  1. I have changed all the diff mounts as well ?
  2. Hi All, Sorry - I need to bring this up again ! Freelander is still making the same noise - I never cured it, but removed the prop & VCU for a quiet life. Having put it all back on, the noise is back again. It does sound like the diff, or another part of the transmission is fouling underneath - same noise as before, as if something is under a lot of tension and touching somewhere making the noise - When checking there is no obvious sign of anything touching underneath, or marks etc. It has now had a new VCU, new support bearings ( good quality ) , 2 used driveshafts , and the 3 diff mounts. Car is low mileage and good in every other respect. Any help would be much appreciated as it is driving me mad now. Thank you Bob
  3. Thanks Elbekko, Will have a careful look at this first. Bob
  4. Hi All, Had a few hesitation issues with our 4.6 P38, so I swapped the Throttle position sensor off a spare 4.6 we have. As soon as the car was started the revs increased up to around 2000 rpm. We swapped the TPS back again and the car still does it ! We have since swapped back again and it still idles very high. I was very careful when doing this. I have searched a lot of the Forums, but they all seem to suggest it needs to go in to a Main dealer, but I am really trying to avoid the cost of this, as the car is not worth a lot ! Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Bob
  5. Hi Tom, It could be just a coincidence after the sand blasting ? I had a similar noise - rather loud and got me panicking ! Check the crankshaft damper pulley ( Main pulley ) on lower front of engine that drives the 'fan' belt - the rubber damper disintegrates and causes metal to metal knocking ? Thanks Bob
  6. Thanks for the replies guys, I think it may well be diff mounts as Garry suggested - I did check them first, but it does sound like something is fouling the bodywork, or hitting underneath so I suspect the diff is moving around. It is more of a jumping around sound ! On inspection there does not seem anything wrong though ! I don't think it is diff bearings as there is no noise at all in normal driving and at slow speed there is no noise - it is only between 10 - 20 mph. I would have thought there would be considerable noise at other times if the diff bearings have failed? Still not had a chance to have another look, but will let you know when I do get to the bottom of it ! VCU bearings were new and genuine, along with the VCU when this was changed about 5 months ago, so I hope these are all fine ? Thanks Bob
  7. Thanks Les, I was hoping that would not be the problem , but thanks for your reply - car is 54 plate so not that early ? and with nice low mileage I was hoping for a freelander that would not need loads of money chucking at it - guess that was wishful thinking ! Will have a look later and try the prop off and check for roughness. Car I got the driveshafts off has only done 65k miles so I might look and see what that is like. Thanks Bob
  8. Hi All, Sorry to ask the dreaded 'what is this noise' question, but our Freelander is making a strange noise and any advice would be greatly received. Noise seems to come from rear end, possibly nearside. It happens when cornering around a small roundabout or similar, at about 10 - 20 mph. sounds like you have hit a rumble strip or got a flat tyre ! No other noises at all. I initially thought it was a cv joint - possibly inner and have replaced both driveshafts with secondhand items, but the noise is still the same ! Car has had a new VCU 3 months ago and has done 68k miles. Many thanks Bob
  9. Thanks for the info - gone for a new hub ass. now,had to swallow the £ 210 for it though !! I have now got the abs / traction control lights up on the dash - any ideas on how to clear them - is there a procedure ? Thanks Bob
  10. I have been trying to sesrch for info on a D2 rear wheel bearing / hub - is this only available as a complete hub ? Also, I did read somewhere, that the P38 hub will fit - is this correct ? Just easier to get hold of in a breakers ? Can anyone help with this ? Thanks Bob
  11. Thanks for the replies. I think mine is the earlier one, so I will go ahead and order that one - not sure if my gearbox is a bit of mixture ?? Bob
  12. Hi, Does anyone know if the series 1 and 2 primary pinions can be interchanged ? All drawings / photos look the same, yet they are obviously different. Part no.s are 518473 and 542231. Thanks Bob
  13. Thanks 80inch, sorry for delay in reply - must be series 1 box , with dipstick then - have added oil through filler hole in top of transfer box - unable to find any level plug though, so guessing level - yellow & H/L lever both working fine. Will try draining & refilling with 2.5 litres EP90, which I believe to be correct amount. If still persisting will get a recording to you. Many thanks Bob
  14. My 80 inch series 1 has developed a 'clatter' from, I beleive, the transfer box ?? - It sounds like the 2/4 wheel drive selector is partially trying to engage? The noise practically disappears when I engage 4 wheel drive, but not always completely? - It is fitted with a series 2/2a box I think - (dipstick on top) mounted to a v8 3.5. Any ideas much appreciated.
