defender dinky
hi all, having trouble with oil seals on my hubs, this will be the third time in a year.having used britpart seals before, Would this be the right ones to get; i have a defender 90 1987. follow the link below: click here
Retroanaconda
That will work in that it should fit and seal, being a decent make. I've always used RTC3511 for hub seals though. The dual-lipped type. They seem to handle oil in the hubs better than the single-lipped ones. Make sure the stub axle land is reasonably smooth, or your seals won't last long at all. And pre-grease both the stub axle land and the seal lips themselves before fitting.
western
Better to use RTC3511 go for the genuine item not pattern part.

Hybrid_From_Hell
"Britpart" and "3rd time" Do a search on Britpart Otherwise I have few pulled out knackered seals you can have which will last longer Nige
Retroanaconda
Paddocks do OEM ones: http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DEFENDER/Axle/Rear_hub_seal_OEM_-_90in_to_axle_22S08283B.html Mine came in proper Corteco boxes. Most of the big suppliers will be able to source you them, make sure you get OEM though and not pattern parts. Or pay up a tenner each at the main dealer. Mo Murphy
Yup Corteco are OEM manufacturers, so you'll get the right part a a lower price than genuine. Funny that Paddocks do them now, perhaps even they have seen the light with Britpart, although I doubt it Mo
defender dinky
well corteco it is then, oem cheer's mo
Retroanaconda
To add a spanner in the mix, the last time I ordered the same bits from Paddocks, I got Britpart bagged seals, labelled up as OEM. They were in fact proper Corteco seals, just re-bagged. And this time they're Corteco boxed. Odd that it varies from order to order.
Mo Murphy
The last ones that I got, James, were boxed. Lovely little boxes, makes you feel like you're getting your moneys worth, so much better than a plastic bag Mo

Aragorn
Bloody typical i go and order four genuine FTC4785's thinking they'll do the job nicely, then stumble accross this thread
Maverik
I think maybe yeah it could be the seals, but as Retro said the sealing face is also important. I picked up 2 very nice stub axles from Paddocks for 30 squid each I think they where branded "freemans", was quite happy with the quality, seals will seal lovely to the silky smooth finish. Hybrid_From_Hell
Early RR used Oil in Hubs, pre LR going to Grease (Customers didn't like oil drips on their drives apparently ) So, if you convert back to oil hubs (FAR Superior IMVHO) then you need RTC3511 and a genuine or decent quality one, use a poor pattern one and "Total Loss Oil system" will mean something to you Also the RTC3511s have seals in different places, so high chance the stub will be as new there, just clean stub up with wire wheel brush to remove the gunge on it Nige
defender dinky
hi all before i order this oem hub seal item, have alook at the link in my first post? corteco on packaging, but on read up it says cortico, is this just a printing error, i have sent message to supplier but can't get an answere, cheer's dd
western
probably a spelling mistake while it was being typed, I'd go with whats on the packet.
tweetyduck
DLS are pretty good. All their stuff I've ordered has been as described. So if the add says corteco they will be.
