Hi guys,

As the title say's, my disco td5 failed its mot on the smoke level

Readings were 4.17 (limit 3)

Last year it only just passed with redex and a heavy right foot on the way for the test

2 years ago the reading was just 1.61

Does anyone have any ideas whats happened and how to fix it (remove egr, change exhaust) ?

Oh, it has been chipped and has K&N filter fitted but mot reading was 1.61

Any advice would be great ;)

Don't have any advice other than: Don't listen to discojmz's advice.

I ran a JE Engineering-remapped Td5 with an ITG filter through three MoT tests (to 100,000 miles) and had no problems whatsoever. Having the remap removed will not guarantee you will pass.

My MoT tester - who does a lot of Land Rovers, this being Lincolnshire - said that my vehicle's emissions were far better than many standard Td5s he had failed and that you can't tell from the MoT emissions test whether a vehicle has been remapped.

As for getting yours passed - sorry, can't offer any advice on that.

so because yours is remapped, and his is chipped, yours has good emissions, and his doesnt, his chip is not to blame... the chip couldnt have gone wrong or be causing some kind of conflict.

ive seen enough ecu chips play up hell in my time to suspect it. I also know that you try the free things first, then the simple things, and then the complex ones. if removing the chip makes no odds, fine, put it back. the K&N is doing no favours at all regardless.

like i said, he says chipped, not remapped. chips and piggybacks can often be simply unplugged. im only going on what he has said.

I do hope though, for the sake of your wallet that its not any duff injectors matey. good luck with it! im sure some grownups like Bogmonster, Jim Attrill etc will be along soon enough to tell you exactly what the problem is.

might be worth sending a PM to 'Porny' he's our resident TD5 wizard!

oh and welcome to the forum :)

Two days ago we had a visit from an Injection specialist who showed us how they recondition TD5 injectors. This had to happen - sooner or later someone would find out how to do it. In the past years we have changed a total of three injectors for good second hand ones. Now we can get them reconditioned at a very low price. He said most can be fixed for R700 or so, which is about £45. Apparently there is a nozzle which wears out - electrical problems are rare.

So it seems you could have all 5 injectors reconditioned for less than the price of one new one.

There must be someone in the UK who does this?

(For once I will not rant and rave about KanNot™ filters - I think I have worn that subject out by now :) )

Just a thought - I have noticed that my water injection system on the 300tdi stops the smoke instantly when it switches in. And I believe that direct water injection is being investigated by some of the big manufacturers to reduce emissions. I was actually hoping for a big decrease in fuel consumption, and it has helped a wee bit on that front.

My injector has been tweaked by myself (see the tech archive for details) and the engine does smoke quite a bit on acceleration. It still does, until it reaches .3 bar and the wi comes on.
