  1. hi luckly i have another 300tdi with a 6 month old head on it so you can guess what i will be doing at the weekend. thanks ken
  2. hi all last week my disco overheated due to a water pump failure. fitted a new pump and has been fine. until now that is. on my way home tonight the engine overheated again. i stopped and checked water, all there but i checked the thermo housing and it was dry, but as soon as i opened the expansion tank and started the engine the expansion level went down and the thermo housing filled up. the problem is there was lots bubbles so i let it run to try to clear the air 15 liters of water later and still as bad. could this be a problem with the head. it has had a new head gasket about 3 months ago. puzzled ken
  3. hi i recently changed the head complete with a new gasket and head bolts and was very carefull to cover all oil/water ways from any contamination. thinking about it now i did'nt change the oil after i cooked the head and i wonder if the oil was affected by the very high temp the engine got to (i melted the temp gauge on the top of the head). i think new oil and filter may be a good start followed by a pressure switch. many thanks ken
  4. hi all my 300 tdi has decided to show me its oil light is working but only when the engine is at normal op temp. the funny thing is the higher the revs the dimmer the light becomes untill it goes out at about 3000 revs. has anyone got any ideas as to the problem as i am stumped. p.s. there is a healthy amount of oil in it!! ken
  5. hi oh well thats me £500 lighter. new head, new water pump...............+ other parts thats what i call a s***t day ken
  6. hi the head is now off. it was the gasket between pots 2/3. luckily there was a partial seal around the pistons so i was loosing compression but no water was getting into the pots. thanks for the suggestions ken
  7. hi help needed yesterday i was driving my 300tdi when i lost all coolant and overheated badly. managed to limp home stopping to refill water every 2 miles. the expansion tank had split so i have got a replacement. now however the engine tries but fails to start. lots of smoke comming out the back that looks like unburned fuel but no firing. could this be a symtom of a warped head/blown gasket. thanks. ken
  8. hi checked all the bulbs and fuses with a multimeter and no probs. i did however find some lovely blue scotch blocks. wondering if this is the problem. ken
  9. hi all my 300 tdi stop lights have decided to stop working. i have checked the stop switch with a multimeter and all is good. does anyone have other ideas that i can try as it failed the mot due ti=o this problem. many thanks in advance ken
  10. hi my air con is totaly knackerd on my disco and i was thinking about removing all the components and replacing the cooler matrix at the front with a larger intercooler in the space provided. can anyone tell me how this will affect the engine and if its worth doing. many thanks ken
  11. hi Anyone know the easiest way to test a thermostat as my engine stays cold all the time I think my thermostat may be stuck open. Many thanks

    help

hello i have just finished replacing the swivel balls on my 200 tdi (91). put everything back together but steering seemed to jam after about one turn of the wheel. i reversed back slowly and the problem seemed to clear . i then filled the balls with one shot greaseand reversed out of my drive ......BANG...... now i can't drive in high ratio (slight grinding noise) but if i put it into low ratio i have full use of gears. can anyone shed some light on this problem. many thanks ken
