  1. Thanks chaps. I guess after 40 years, a respray should be expected, but I was hoping it would last longer than 10 years. Mo Murphy - would you say 2k paint would have been better suited and not suffered as much damage as the enamel paint?
  2. I'm in the process of spraying my Ninety, but I'm a little unsure of which way to go in terms of the painting system. Originally I was going to use Paintman's enamel paint and roller it. However, I've now decided to spray it instead. My mate is a sprayer and is a little concerned about using the fast drying enamel paint and would rather use a modern system. He's worried the enamel will be too soft long term, i.e. ease of scratching from hedges etc on country lanes and the fact that it will likely dull over time. My Ninety is a keeper btw, so I want it looking good for as long as possible! I can't seem to find any long term reviews about using enamel paint on Land Rovers and just wondered if anyone has any first hand experience? Thanks!
  3. Thanks Landroversforever - that certainly makes sense. Just need to find out if the larger 110 TD5 calipers will fit - anyone done this mod?
  4. I'm currently doing a nut and bolt restoration on my 1989 Ninety (it's been off the road since May). I noticed yesterday that both swivels on the front axle are leaking - I need to check what is causing this. Prior to spotting these leaks, I was hoping to upgrade the front calipers to the later td5 110 type, but were (still am) unsure if they're compatible with my existing front axle? However, now I've noticed these leaks, would I benefit in just taking the plunge and do a whole axle swap (i.e. 300tdi overwards Defender or Discovery1)? I did swap my rear drum braked axle to a disk braked version with these half shafts a few years ago, so it would be nice if they were matching front to back, but at the same time, if the later axles aren't as good as the early type, I'd rather repair what I have! Any advice on the above would be much appreciated! Thanks!
  5. Ah - why do they have to make it more complicated than necessary! Thanks for clarifying James anyway. I did find a set of genuine wings on ebay, ex military though. See here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-RIGHT-HAND-FRONT-OUTER-WING-DRIVERS-FRONT-NO-VENT-RTC6351/224150027632?hash=item343061fd70:g:C7QAAOSw1PpfV-e6 Is it me or are the spot welds quite pronounced?
  6. I'm after a new wing (side panel only) for my Ninety. RTC6351G seems to be the correct part number (without vent - I will need to drill an hole for the side repeater). Anyway, I thought the 'G' stood for 'Genuine', but it appears not, with many sites stating OEM by Britpart. Did Britpart make them for LR?
  7. I bought, what I thought was STC3722 kit, from a company on Ebay. It arrived and upon opening the package, they had in fact sent me the STC4858 kit. See attached image Looking at that, they are different lengths, so am I correct in thinking that these aren't interchangeable without further mods to either the rear diff/propshaft? The company are saying they've sold a few of these under STC3722 and have never had a problem. Cheers!
  8. Cheers chaps - I've got some RTV/Instant Gasket Sealant in the garage - fingers crossed it'll do the job!
  9. My transfer box has always had a leak on the front output shaft. Easy thing to sort out I thought - whip the old seal out and pop a new seal in. Well, it didn't quite go to plan! Before I removed the oil seal it was obvious as to where the oil was leaking from -it looks like the person who replaced the seal last time had used a sharp screwdriver to remove the oil seal and has stuck a lovely groove into the casing, so the oil is leaking under the seal along the groove! Is there any way I can repair this groove with some sort of sealant? Don't really want to replace the whole unit for such a 'small' problem. Cheers!
  10. Thanks to the chaps that have completed the questionnaire. Much appreciated.
  11. David - I understand your concerns. Maybe, my girlfriend should have used the word "green laning" as opposed to offroading? I basically copied and pasted what she wanted me to say on the forum, without any thought of how it might come across. Not sure if you can remember, but me and my girlfriend were the people that brought to your attention the "Friends of the Peak District" letter from Julia Bradbury a couple of years ago? We, as a couple, often go green laning in the Peak District (because we both live there). Yes, she's reading "The Conservation and Management of the Countryside", but she is far from a left leaning "4x4 users will kill children" person. I really would appreciate if you could fill in the questionnaire - maybe, if you are local, we could meet up and give you some questionnaires for you and members of your group to fill in? She'd also be very interested in your comments. Many Thanks, Liam
  12. Evening chaps, Hopefully I've posted this in the right section... If anyone who lives in or ever visits the Peak District has a spare five minutes would you mind filling in this survey? My girlfriend is looking at land use/recreational conflict within the Peak District for her dissertation and it would be great to get the views of some offroaders to give balance to the hoards of walkers/horse riders etc. http://freeonlinesurveys.com/s.asp?sid=wew6aleqpe2qxa3213079 Thank you very much!
  13. I reckon I will just drill and tap. That looks like a minefield to me. I wouldn't have a clue where to start haha. Thanks anyway
  14. Thanks for the quick reply Western. Is that all it is?...Quieter? If that's the case I'll go for either 1.22 then. How hard/easy is it to swap the gears over to my original casting?...Please note I won't even pretend I know anything about gear or transfer boxes, because I don't
  15. Hi everyone, I'm about to purchase a Disco T/box (1.22) for my Defender, however, I've confused myself over a couple of points. 1) Are LT230Q boxes from a 300tdi better than the older type from the 200? 2) Do I need to drill and tap holes for the rear of the handbrake bracket? I've never done this before, so it's daunting me at the moment. Or can I swap the "casing" over? 3) Is there anything else I need/should look out for? Thanks
