Paddy
I need some early defender front door hinges, with lots of suppliers and with price ranges from genuine down to Britpart, does anyone have any recommendations? Obviously Genuine is best, but hoping for a good substitute at a reasonable price.
oneandtwo
Best bet would be a set of new "take off" td5 type genuine hinges - they have more rounded corners than the old style and can usually be picked up for £30 a set of four.
Paddy
I believe these are slightly ‘bigger body’ than the original old style and the top hinge will foul the horizontal capping on the military two piece door of my 91 defender. I’m not in a position to ‘try and return’ so I need to buy right. I fear it will have to be the originals and their cost.
mat2495
you are right, they do foul the door capping, I worked around this by using two of the plastic spacers on both sides of the upper hinge. This just allowed the hinge to clear the capping, without affecting how the door fitted the gap. for what its worth the td5 type have been a great improvement, no rusty water running out of them yet, unlike all of the early type I have ever fitted
Paddy
Thanks for that, it’s reassuring when someone else has done a successful mod. I’ll go the same route.
mat2495
no problem, i used the normal door spacers, just doubled up, although i'm sure some could easily be made up out of slightly thicker plastic if you wanted
Ex Member
Paddock Spares sell a zinc plated version that does not cost a lot. This seems like the best option to me.
