  1. Not electrical, but after a clunk they stopped about two inches lower than normal...

Wiper motor still making same noise.

Both arms are still linked (ie move one and the other moves) but are not free to move by hand.

Me thinks something has come adrift in motor/drive department.......

Anyone any experience of the later (post 2002) models which seem to be different to earlier versions.

  2. Could be either the IRD or the viscous unit - what happens if you jack up a front wheel and turn it, does the IRD output turn?

I have to get it in and have a look at it. He works on shift so might be a couple of days...

    thanks for the reply though.

  3. A mate of mine has just bought a 1.8 Freelander, (which is better as he actually as he went tp get a jeep).

Apparently he did not look underneath and it seems he bought a 2wd version (ie seller had removed rear prop)

He went and bought a prop a few days ago from an nice chap in essex who was breaking his freelander, and when it went on (the chap let him do it there) it did not work properly.

He was getting muddled up as to the exact nature of the problem, but Im assuming its the bearing on the output of the IRD (or is this the viscous unit on the freelander)..

What is the most likely causes and should he leave it as it is (noting previous comments in this thread) or get a recon/exch or second hand unit.

    Thanks

    NIc

  4. A mate at work has a Td5 Disco, and he cannot open rear door, inspection by me revealed the central locking was not unlocking the rear door (all the rest OK).

If you unlock the door from the inside, then close the door, and lock the car again the central locking makes the solenoid lock go down.

I dont think its a door spring issue (dont know if TD5's have this yet).

I have suggested he brings it to me and I test the solenoid, by anyone else had this problem?

  5. You could try getting one from here http://www.partsgateway.co.uk, you tell then what you want (although they assume you have a vehicle and threfore ask for a reg number but you can get around this).

You could get the Td5 and even see it running before its removed or you can get warranty..

Ive used http://www.a1landroverbreakers.co.uk/ (they are one of the breakers that PartsGateway use and they were fab, speedy delivery and warranty!

  6. I have got castor correction arms fitted and I have got cranked trailing arms. I put them on about a year ago when I done the lift, I also replaced the props for wide angle ones. It is a 1998 300tdi 90 and done about 140,000. I had thought about buying a set of cheap standard shocks to see if that might solve the problem before spending silly money on a set of OME shocks only to find it is somthing else.

Badger had a set of 90 springs and dampers he was trying to flog a while ago, they were LR factory OE removed from his 90 which had covered only 9k miles or so when he 'blinged' it and went all off roady !

  7. In theory, you should get a VDRS (Vehicle Defect Rectification...) which gives you 14 days to fix it, if the officer thinks the vehicle is dangerous and should not be driven you run the rist of having it removed from the road..

I would personally favour the former, but thats my opinion..

  8. I dont see that you have had the radius / trailing arms corrected for the lift... (its been a long day and Ive read the post a few tines).

Have you replaced them with corrected ones ? If not your front axle castor angle is not properly set, and IMHO it will affect the handling.

You dont have to get shiney new ones, Gwyn Lewis used to sell used oned that had been re-aligned (bent).

    What is the mileage?

Either way, put new bushes & bolts in when you get arms replaced.

Your info on the dampers/shocks would seem to suggest the front ones are in need of replacement

  9. What Nic asked is whether BOTH the left and right footwells of the RHD Defender are the same as the left and right footwell of a LHD defender, and the answer to that is 'yes'

The tunnel is in the same place in a LHD Defender and an RHD Defender.

Nic's in need of this information as he needs to cut templates for his new clientele on the continent, where 99% of Defenders are LHD.

Thanks for the clarification, and I now need a willing victim (er volunteer) who lives in the UK, has an Lt77 or R380 gearbox LHD and wants a set of mats at half price !

    Any takers ?

  10. I think the differences (if any) will be in the region of the tunnel, however the diff lock / high low lever is in the same place so its possible they are the same and not even mirror images of RHD.

I had not intended to use this as an advert, but if you search ebay for nic.wood in the community area you can find me.

  11. For those of you who dont know me, I make custom rubber mats for all types of Landies.

Im getting enquires from EU and futher, but I dont yet make mats for LHD vehicles.

In terms of Defenders (and possibly series) are the floor panels mirror images of each other or are they the same ?

Not having any LHD vehicles to check, I would be grateful for any ideas...

  12. I added a NAS step purchased from Mr Miserableoldgit and its great, I also have kids bikes on the back from time to time, so a very heavily modified Witter towbar affair has been put on as well (OK sold a car and forgot to take the bracket off so had to make one).

The picture shows a NAS step (great for getting in and out of the back) with two fixed drop plates and an ally extenstion to push the 50mm ball that bit further back.

Has been checked by local trailer hire fitting company and regularly tows full weight (double axle trailer with another landy on the back) no probs..

I found that without the drop plates the front axle of the trailer was off the ground when unoaded. I chose to have two to beef things up.

  13. I didnt want to say anything but I bought a set of seat heaters to go in a customer car along with refurb.

Bought in Sept, faulty switch in April, after countless emails saying they would replace it, and nothing, called manufacturer on Tuesday, new one in place by thursday and thats from germany.

great at what they do, but not so good at the fluffy bits around the edges (IMHO of course)
