Yep, and knowing CH actually knows how to drive a car properly certainly makes me sit and listen to him.

Amos was funny, not sure where Rory knew where to put himself when he started slating SUVs, but the natural nature of it was really great to see -bit like when Clarkson cried at the end of the Britcar 24H race.

CE though, I'm not sure he put that on, or there was something else going on inside his head -that we will never understand....

Anyone watch episode 3? I was really surprised - it was good. They had some great items on it, even a bit of technical detail !

Chris Evans wasn't overpowering, nothing was over the top (except one of the guests), and the rest of the presenters were fine.

I mean it's light entertainment - make no mistake, but I think they are gradually moving to a newer style, which in my opinion seems better.

Yes , I thought it was much better - MLB seemed to be the lead and all the new presenters were on form , it's clear that less is more regarding Chris Evans ;)

As you say decent entertainment with some cool cars , and Sabine going seconds faster than the auto pilot - great stuff

cheers

Yes, much better, mcuh better, there was less of CE.

His Car bit was irritating though, he really is just not natural at it.

Rory and Chris H were very, very good, think they still got cut short rather, the pieces could have been 50% longer and been even better -the previous trio tended to really show the car properly, this felt like just a flavour of it.... not enough..

Shame no fast laps from the Focus or F12 tdf..... and 20 MINUTES of talking to two blokes that really have no place on the show..... I didn;t even know who they were, and CE was just cheesy the whole time, but meh, that's just my opinion :)

Extra gear was good again too.

I watched episode 3 on catch up and just fast-forwarded through the interview bit. I think I lasted 30 seconds – it was just awful, luvvie terrible television, of which there’s plenty of other choices (Norton, Ross et al). At least Clarkson had occasionally sensible conversations with his interviewees – e.g. Gillian Anderson being honest about the Defender’s shortcomings.

Blue touch-paper lit, retreats to safe distance…

No I agree, interview was a painful experience, Clarkson a much better interviewee, and the editing peobably helped too.

Clarkson appears a lot more cerebral than Evans as well... so the conversations would always be more in depth.

We're a few weeks behind in New Zealand so it was interesting watching after having read the comments here. I had to agree with the overall sentiment. The man with the squeaky voice should zip it far more and the American was quite good. One thing no one has mentioned was the guest appearance by Eddie Jordan. Suitably stupid/intelligent in equal doses - I hope we see far more of him.

It's glaringly obvious now how scripted the old show was. Different people are now using the same wording. Clearly, they didn't sack the writers....

The whole show did well to paper over the scripting and staging. The first episode with the middle lock test so staged need to smooth that out. Clarkson may or may not be clever but he is certainly very knowledgable. Watch him on QI and he comes out with a lot of stuff. Largely derived from cars but a lot of things derive from cars. With the episode this week I think they found their feet enough to be viable going forward. I bet the first top gear relaunch wasn't that good in episode 3. When I say I watched that episode it means I watched the cars and totally skipped the interview.....

I thought week 3 was much better than previous weeks - I think they are listening very carefully to feedback and trying to tune the format...

For those of you that like looking at automotive build porn - the build of the Ken Block 'Hoonicorn' mustang is very very impressive:

20 minutes wasted. No idea who they were either.

Tried to make myself watch it last night. Whilst its clear the production and camera work are the same, well polished. The articles and the presenters aren't. It just didnt flow well. Studio sections seemed like a live broadcast between presenters that didnt look comfortable or gel together. Cooking roadtrip seemed a bit pointless and flat. IMHO they are trying to copy the format but without the ingredients that made it work.

Back to waiting for autumn and Amazon.

Last night was much more poor.... as you say road trip was dire, and the guest bit was again, dire, despite the guests.

And talk about dumbed down, there was one point where I think Chris Harris said 'weighs no more than a <insert other car here>', then I waited for the actual figure (being an engineer I wanted to compare to something else), and it never appeared.

Heavy on tyre smoke, engine noises, but nothing actually factual, real shame last night, though they were learning.

CE is still irritating as ever, but took an even more back seat this week, and even stopped shouting during the beginning voiceover.

Still shouted a fair bit of the rest

I thought the Chris Harris bit was pretty good, and closer to the old TG driving tests.

Don't get me wrong, CH was OK, not his finest work ;) Get the feeling the producers have told them to keep away from facts and provide entertainment :(

And yes, CE was still shouting elsewhere, think they fixed the echoing a bit... :) Think he just has an irritating voice.

Caught it last night for the first time. The sound is dire, they need to do something about it because unfortunately CE's vocal range and presenting style are creating the perfect storm in the studio and it's jarring.

Otherwise it wasn't the worst thing but the gel hasn't happened for them yet. It most probably will though once they all get a chance to reflect on the first season.

I liked the Tesla and the Vulcan. Star in a car I think they have missed the point. Lewis Hamilton in a £7k run around was compelling, a 20k mini splashing about not so much. "Wow nice view" comments getting a bit dull. "Best top gear track video ever" get over yourself Chris you still have a lot of work to do on the program. Train felt muddled like they were racing each other but oh there is the train as well. I found myself not really caring who won when it could have been a tourer bike vs car effort. After last week I thought they had enough but dipped down again this week for me.

TBH in my humble opinion, its actually getting there :o I really liked the Jag bit in the new one, and the Rolls and BMW bits was much like the old TG.

However generally I miss the news section and don't really like the new take on the Star in a car. But I honestly think I'm going to get quite used to it. And lets face it, it not like the old TG was always that exciting and entertaining, it did have its moments though, no doubt but I did find quite a lot of the ordinary episodes a bit dreary..
