Hi all, I don't know if these are LR spares or

if I need to get them through an autoelectrician -

I need some new contacts for the starter solenoid in a Td5 (MY2000) D110,

The motor has Rover-Denso written on it.

I guess there are 3 bits;

- plunger with a round ring contact

- one L shaped square contact (motor side)

- one L shaped crescent contact (battery side)

any ideas?

If you find anybody selling them ready made please let me know!

We repair loads of them at work, the contacts burn out probably the same as yours have. The blokes at work pull the solenoid to bits and make up new contacts out of offcuts of thick copper earth strap. Originally did it because we needed a vehicle back on the road urgently and had no starter motors in stock, but we now do it on any that fail because its a lot cheaper than a new starter motor :)

There must be a market for somebody to sell solenoid overhaul kits ready-made... Td5 starter motors are cr&p and they are always going wrong!

LR don't even supply the solenoid as a spare, never mind the contacts, you have to buy the whole motor. With older Td5s around somebody is bound to pick up on this opportunity before long but I haven't found them yet...

EPC only shows the complete starter motor for your engine :(

Contacts are cheap Jap stuff - as is the whole of the solenoid according to my auto electrician mate who did mine before Christmas

I'm not sure if the solenoids are rubbish or if maybe the extra few metres

of wire and relay in the 'fender are a little too much voltage drop to pull

the solenoid in with enough force to make a good contact. Even with the

battery terminal fixed and all wiring in top working order I was still seeing

nearly 2 volt drop from battery voltage to the solenoid spade connector.

I'm definitely going to rerun the feed from the battery to the fuse box

in something twice the Cu cross section when I do the dual

battery thing - I'm still seeing ~0.5V under glowplugs.

There appear to be plenty of places to get them over the counter in Oztralia.

which probably goes to show that they are consumables :(

Boggie - what's your import from the USA like?

Repair your Denso starter and SAVE $

Note - I didn't copy any of this from my post on another forum 'cause I only

eva' read LR4x4 so there

Cheers Matt - anybody know of a place in the UK doing these?

Importing from the US is a PITFA (if you think there is a problem with trying to get the average American to point out the UK on a map, try getting them to point out the Falklands...) but with the number we get through it is probably worthwhile if I order 50 sets or something. I'll look in to it :)

OK, have a slight obstacle... identifying which of the (many) cr&p N-D starters the Td5 have....

The Td5 one has the following label on it, new Genuine one we have in stock:

ROVER NAD100240

228000-7220

12V

DENSO 02G10

which doesn't immediately tally with any of the info from the US supplier as to motor type :(

I have emailed the guy to see if he knows from the above info but does anybody else by some miracle have more info on the Td5 starter?

The NAD100240 is the LR part number, correct.

OK, have a slight obstacle... identifying which of the (many) cr&p N-D starters the Td5 have...

after a little googling... I get to;

long link to JN electric that is too confusing to put here

228000-7220

Description: Starter

Supplier: Denso

Type: OSGR

Voltage: 12 Volts

kW: 2 kW

Rotation: CW

Application:

Land Rover Defender Storm

Rover NAD101240

a bit more rooting around on this website gives;

Supplier: Denso

Substitutes:

J&N 248-52041

Supplier: Denso

Voltage: 12/24 volts

8mm Opening for Stud

J&N 248-52017

BUT I can't find the battery contact :ph34r: which looks like this;

66-82758_1_2.jpg

there is a kit of the contact and a few screws and the plastic insulator and o ring under 028099-9271 but I don't want those bits.

I'll get the full part numbers when I go to the Denso specialist, possibly tomorrow.

after a little googling...

.... which was of no use what so ever :(

It appears that Nippon-Denso have a different part number for exactly the same part in each model of starter motor. They actually do this on purpose to confuse the 3rd party manufacturers, AND it appears to have confused their own distributers. I could not find a supplier anywhere that could give me Nippon Denso original parts, even their own distributers

were only offering 3rd party.

Everyone I spoke to said that the ~3,000 N-D part numbers only map to ~7 contact designs and ~10 plungers.

All they want is the dimensions of the contacts (is it 8mm hole, is it square or crescent?) the diameter of the plunger contact and the length of the plunger - the Denso part number was of no interest unless it was a Toyota as they had mapped all the N-D parts to their 3rd party parts. They had not mapped the Land Rover bits into their 3rd party database.

Most people said that it was likely that they had the bits but I would have to bring the old bits in for them to check - not much good for me as the starter is still in the Defender - even less help for the bogmonster :(

The only light at the end of the tunnel is that the contacts/plunger "could be" the same as something more common in Oztralia (or even penguinland), which may be easier to source - I will confirm once I pull out the starter again and ride my bike to the autoelectrical supplier.

I think Td5s are the only LR products to use the ND motor, Tdi engines have an altogether more reliable Bosch unit which never ever ever goes wrong unless you drown it in salt water or something. Having said that Discovery 3 starters do not seem to be the best so maybe they are ND too, I haven't checked.

Unfortunately I can't really take the motor in to match old bits  but I am waiting for a reply from a supplier somebody PM'ed me about so if I get anything back from them I will post it up :)

Just to add to this, Land Rover are now supplying the solenoid by itself as a genuine part, rather than having to buy the whole starter motor.

Part number of the solenoid is NAF500010 which fits any Td5 starter motor.

Quick question - how much of a hassle is it for a "mechanically challenged" but otherwise relatively handy person to exchange the solenoid?

Me, I can manage by hammering the solenoid every now and againg (i.e. everytime I try to start the engine...) but the Mrs is driving me bonkers with her complaining!

Oh, and another thing: I've noticed that the connector from the battery et al (I sort of remember Lucar being mentioned in a text or other) is sort of "sloppy" i.e. it seems that the female bit is a tiiiny bit larger than the male (connector on the starter) - is it advisable to do a bit of creative bending on the metal bits inside the connector, or should the entire (if that's even possible) connector be cut and re-soldered with a new one?

Cheapskate me - I'll getting a visit from the three christmas ghosts anyday now...

gently squeeze the female [not your Mrs] part with pliers to tighten it up.

My dealer told me that part number was for a solenoid repair kit only. Seems a good idea were it not for the fact that sascomponents are half the price and they include starter motor brushes...
