Right then. Time to get the ball rolling. Here is my starting point. I have 12 months to get as far as possible.

Ingredients:

The most important ingredient first:

post-139-1198162565_thumb.jpg

Unimog U900 (406) axles. These boat anchors are currently being torn down to turn the centre sections into a wood burning stove (I only want the outers).

post-139-1198162114_thumb.jpg

Gearboxes. An NV4500 5 spd manual coupled to a heavy duty output / passenger drop Atlas with e-brake.

post-139-1198162109_thumb.jpg

This will be held together with some tube, blu-tac, wood screws and the contents of a few pigeons.

Plan:

I have a bellhousing to suit an LSx engine, so I'll be saving my pennies to ship one over. If I feel the need for a louder 'go' pedal, I may or may not be adding a 1.21 gigawatt flux capacitor:

post-139-1198162730_thumb.jpg

Wheelbase will be sub-100.

Configuration is currently under hot debate, but I'm seriously considering independent susp with portal boxes. I'm building this thing (or not...) purely for fun, so I'm game for a bit of experimentation. B) If not, it will be hybrid axles.

If I can find something on a Land Rover product that isn't going to break, I'll try to incorporate it to justify my presence on a LR forum!

Now, it's not Tuesday yet, so save it.

Al

PAH! - That eeez nothing you Eenglish goat-herder.

Nice new cylinder head and cam bearings fitted and line-bored today by none other than Turner Engineering themselves, in the flesh while I loitered about in the car park like a true Pikey. I even got a guided tour of the factory by the man himself while Frida mugged me was very helpful in lightening my wallet :P

Drool over these - peasant!

Well, as a true vapour builder I have a distinct lack of shiny bits but a large confluence of rusty bits B)

When I first got 'George' he was a true scrapheap rescue looking like this:

georgestart.jpg

After a Christmas of hard work he looks like this (Deano not included):

nochassis.jpg

The brief is a truck that will suit a 5ft 11" girly driver with a shoulder injury, so looking like a series is a must but with some small...er.. alterations to ensure comfortable driving. I want to do 'something stupid' and with a competitive spirit to rival Rich (D-Lander) it'll have to be a capable truck as well as a sparkly party mobile for events like Shire LRC parties and L2B.

I've spent the past year collecting various panels for nothing more than labour and cookies due to every penny being spent on the big yellow money sponge (otherwise known as a the Camel 110) in preparation for our 5 month trip around Canada and the USA. But now I'm back, the Camel isn't and I have no excuse for not buying shiny bits for George and finally putting some money into the project - and I can't wait :)

Vital ingredients are scattered around the house at the moment, with the next big purchase being axles and a new chassis.

Other ingredients include these:

If you can't have a laugh whats the point? B)

I've never undertaken anything like this before and have alot to learn, including how to weld and wtf wiring is all about :ph34r: But, hey, I'm a fast learner and enthusiastic enough hopefully to get through it. Aim: Something resembling a truck by Christmas 2008.

Help. ;)

So are we going for monthly updates? ;) C'mon you lot, lets see how many cold hours you've been spending in the garage this January. 1/12th of the time gone!

After having a large pile of rusty bits, I brought some oily bits:

web_IMG_0328.jpg

Which have gone from that, to this:

IMG_1802.jpg

With a little bit of this:

IMG_1795.jpg

Still alot more work to do, the Welding Stig reckoned 8 hours on each, so I planned a good week! B) After a few hours of procrastination I was finally brave enough to take an angle grinder to my new axles, but even after a bit of practise (and some bravery) I'm getting alot better. Plan is to have some nice clean axles by the end of next weekend.

Bulkhead has been rubbed down and looks pretty good, some new footwells required and a few small holes to fill, but nothing to serious. That will be sorted after the axles are finished.

Chassis hopefully on order in the next couple of weeks (payday on the 15th) which will enable me to line a few things up and get the spring mounts in the correct place for serious heavy duty welding B) A little bit of research required to decide if there is a better option for the rear of my 88".

Some interesting things maybe occuring on the engine front, but maths and research required first. At the moment evil 'give me torque/horsepower' head is ruling 'be sensible' head :lol:

Big yellow money sponge is living up to his name though...

IMG_1801.jpg

I have yet to see how much of a dent this will have on 'George Fund' ... he's due to be used on a Wales weekend at Easter and due in the Italian Alps in August... :(

Seriously? Are you all still completely Vapour? Well at least the forum fund will be looking better at the end of 2008 ;)

Forgot to say, I had my first attempt at welding too, learning lots but coming up with more ideas so still a fair bit of vapour hanging around in Southampton

Hi Jen, yes I'm still 'in' personally. Though I'm slightly disturbed that you're turning the vapour thread into a build thread - TOO MUCH PROGRESS!!!:P

I won't be making any progress at all until I get back to the UK in April / May, so I'll have nothing to update until then. Watching yours with interest though!

Come on the others - whatcha up to?

Al.

Well my engine is just about finished. I need a lift pump, decide whether or not to buy a new turbo or get the old one rebuilt (there's only £100 in it),a clutch, PAS pump, starter (I have an old one, but I'll replace it), and alternator (I have an old one, but I'll replace that too).

Looking Good Les, and good progress too everyone else.

This is my first post for the Vapour Build! :D

I now have a completely refurbed rear axle and will be finishing off the front axle this week (swivels to go on) so hope to have some pics by the end of this week (need to get the Mr Sheen out first :P ).

Next steps are going to be getting the bulkhead galved slow time and 200TDi rebuilt (I now have Les's work of art to aspire to).

Cheers

G

Well there goes my Vapour Cherry!

post-1366-1203673641_thumb.jpg

What can't be seen from the picture is the amount of work that has gone into refurbing these prestine beauties :P .

The axles were completly stripped, the rear axle was obtained from a RRC but needed new shock mounts, drag links and bump stops welded on (wouldn't have been so bad if the axle had been cheap but thats price of experience I suppose) the axle casings once welded were sent away for proper shot blasting and primer.

I shotblasted by hand everything else (except for the new disks) inside and out then two coats of galvafroid and a couple of coats of hammerite.

I wish I had taken pictures of the swivel housings before refitting as they were spotless inside and out (proper land rover porn) :moglite: .

I have fitted new wheel bearings, swivels, and seals throughout and even fitted rubber gaitors on the swivels.

Now that these are done my attention is going to the 200TDi rebuild, judging by my rate of progress should be ready for Spring next year!! :D

Hope this now puts me officially on the Vapour Builders List!

Will need to work out realistic achievement milestones and payment penalties for missing them as well.

Cheers

G
