  1. I have a similar problem and as a new member have posted a thread on which I would be grateful for any of you good chaps advise.
  2. Hello, I have started a new thread on my particular problem, as I am new here - I have the same/similar problem as another author but would be grateful if my specific problems could get some help and advise. I have a Freelander 2001, 2.5 litre V6, 5 door Background: Purchased car in 2007, miles circa 21,000 at time of purchase, have to date driven it up to circa 34,000 Had some minor issues like AC gas replacement, brake pads replacement Recent issues: 1. Noticed a clicky sound when driving - took car in and was told there was something needed to be replaced as it was covered in some rust and gunge - also decided to have full service - result - the sounds that was clicking disappeared BUT another far worse sound became apparent. 2. Took car back in - the new problem was a much louder sound, like a RUMBLING under the car, running through middle all the way to front, noticeable when braking/turning etc... My mechanic initially said the propshaft needing greasing and/or coupling needed replacing - which he did BUT sound remained. Took it back in and had the propshaft replaced - but sound still remained. Having spent a few weeks backing and forting was getting peeved, so mechanic took back car and this time showed me under the car - the replacement prop shaft w as prodded and we agreed it was the source of the problem and perhaps was a faulty one. Side-effects: 1. Some other issues, brakes were squeaking - despite having has new pads replaced not along ago - this time mechanic said the discs were damaged by pads rubbing into it and he replaced BOTH disc and pads - the RESULT is that squeak appears to have gone and braking is smoother but foot goes in further when braking, is this normal? 2. Is the propshaft problem a correct diagnosis and is it consistent with what I have experienced? 3. Is the sound the result of the propshaft or the differential (whatever that is)? 4. Is the cost of the propshaft I paid for plus labour at £300 about right (I do not plan to pay for the replacement)? 5. Also noticed about the same time the car was DRAGGING when taking off and much slower when driving in general, the car is an automatic but usually VERY quick is slower speed a side effect? Now: Mechanic has replaced propshaft 2 weeks ago and while the 'chugging' sound when breaking has disappeared the 'grinding' sound noticeable beneath the car particularly on passengers die is very noticeable. the noise will disappear. I informed the mechanic of the above - and he has now said he thinks he needs to replace the bit in the middle and the bearings. Apparently the bit in the middle will cost circa £350 second hand and the bearings will be £100 a piece and we need at least, apparently. Please could anyone help me and tell me if the above is a fair price - I am in a pickle and at the mercy of my mechanic who could be telling truth or lies and I wont know the difference. I have used my mechanic for some years and have no reason to doubt his honestyi/ntegrity, but I am not mechanically minded so he could well be taking me for a ride for all I know. I would REALLY appreciate some helpful advise. Kind Regards, Flashman ps: I used to be on another Freelander forum, but have not been on it for ages, is this the same one or another incarnation? Thanks in advance.
