Ground Anchors....the alternative thread.

So as not to get mixed up in the other thread which occasionally refers to the actual product in question.....

Whats the steel type used for the shovel? Would it be Chrome Moly steel? My mate managed to bend the 6mm thick shovel of his home made effort and we'd like to have something made a wee bit stronger.

I have a genuine Pull Pal and rekon the steel used for the shovel is much harder than ordinary mild steel plate.

Anyone care to add?

Thx.

Hi Streaky.

Here in Denmark almost everybody uses "Hardox 400" 5-6mm thick for the shovel.

Thanks Ole & Mike BT.

The size is 24 inches X 12 inches but I don't think it would be cost effective to send a sheet over Mike. Now I know what grade of steel to look for we might be able to make something that doesn't bend at the tip so easily.

Thanks & best regards.

S.

Hi

Thought I also would add a couple off pics for inspiration, we have now been using this design for 4-5 years in Denmark with great succes, the spade is as far as I know almost twice the X-eng one, we do need that for the danish soil, it holds well in everything but lose gravel, if you want I can get the ruler out during the weekend and get the mesures for you.

Its only drawback is the weight 15 kg.

Kind regards

Ole.

Hardox is slightly the wrong application although a good quality steel.

Domex 700 is a more suitable grade for your application since it has a tensile strength of 700N/mm2 (Newtons per millimetre squared).

SimonR used this information to design his very lightweight spade design since standard mild steel designated S275JR (275N/mm2) is less than half the strength of Domex 700.

Hardox is what it says, for hard wearing applications and not necessarily ductile enough for a spade. The big advantage with Domex 700 is that even welded / folded / laser cut structures still exhibit the same characteristics of ductility and strength as the base material.

Hey Streaky!! How's the desert?

I bent my Pull Pal shovel and had to re-inforce it with angle iron on the back of the blade...haven't used it since doing that mod, but I guess it'll work...

Hey there Nadim...good to hear from you! All's well thanks....the season is upon us again and we've got some serious trips lined up for 08'.

I hadn't thought about that! Reinforcment with angle iron might be a good solution.

The ground anchor in question is a proto type of 200 being made for local sale. The folding sections are all working perfectly and have been galvenised. The first two shovels were for testing purposes and it was one of those that failed under strain from a LWB Patrol.

I'll give your suggestion a try and subject it to the same feild tests.

Take care!

Best regards.

Streaky.

Oh god I should never had asked! Dont worry I left all the teddies where they were though some of them said they had only just got back from a picknick :D

Who is importing the pulll pal?

Cheers Brookers

Don't know who is sole importer of Pull Pal, but Difflock do stock it.

Someone on one of the other topics said they had to weld angle Iron to the back of their spade of a Pull Pal as it broke. So assume they are good for some applications and not others.

Hope this helps.

<Cough>

^%^*% &(^$$(@##!!!

£495 for a ground anchor :o

At that price you might as well buy an old Series 3 and bury that if you need something to winch off!

Or buy 3 X-Anchors and keep the change :)

Could always ask some friends, to club together and have a 3 way split. :o

Yeah is expensive, interesting write up if do search on google from USA:

http://www.4x4wire.com/reviews/pullpal00/

It won't grip in loose shale - really.

Hey check out these trucks:

http://www.jeepinpnw.com/news1.html

Interestingly they use the 9000lb one - which folds down to a handy 4ft size - but can't see where in UK to get this one.

Actually cant see it on Pull Pal website either - odd
