stanleysteamer
Hi all, had a bump in France, bent rear axle, got it replaced with a second-hand one. 4 wheel computerised tracking said new axle was spot on. But, on return journey, new vibration when towing very big box trailer at 65 mph on M-way. Not had this before, i.e. no noise when towing loaded trailer on way down France, months earlier. Suppose it must be coming from "new" axle, unless accident shocked the rear prop in some way. (In the accident, the other vehicle crashed into my nearside, damaging the two doors slightly, ruining the tyre and bending the axle at about the point where the trailing arm connects. (See pic). Axle was mostly just bent backwards. Any ideas on where to start? No vibration when not under load, by the way. All contributions gratefully received. dave88sw
It would be very difficult to suggest a cause without seeing the car, however, to bend a land rover axle tube would take a HUGE amount of force. Have the trailing arm and watts linkage mounts been checked thoroughly to ensure they haven't bent or cracked? Bushes in the trailing arms renewed with the axle? I suppose the obvious, you must have had a new wheel and tyre, was it balanced?
