BLACK CAB
Can any body confirm if it is possible to replace the front output shaft bearing in a LT230 Transfer Box, without having to first remove the box from the vehicle? Assuming it is possible is the procedure similar to the rear bearing and seal replacement shown in the Tech Archive? Would any one also have the bearing part number? simonb
IIRC someone asked this not so long ago, and i think it can be done in situ. I'm sure Les or Western will be along soon with a clicky link..

pritch1
hi asked this a few months back apparently you can do it in situe but its a PITA if i rember right . I was told by, i think white 90 that there is supposed to be some movement in the bearing though a few mm each way so i just changed my seal as it was leaking and its been fine ever since. Les Henson
I've never done the front bearing, so can't help you in this I'm afraid. There is supposed to be a small amount of play in the front bearing though. Rotation of the bearing should still feel smooth, and if it doesn't - then you will need to replace it. Les. mwncidur
Yep it is possible to do in situ. I shall take a photo of the tool a mate of mine has made to do it.
BLACK CAB
Thanks for all the replies. I'll check to see how much lateral movement there is and if i can detect any roughness in the rollers.
jjojjas
just so your aware, I noticed this on my 110 a few weeks after I bought it when doing a major service / inspection. Two years and 20+k later its still exactly the same and I check it ever 3k when I service it. Jas
Anglo-Frenchman
I've just taken the t/box out to renew the mainshaft seal and not too big a job. Bought a small hydraulic platform lift for 79 euros made the whole thing much simpler.
andyb
Yes it is possible to do this without removing the transfer box. I just have on my Discovery. Once you have removed front prop, there is a big nut (30mm socket) to remove. I used an air impact gun. Remove the washer and the front flange. There is a oil seal to remove and then a big circlip. Once all this is remove pull on the shaft and the whole thing will come out with the bearing. Don't panic you are just pulling the shaft out of the side of the centre diff. The bearing will need 'drifting' off the shaft and the new one pressing on. I wish I'd take a few pictures now but it's not all that difficult.
