mikec
Hi I replaced my bust cv at the weekend now when I took the old cv off the shaft there was a spacer slid on the shaft before the cv, I presume it wasn't part of the cv. Has anyone got a parts book that can confirm the spacer goes there as I've put it together and forgot to put it back, oops! Only think I can think it stops the cv going too far onto the shaft? Cheers mikr
western
see item 4 on page 414 http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/parts_books/110/5_axles_suspension_steering_p398-471.pdf
mikec
Cheers for that pal. Do you know what nsp means in the remarks?
western
nsp = not seperate part IIRC. so it's part of the complete CV joint, BUT on page 414 item 4 the same spacer for 110 with rear drum brakes gives 2 part numbers FTC254 -- http://www.brit-car....php?xProd=86477 or http://www.lrseries....Search+the+shop & RTC5841 -- http://www.brit-car....php?xProd=94418or http://www.lrseries....AFT-SPACER.html hth. do you still have the original spacer, if yes it would be worth refitting it. mikec
Yeah I think I still have it, it was that long between stripping and refitting I'd forgot it! Still can't decide what it does, all I can think is it stops the inner half shaft going to far into the cv cheers mike
western
reckon your right, if the inner shaft went in to the CV to far it would most likely lock up & break.
Off Road Toad
reckon your right, if the inner shaft went in to the CV to far it would most likely lock up & break. That is exactly what it's for, potentially the shaft could move far enough in to the cv joint that on full lock it could jam up and break. landroversforever
When I did my front axle last, I forgot one put the whole side back together before saw it sat on the wing waiting patiently for me to fit it. Taking the CV off the shaft then broke the last clip I had and that happened at 4pm on a saturday, with nowhere to buy the clip! I hope I don't forget it another time

Mine took an absolute beating to get off but the CVs were undamaged.
mikec
Were you using a soft face copper or hide mallet? Mine took an absolute beating to get off but the CVs were undamaged. Nope tried a block of wood to start with then gave up and used just the hammer. Looking at it after the circlip has broke in half, half in the groove and have in the cv
landroversforever
That would be your problem then I guess you've shattered the CV with the hammer?
mikec
Well I cracked the cage yeah. Lesson learned! Got a new cv and clip today but the clip is still not completely round. The original one was round, wish I'd left that on now
landroversforever
Not sure what you are meaning by not round... It needs to sit out of the groove at rest to stop the CV moving. Post up a piccy

Post up a piccy Yeah but the old one was perfectly round but both new ones have a kink in either "end about 5mm from the ends. I think it's just down to the replacement part being not aswell toleranced perhaps than the original one. Unfortunately no pic as its on now, I'll try and get a pic tho

western
it's a 'snap' ring designed to pass through out of the CV inner section & pulling through to the diff. item 5 page 416 here http://www.retroanac...ng_p398-471.pdf New part number http://www.brit-car....php?xProd=94244 pic below is a front inner shaft I busted a few years ago, it still has the bronze collar & snap ring fitted thought it might help,
mikec
I know mate, but the thing is these ones I've got arent perfectly round so it either makes it harder to get off or breaks. If I figure out how to post a pic I'll put it up

mikec
Above is what the original looked like This is the half that came with my aftermarket cvs. You can just tell on the left the way the radius tightens its more obvious when it's a full clip
western
just extracted this from the shaft in my pic above, happy to post it to you. I prised one end of the snap ring to the shaft end with a thin blade then rotated the shaft while holding the raised end to stop it jumping back into the groove.
