FunkyMunky
Hi folks, I have recently come into possession of a 'Superwinch S5000'. It's a bit tatty and needs a new rope and hook, but seems fine apart from that. My question is whether anyone has ever fitted these 'S series' winches to a Defender? Is it even possible, given that the drum is not central? If anyone has one of these fitted, then which bumper was used, as I see the mounting being the only restriction to fitting one? Stu. dag019
Surely that is not powerful enough to use on the font of a defender?
qwakers
a 5000lbs winch would be about as much use in a defender as a chocolate fireguard.
Bowie69
....unless you are using it for something other than self recovery Stu, what's the intended use?
FunkyMunky
So 5000lbs (2.2 ton) not enough? It would be for self-recovery (or recovering others!), so what pull would you suggest?
Bowie69
8-9,000lb is normally recommended for self and other recovery.
FunkyMunky
Okay then...... have to keep my eyes peeled for something more suitable. I might pop this on the trailer then, or flog it to go towards something else. Cheers for the advice!
Mo Murphy
Funkymunky, you need to remember that the weight of your vehicle will be multiplied by the type of surface you're on, how stuck you are and gravity amongst other things. So your 5000lb winch would be perfectly capable of pulling you across smooth flat tarmac but add in the resistance of deep mud and an uphill pull and it will be overwhelmed. honitonhobbit
stalls at about 7.5k lbs - works well with a snatch block. Might just have enough grunt to get you out of trouble Very useful for dragging small logs, boats, annoying children, big dogs
FunkyMunky
Okay guys, thanks for the advice. Going to keep looking for something more suitable but can't afford new. I might get lucky. Stu.
