4. Kev English
  5. Hello Boys and Girls out there in Land~Rover land. I have, what I think at this time of yaer,a common problem. Battery won't start my Defender!! During very cold weather I am yet again experiencing trouble starting my Defender after a cold night or a day or so without use. The engine turns over but will not start, then it just dies out, leaving me to get my wifes tiny Mazda MX5 to jump start it,which it does instantly. Under the front passenger seat there is the usual battery, plus two leads for an extra battery, possibly used in its previous life as a Police vehicle, which it was when first registered back in 1992. My question/s is/are ... what is needed if I was to decide to use two batteries thus giving 24 volts for use of extra toys in the future or perhaps a caravan etc? do I have to fit an extra alternator? is it the norm' to have a switch for using/switching over to either battery? does having two batteries mean that it is only possible if you have a 24v set up? and also am I talking a load of rubbish and the problem can be solved by purchasing a brand new battery because that's what everyone does as it's common knowledge that if it won't start, the battery is a gonna? Any help you can give on this matter would be very appreciated as I really have no experience of,or information about batteries. Thanks in advance for any ideas you can share, Kev English
  6. I run tubes with ex mod tubeless tyres on original steel wheels. I have experienced approx 10-12 flat tyres in the last 3 years!! sometimes due to nails etc, sometimes due to bits of flaky crud in the tyre/tube space. Can't wait 'til I can afford the modular wheels without tubes ... along with a new set of doors all around as the ones I have got suffer from defenderdooritis (a common ailment I understand) causing rotting of the steel bits, a bit of soundproofing so I can hear what passengers are saying (quite handy tho' when the wifey is yabbering on), a new paint job and ..... errrr, you get the icture.
  7. My middle row doors are on the way out...strike that, they're knackrd!

  8. Hi Jon, yeah, just looked at Fraxs link, Range Rover do look good.
  9. Cheers frax, quite helpful. They do look comfy, wouldn't ever get me out of my 110. Like the idea of a fixed seating position (makes it a bit more personal, at least no one else can drive my beloved haha)
  10. BRING ON THE SNOW!! My Defender needs to stretch its legs.

  11. Where's the snow? Just the other day, whilst driving my beloved Defender 110, the road was once again taken over up by some silly little cars with Carlos Fandango style drivers peeking over the steering wheels with attitude. The usual taxi hinderance was on show too, with the generally accepted disregard for anything else on the road with not even a subtle wave of thanks when let through a small gap between parked cars, whilst coming in my opposite direction. How funny it is when sometimes I've had just as much as I can take of these silly little cars and their silly little drivers taking the Mick, that I refuse to pull over and stop to let them through, so as they drive by, they try their hardest to ignore me as if to say "flippin 4x4s, let him wait for me, Gods gift", instead, I drive in a straight line right up to their front bumper, then gesture them to reverse all the way back (quite a scary view of my black bullbar and spot lights in their view, cutting out the sunlight and towering above them) along the road so as not to get scratches (battle scars to you and me) on their shiny little cars. "BRING ON THE SNOW AND ICE", I say, then we'll see the silly little drivers of the silly little shiny cars all around the country asking the REAL Kings and Queens of the road, (Landrover drivers) "please could you help me, my car's stuck". Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr;)
  12. Hello there, I'm sure that once upon a time, I read that some other makes of vehicles (other than the great Defender) seats may fit into a Defender. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge with regards to this? Would it be possible to,say, fit a Rover car drivers seat directly into a Defender, or would the rails and fittings need to be transferred? My drivers seat has to say the least, seen better days. I'm not too keen on fitting a seat cover over the eyesore and not really all that keen on the replacement option of another plastic covered Defender seat (a nice warm, comfy, material sort for the freezing weather in the mornings upon us would be lovely, especially just after going around my 110, scraping all 14 windows of ice). Any ideas folks? any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Kev English.
  13. Hiya Folks, I purchased a second hand bull bar from the Peterborough LRO show autojumble, fitted it, bought some spot lights which were wired up to a seperate switch on the dashboard and haven't had any problems with regards to the police/law. I am a neighbourhood watch co-ordinator and mix/talk to the local police on a regular basis, the only comment I have received from the police officers in my neck of the woods here in Peterborough is "wow, that makes it look beefier, it makes it an even safer vehicle to drive now". Keep it mucky !! Kev English
  14. Cheers Guys, I think this is a well known company, it's the one that advertises on ebay. £100 each door if you take off and replace yourself, only thing ... I don't think I could muster together 500 big ones for quite some time. Suppose I better start saving eh. I think by the time I get to 500, hell will be frozen over. Kev.
  15. Hi Folks, I have a K plate defender 110 on 233,000 miles, whose doors are to say the least... knac...... not in very good condition at all with lots of rust and rot. I was wondering if anyone knows of any companies who, at a reasonable price could refurb them? or in fact if anyone has or knows someone who is selling a full set (or donating some to a likeminded Landrover lover in the name of ressurection). I have looked on sites such as ebay for ages now to see if it's possible to pick some up which are not too expensive. There's a company near Bath who sorts them out by replacing parts for about £100 each, but as far as I can see, it would cost me loads to get there and back as I am in Peterborough in Cambridgeshire and leave them there for about two days before being able to collect them to fit them back on (or nearly £700 if they take them off and put them back on for me). I am desperate for replacements as mine are so bad and as usual I could do with a fairy Godmother looking down on me to sort me some out for next to nothing. I must be the millionth person or more who has/has had this problem as I beleive this is very common. The LRO shows autojumble in Peterborough this year brought me no joy as did last years or the year before!! "A work in progress" Landrover defenders were described to me as I bought mine, which as you all know is true. I have so many dreams for my Landrover which seem to be put on hold until I sort this out, I want to repaint it and feel the best way to prolong the life of my next doors will be to give them a good coat of waxoil in the bottoms (if only I'd owned it from new, this is what I would have done). I have already spent approx £3,000 on it since purchasing 'Grace', on things such as fuel tank, prop, UJs, brakes, welding, suspension and work for MOTs etc. I kind of have a feeling that one of you out there in Landrover land can help me. P.s the reason I need some at next to nothing (talk about taking the P!) is that my job as a registered carer for my autistic Son doesn't pay a lot and my voluntary hospital radio job doesn't pay anything. Kindest regards, Kev
