Righty Ho then - mini update

Today saw me 'cleaning' some of the parts up for the start of the rebuild.

Targets for today was the Trumpet Unit, and the Inlet Manifold and Pistons.

When I say 'Clean' I mean clean, not a 'wipe with a Rag' and the "Thattado" stylee

so many seem to think is clean, building an engine of any description, and / or espcially

one in this state of tune is only as good as the condition and cleanliness of the parts used

and similarly the cleanliness of the build itself.

So My standard of "Clean is prob not what many would expect, nor indeed do,

but it makes a HUGE Difference to the finished result and long life / performance of

the rebuilt lump

Also bear in mind the filtration on this engine had failed, and had drawn in dust - and highly

abrasive dust too, this had coated itself to the Valves inlet trumpets etc in fact everywhere

and if 100% of it is not removed then the rebuild would be a waste of time.

My method is to 1st soak parts in the parts cleaner I have (been in their 2 weeks) then remove and

scrub - toothbrushes are good, bear in mind its ali so you must not use anything abrasive - it takes time

to soak into the stuck on carbon / dirt, and also you must not use things that ali doesn't like as you equally damage

the soft ali.

I then find that rags and Brake cleaner / diesel are good to get it off, plus a tin

of FORTE Engine flush shifts some of the really stubbon carbon, sometimes it will come clean easily, sometimes its do what

you can then resoak and do again, this what I have had to do with some of the pistons today - some will 'come up'

next time, some may need a further soak, it shouldn't be rushed.

This is the difference between DIYing it and having a so called garage do it fo you - no,

they will just wipe bits with an oily rag, because your not prepared / or they won't clean things properly L:)

As such the Trumpet base (which had to be fettled back into proper shapes as ding and dents and

prev owners knocking and dented trumpets etc had taken their toll, and 1 trumpet even now (have asked re a new post

in Int ) needs gluing back in - this trumpet alone was 2 hours work reshaping the trumpets etc and then ,

the inlet another 2.5 hrs to get proper proper clean at least I can get a 1.5 inch paint brush

in the ports they are so kin huge :D ... and the pistons ....I have done 3... so still some to go :

And thats this weekends worth of cleaning results :(

When I have the rest of the Pistons done, then there are the heads, every bolt washer bracket flange etc is sitting in a

5 litre new Gallon Container of Kerosense and FORTE Engine flush, which I simply pick up shake and place another way up

as I leave the workshoop each time I am in there, when I need to start the rebuild this just gets emptied and the

contents re fettled, but will be 95% mint

Looking good Nige!! As the old saying goes "If a job's worth doing...........get Nige to do it"

Preparation is everything, whether it's your car or DIY on your house.

As you know I'm going to MS my 3.5 bog standard. Do you think it's worth shortening the trumpets at all?

I've heard that about 15mm off each one is about right, or do you think not worth the hastle on a bog standard engine.

By the way thanks for the package :D , just in the process of planning my angle of attack. Don't want to dive in with both feet just yet

Sorry forget to reply

TUP

On a small bore V* (Less than 4.6) waste of time

Shortening the trumpets makes the power shift up the rev rnage

the 4.6cc has the grunt to mask the effects, do it on a 3.4 and things become very very revvy to

get it to got

Combo is shorter trumpets AN Bigger bores right through the manifold - but

then you into serious money, and again the CC size bigger benifit more except

I have seen a 3.4 Rover V8 (sleeved) with big bore trumpets shortened and it reved

like nothing I has ever seen being over square

Buit for the french events by JED

so, answerr is NON

Nope

A chat with Mr Eales has educated me that you shouldn't / can't fit ARP studs into a Cross Bolted block, the fact

the mains caps are a snap fitmentment to the block means they would be an absolute *** to get on or off.

JEs view is that new factory bolts set and torqued correctly are more than enough, its more the con rods

(These are arrow rods with whizzy bolts) and head studs as well, where he DOES recomend ARPs,

and so it will have them, wel actualy it does already :)
