X-Eng Pedal Box Lock - Naming Competition!

Sorry if this appears to be blatent advertising on the forum, it's not really intended to be. Read on to see why!

This was a product inspired by this forum, in this thread: http://forums.lr4x4....ndpost&p=616406

Inspired by the number of Defenders being stolen, including from some of my friends locally, I decided to try to do something about it! In the above thread, there is a discussion about pedal box locks, saying how difficult they are to store in a Defender and as such there is a real possibility of it coming to hit you in the back of the head if you brake too hard! The end result is that many people who buy them, only use them occasionally, and the rest of the time leave them at home.

This was highlighted by a chap I met at Tesco who had just had his 110 Doublecab stolen from the car park! I showed him my Cardboard mock up (as pictured in the above thread) and he said he already had a pedal lock - but it lives in the shed at home because its too dangerous to carry all the time!

Anyway, back to the point. After quite a lot of prototyping, I have something that is nearly ready for production! There is a (slightly shaky) video of it here:

I've been using it this weekend - and I really like it! OK, I'm a little biased, but I tend to be very critical of my own designs. It has turned out to work really well.

What I don't have is a good name for it! So, I wondered if the forum could suggest one? What I propose is that you suggest names, I'll short-list my favorite ones and then start a poll so you can decide! The first person who suggested the winner in THIS thread, will get the first one for free as a prize!

To keep the theme of all the other X-Eng products, it has to be X-Something. There are a number of other security products in the pipeline, so it would be good if it had a format of X-Something-Something specific to product, a bit like X-Lite Azimuth (as there are two kinds of X-Lites).

It cannot be something trademarked - like X-Box (sadly) as I don't think Microsoft would see the funny side of it!

At the moment I'm not sure how much the production version will cost as there are still some unknowns - but, as with the other security products I plan to make them as low cost as possible as the objective is to curb the number of Defender thefts more than to make millions!

My plan is to launch this and the other security products mid June 2012, possibly at the Bristol & West Show.

Looking at 'similar' products on the market it seems there have to be variations to cope with different models; whether air con is fitted, or different engines.

I don't know the detail differences, but it might be that your product name will have to take these into account, if only as a suffix.

So,

X-Pedal: Defender ; X-Pedal: Defender Auto ; X-Pedal: Series2 ; X-Pedal: Series3 ; etc.

A generic name across all your Security products might get a bit cumbersome, but these could be

X-Secure Pedal: Defender.

X-Secure Gears: Defender.

X Secure Fuel-stop: Defender.

I see there is already some overlap!!

Good Luck.

X-Off Pikeys?

I'll get me coat....

But seriously, nice bit of kit! Certainly a better solution than those clanky pedal lock-boxes. Am I correct in thinking you’ve glued a piece of rubber to the side facing the pedals to act as a non-slip surface for your feet when it’s in ‘unlocked’ mode? Also, in that vein, how well will this work with rubber mats, soundproofing etc?

Si, I've got to take my hat off to your ingenuity, a lovely bit of engineering.

Now serious face - I think i know what the answer will be but, have you had a go at trying to break into it? - using said tools of thief...

Some great suggestions there! I like X-Off P*****- though it would probably get me in to trouble!

I've tried a few ways of removing / breaking it. While it's possible - it does take some time. The biggest vulnerability is cutting off the brake pedal. I tried with a hack saw blade and gave up after 15 mins, then with an electric reciprocating saw and even that took almost 5 mins.

The plate above is just mild steel with stainless hinges, but the production version will be in Hardox Extreme or Domex which are very difficult to cut with a grinder.

You can drill out the lock - but even that took a while and then the bit that dropped inside managed to jam the mechanism (though that may not always be the case obviously).

Nothing is invulnerable however - any security device only buys you time and deterrent value. I talked to a 'grown up' vehicle security specialist who mentioned that the magic number is 2 minutes. In general that is the amount of time a potential thief will spend trying to remove something before deciding to go and steal a different vehicle. Sure there are exceptions - but it seems to be that you are into diminishing returns if it survives much longer than that. The longer something survives attack, the more expensive it becomes without offering much more protection. However, if you spend the same money on two or more devices, you get a proportional deterrent value. i.e. two cheap devices with 2 minute survival will give you better protection than one expensive one with 4 minute.

Thus, my plan is to offer a number of 'layers' of security, all low cost, and you add as many as you feel is appropriate to the risk in the area you leave the vehicle.

Well the obvious one that nobody mentioned is 'X-Box' but you might have some contact from the Microsoft legal dept.

I second CwazyRabbit's idea - X-Defend-xxxx, X-Defend-yyyy for your upcoming range.
