7 posts in this topic

As per the title - does anyone know any way to look up OS Field numbers on a map - to show the boundarys etc without paying? Does any of the mapping software show it?

If you want to know the boundry of a proprty, so long as it's registered you can download the plans from the land registry for about £5. Not free but hardly expensive. Do it all on line.

Service is only available during working hours by the way.

GLASS have quite a comprehensive Map Room within their Library, and I think they have some sort of commercial agreement with OS, so it might be fruitful to use your personal GLASS membership, or the affiliate GLASS membership your local club has (might have).

The logic for naming fields as I understand it is to take the last to eastings and last 2 northings of an 8 figure grid referance for the centre of the field. Not long after we got our current farm a few fields we renamed when hedges we removed. Now though only the powers that be can name fields.

What logic they use to work out exactly where the centre of a field is I don't know, very few of our fields resemble regular shapes and when we renamed them it was a case of judging the middle by eye on the maps (about 25" to the mile).
