pinny
im looking to fit a snorkel on my discovery there is many on the market which do you suggest will it improve performance or is this a myth
FridgeFreezer
Won't improve performance (I've yet to hear anyone back up the "ram air effect" that Safari ones claim) but will improve wading. Personally I like the B&Q ones - £20 for a bit of black drainpipe and some elbows & glue and you don't care if it gets smacked by a tree. Dad's been asked several times where he bought his snorkel from, the answer always surprises Whatever you get, make damn sure it's properly sealed, usually by blocking the end with something with the engine running. A friend found out that his shiny new snorkel was worthless when the air filter box let in water and hydrauliced his 200TDi
Andy
myth they dont make any difference to performance. ive got a safari but id prefer to have a mantec cause i think they are neater.
FridgeFreezer
Safaris take a lot more punishment than you'd expect for plastic (see Jules testing his) The 109's snorkel is 2.5" SS exhaust pipe bent up to measure with a Mantec snorkel top which cost £25. Andy
i know they take a lot of punishment, i just prefer the look of the mantec where it runs inside the wing.
waveydave
Id go for Mantec over safari as it is a little tougher altho the safari is better made and looks nicer longer. No performance to speek of but the arguments behind why they would do hold water.I do like the idea of feeding the engine cool air rather than hot air when working hard at low speeds tho. disco tony
southdown sell just the wing moulding for a disco, then get drainpipe and flexible tubing rfom inner wing to airbox. Mine cost £15 in total, I had some flexitubing and blagged the downpipe and fittings.
streaky
I have a Mantec unit which I prefer over the Giant 'Leach lookalike' Safari snorkel. I don't think the two designs of air intake make any difference though. In terms of the EFi V8's I don't think the RAM effect would be creditable...ie...the air filter stops any mass air flow being rammed into the air box. The standard trumpets in the plenum only clear the inner casting by a few mm and as such any forced air/fuel mixture would probably be dormant anyway. Shorten the trumpets and then have them polished would be a step forward. I have 8 giant suction pumps (pistons) doing my air fuel induction. Cooler air is definatly more benificial towards performance than hot air. I'm always amazed at how clean my air filter is when used with the Mantec compared to when I didn't run a snorkel...now it's usually dust and I can re-use the filter a second time. With the old air intake under the hood I would have to throw the gunky old paper filter way and replace it with a new one. As for the deisel arguments.....sort that lot out on yer own...I know nowt about Satans engine.
woff
Mantec all the way. There the best in the game undouptly.
stuntman
I went the B&Q way and would definitly recomend doing your own, I really got a sense of achiement out of doing it, oh and it works, can't say the same about my door seals though! I dropped my 90 on a Safari sorkel then when I broke it up it was the first thing to sell for good money as it was undamaged. any metal one would have simply crushed but a safari returns to its original shape on a disco the fitting is of a vey high standard I'm very happy with mine but there not cheap
Mark
I made mine by buying the top and the wing cover from southdown (seconds, via eBlag) and then using a piece of 2.5" od stainless tube that was bent into vaguely the correct shape when I found it at the scrappy. I cut and shut the tube, welded it up, and then used a couple of bits of Samco silicone hose to joint it to the aircleaner. Essentially, I ended up with a copy of the Southdown one, but for much less money. I wanted one where the tube went along the inside of the wing rather than the safari one on the outside. It seems to work well!
DiscoClax
I like what you've done Mark. Looks good. Could you please post a couple of pics of the plumbing through the engine bay? I'm thinking of doing something similar on my eight-potter...
Mark
Inside the engine bay is very minimal - The snorkel pipe comes throught the wing in a fairly complex curve (hence the need to cut and shut!) and onto a straight piece of silicone hose, onto another straight bit of 2.5" stainless tube, and then goes through the inner wing using a samco silicone reducing elbow (3" - 2.5") and the straight onto the aircleaner... In terms of the engine bay, there is only a couple of inches of pipe, straight onto the aircleaner that sits on top of the inner wing for a 200TDI. I am not sure where the airbox is on a V8.... will do some pictures if ou like, but on a 200 there's not much pipework! cheers Mark
