inspire90
Hello guys, I would be grateful if anyone can please tell me where to and how to check my auto transmission level. And is it something that require topping up regularly. Thanks, Inspire90.
FridgeFreezer
If you look in the part numbers forum you can download the official Land Rover "RAVE" technical manuals, they will tell you everything you need to know.
mickeyw
Or, because I am feeling helpful, you could start engine from cold, apply hand brake, engage neutral (not park) and pull the dipstick to check level. Doing this when cold is apparently important. I will add that you should check oil levels while parked on level ground. Filling is done via the dipstick hole, a small funnel or squirty bottle is required. Whether this needs doing regularly depends how much you vehicle likes to mark its territory As Fridge has suggested, the RAVE manuals are definitely worth downloading. Dorsetfreelander
Be warned, there are two nuts on the gearbox which look like filler plugs, if you undo the wrong one a bit falls off inside and you lose reverse. The box has to be stripped down to fix it. see http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=53.
RJF
I don't think the Freelander box has a dipstick (mine doesn't). The level is checked by removing a check plug on the underside of the box (you'll need a 5mm hex key) with the fluid warm. The procedure is detailed in RAVE, and also here.... http://www.myfreelander.co.uk/Transmission/mainprobs4.htm It shouldn't need regular top ups. I think the change intervals are something like 60k.
