Defender owners taxed out of London

New ‘Low Emission Zone’ will penalise owners of diesel Land Rovers registered between 1973 and 2001

London’s new Low Emission Zone (LEZ) which comes into force in 2008 will affect Land Rover owners.

Owners who drive diesel versions of Series III Land Rovers, Ninety, One Ten and Defenders and registered between 1973 and 2001 will have to pay £100 per day for the privilege of driving in London.

And this isn’t the centre of London, this is all of London, including the suburbs. Basically, if you head inwards from the M25 and you drive one of the above vehicles, you will have to pay.

Although the LEZ comes into force next year, Land Rovers won’t fall within the rules until October 2010, when your vehicle will either have to meet the emissions standard, or you’ll pay the charge.

The good news is that you can modify your Land Rover to meet the standard by fitting pollution abatement equipment.

The bad news is that it will cost you around £2200 + vat.

The equipment manufacturers, who haven’t even designed the Land Rover versions yet, don’t think that there will be that much demand for the filters from Land Rover owners. ‘Why fit something costing £2500 to a vehicle worth not much more?’ said one.

And, of course, the cost of the filter isn’t the only issue. Your insurance will probably go up too. If you’ve an old diesel Series III worth, say £1000, you’ll be trebling its value – or at least the amount it is worth to you.

The trouble is that the street value of the Land Rover won’t increase with the amount spent on the filter. If the vehicle is stolen or written off, you are unlikely to get back the money you have paid on the filter, let alone the value of the Land Rover.

At LRO HQ, we reckon that there will be a new trend away from fitting Tdi lumps to older Land Rovers and the clocks will be turned back 20 years, to when fitting a V8 engine was the way to get more performance for your Land Rover. What do you think?

At a glance

What is it? The London Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

Who will it affect? Owners of diesel Series III and diesel Defenders and Ninety/One Ten/ 127 registered between 1973 and 2001.

When will it affect Land Rovers? October 2010

How much will the daily charge be to drive one in London? £100

Can you modify your vehicle to get round the charge? Yes, but it will cost you about £2500

Even if you only drive your Defender once a month to trials it will still cost you £1200 a year

As I once said on a previous thread, if the UK government was REALLY concerned about pollution they would invest massivley in bio-fuel technology and remove ALL duty from existing fuel such as LPG to make it absoltutely irrisistable to consumers.

In my opinion, placing a tax on something is what happens when a government cannot think of a proper solution - its simply a back-stop, an admission that it doesn't know the correct answer is and a means of generating more revenue until it can. Its a very sad thing to say but I can never imagine wanting to live in the UK again.

Exactly - the government is using the fear of global warming to raise tax. All this rubbish about switching TVs off standby when they continue to floodlight public buildings. Why don't they promote the use of off-peak electricity, they could roll a programme out in days not years, but they'd lose a lot of VAT.

Not to mention the carbon trading scheme - money in the pockets of pen pushers.

As for this diesel thing in London, would it apply to vehicles running on veggie oil? If not it would be a lot cheaper to convert to WVO/SVO and how about some government grants?

According to the Tfl website, the new charge affects any "heavy duty" vehicle - it's basically saying that they will have to be Euro III emissions compliant.

I followed the link and entered by own vehicle details (1989 Tdi 110) and was told that I was exempt from the charge anyway....which seems to contradict what the LRO story says. Journalistic licence or is the Tfl website wrong then?

Another bit of True OTT ill thought out and overly PC 'Ken Madness'

The good news for me is yet another, even better reason to stay away from London, which I absolutely hate with a passion and groan and moan whenever sent there for business - which thankfully is now less and less

The real worrying thing about this is that these stupid ill thought out ideas is that they could spread to other urban areas of the UK.

K.L. really is 24 carat ******.....

Wow, that's just amazing, never mind the land rovers, how many older transit vans, scaffold lorries, delivery trucks are used to run small business in London. Unbelievable, I hate London, but you can guarantee this will start to spread out to other counties and towns because local councils and government are to cowardly to actually take a sensible view on curbing emmisions.

I swear for the last 10 years every sentence to come out of UK government begins with ban, fine, tax, charge or fee.... oh and terror (but that's a whole other story!!!).

Just read the leaflet http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/LEZ...es-affected.pdf, anyone want to buy a 90?

Bring on 10/2010 :( . I'll have to get meself a TD5 in a couple of years..

I look forward to the day I can sell my humble house in the smoke for some unfeasably large amount and live in palacial splendour on the outer hebrides. I'm sure the climate there will be tropical in a few years what with global warming being what it is, then again maybe the rest of london will have the same idea :D

It states over 1.205 tonnes and diesel engined. Rather strange.

So a 4.6 V8 is fine  because they only care about particulates.

I suppose we need to see this for what it is. Just another stealth tax.

And a very sneaky one as most of these vehicles will belong to businesses so Joe Public thinks it won't effect him but the businesses will pass the costs onto their customers, ultimately Joe Public.

And if it costs £2500 to convert a vehicle there's a nice chunk of VAT in that.

From October 2010... No it won't. (possibly)

Edited to add. Legislation says diesel engined vehicles over 1.205t(Large vans). It does not specify PLG, Light goods or whatever tax class yet......

A transit van/escort van and a disco or defender of this age will be tax class PLG. How will they tell which to include?

erm I don't suppose having an electric winch fitted classes it as a hybrid drive does it? theoretically with patience, trees and enough batteries you can move the car under just electrical power?:rolleyes:

That gives me the idea of hitching a tow behind one of Sheffield's trams.

Just checked my TD5 90 registered 9/11/2001 - From 4/10/2010 -

Non-compliant - Based on the information you have entered and information held by Transport for London (TfL), the vehicle is classified as not meeting the emission standards for the Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

While the vehicle is non-compliant, when it is used in the Zone the daily charge must be paid otherwise you will be liable for a penalty charge.

For information on how to comply with the LEZ click hereEmissions classification for these dates is based on the Vehicle Type and the age of the vehicle

That will be £100 per day then or £200 if you stay past midnight (or just overnight). It is clear that this is a money making exercise, because a parked Landy with the engine off doesn't pollute!
