Solid to vented disc brake conversion

Like it says - I remember seeing advertisments somewhere for a conversion kit that spaced out the front calipers so that vented discs could be fitted. Anyone remember who it was?

I want to do exactly that to my 200tdi Defender fronts so I can fit the later vented rotors. Are there any alignment problems or is it a straight dropin job?

Paul :)

The price from Zeus is about 250 quid, which i think is a little pricey.

I priced up buying all new (decent) parts from paddocks & it worked out cheaper with the added the bonus of all new calipers.

Hi Paul,

Its easier to get some S/hand scrap calipers for vented discs and then fit the center spacer in your own calipers ………………. I’ve got a couple of surplus disco callipers here as I was going to do mine………….but you are a little too far away

To recap, the difference is a spacer between the caliper halves ……… its about 6 or 8 mm thick…………………

fairly easy job, the hardset bit is spliting your calipers & inserting the spacer blocks, then rebolting the calipers together again, vented disc are a straight swap, did my 110 years ago but had fully built spaced calipers with the disk so it was just a swap the bits job.

Thanks for the replies guys.

250 quid for a couple of spacers is a bit OTT, or does that include discs as well? I only need the spacers because I can get better quality DBA discs over here much cheaper.

The problem is LR parts are so expensive here that scrap calipers would sell for a few hundred buck alone, and I was only wanting the spacers. I might have to track some down in the UK and get an obliging friend to pull the spacers out and post them over...

I got my caliper spacers from Autopost but I cant seem to find them on their website. IIRC they were around the £60 mark. This included the four shims and longer bolts. I completely overhauled the calipers when fitting the spacers which included fitting new seals between the shims and the calipers. Unfortunately I can't remember where I got these seals from.

Yes thats the kit - spacers, pads, discs & retainers.

You could call them & ask how much spacers alone are. I would be interested in the answer actually.

Paul ...& Hoss,

I popped into Zeus today and they do an 'export kit' which contains, spacers, bolts , O rings, pads, and pad retainers for £80...............currently your caliper contain one O ring between the two halves............... the spacer requires two..... one each side of the spacer............... and the 4 retaining bolts are the width of the spacer longer.......................

Whilst you have it apart, you may as well fit stainless steel pistons.......... then you will have a caliper that can almost be forgotten in terms of maintenance.

Zeus engineering are very close to me....about 15 minutes away.

Although they had some bad press and issues with he timing gear kit conversion, their brake parts are top notch and over the years many, many, brake conversions have been done to London Taxis etc.................... from the LR perspective we only see one side of a company, but Zeus also do a lot of specialist machining for industrial and marine applications .................. I have used them in the past (for specialist microwave focusing unit repairs) and been pleased with the end result.

This seems like a good deal as scrap calipers over here are £25 - £30 each ..................... you are welcome to the spacers that I have but more investigation may be needed as they are from a 94 disco (twin line brakes) and the spacer may only fit the early 90 caliper (which mine is) ................ I will need to check further.......

:)

Interesting, whomever i spoke to at Zeus didnt mention the 'export' kit, only the 250 quid kit.

I emailed Autopost earlier, and they confirmed they have a spacer kit for 62 quid, but it doesnt appear on their website.

'ZAPVENT - 62.28 gbp'

So i've already ordered my EBC vented discs from paddocks, will either get the Zeus or Autopost kit (depending on contents)

EDIT: Ok i have ordered from Autopost - I will post a brief review when i recieve it.

Right- report on conversion:

The autopost kit seemed to be ok: 4x spacers with seals, longer bolts, split pin retainers & springs.

EBC Discs, Mintex pads & proper LR (pin, spring& split pin) retainers from Paddocks.

Except it was not until i had stripped both hubs with refitted new bearings & vented discs, and split the calipers that i noticed that Autopost had provided 4 identical parts instead of 2 pairs. Of course this leaked cos the seals are on the wrong side on 2 of them.

= very unhappy bunny

fitted 2 pieces reversed just so i could get the 110 moving again. but not ideal as they stick out into the pad area & from the end of the caliper.

As to the final verdict on autopost, i will wait to see what king of support/response i get.
