  1. I am looking for any L Series Freelander owners anywhere near me (Ruislip, M25 J16 / M40 area) who can help me test that my companies diagnostic tool really does work on these vehicles. We know that it works on the Rover 600 diesel which appears to have a very similar ECU but getting it confirmed would be useful. In exchange I can offer access to my factory Landrover Testbook T4 tool or other diagnostic favours as you need them. Alternatively if anyone has a spare L series ECU lying around that they could lend me briefly that would be really appreciated. thanks, Philip
  2. I fitted Bilsteins on my car (not a Landrover), and even though they were supposed to be the "standard" shock and not a performance model, I hated them at first. It made the suspension feel almost solid. A couple of year on with 30,000 miles more on the clock they are much better though. Unfortunately a stiffer spring needs a stiffer shock absorber to keep the spring under control, so fitting a stiffer spring can be a bit of a double hit to ride quality.
  3. All of the Freelander 1s except for the TD4 have a sealed clutch hydraulic system. The TD4 does have a bleed screw and you can top up the (tiny) reservoir and bleed them. From the experience of my wife's one this will improve things for a few days and then the biting point will go down again. The master cylinder is very easy to change on these (it is a 20 minute job) but the slave cylinder is a gearbox off job. On wife's one we had to change both and so I fitted a metal slave cylinder made by Tazu in Poland, and a new clutch at the same time. In the end the old clutch was pretty much worn out anyway so no great loss. Maybe you will be luckier.
  4. You need a diagnostic tool which can read the error codes. The normal procedure is that you would see what codes are there, then reset them, and then see what code(s) comes back. My company make one which does the Teves Mk25 as found on my wife's year 2002 Freelander, but I can't say for sure whether it will work on yours. Freelander 1s can have Wabco, Teves Mk20 or Teves Mk25 and the change over was about 2001. If you happen to be near me North or West of London M25 area I would be happy to have a look as it would help development of the tool. Otherwise you will need to find a mechanic with a good diagnostic tool near you who can/will read the codes.
  5. Clutch hydraulic problems are common on these. If one of the cylinders has gone the pedal will still return to the normal position but the system will have air in it and so it won't release the clutch properly when pressed. The first thing to try is to bleed the system. The TD4 is different to the others because it is not a completely sealed system and so you can bleed it. Most likely this will restore a good clutch for a while (it worked for a few days on ours) but then the biting point will get lower and lower until you can't release the clutch properly again. After that the master cylinder is easy to change. If that doesn't work the slave cylinder is an expensive gearbox off problem to fix. On ours we had to change the slave cylinder so I fitted a metal one made by Tazu and also fitted a new clutch at the same time. It turned out to be no great loss because the clutch plate had hardly any meat left on it anyway.
  6. I recently added some basic TD5 functionality to our scanner, however it does not yet do injector coding nor immo/alarm coding. I think that in order add this kind of functionality I would need access to a TD5 owned by someone prepared to let me play with it a bit. If anyone near me (i.e. Ruislip near M25 J16) needs this kind of thing doing I can help out (for free) and at the same time improve the scanner.
  7. According to this thread on another forum https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/diagnostic-kit.290131/ the i930 doesn't work on the TD5 In fact looking at the item description from your link to ebay it says Defender (Puma TDCi)) 2007 Onwards Discovery (Excluding D2 Td5) 2002 - 2013 which would appear to agree with the landyzone post.
  8. Today I had this successfully working on a petrol Freelander with MEMS1.9. It was an X reg. Also I had it working on a TD4 year 2003 model. You can read what the owner of the TD4 said about it here http://www.mgfregister.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15475&start=140 I also had a fantastic report from an owner of an MG ZR with the L series diesel. He had tried multiple professional tools to try and read his error codes and mine was the first to actually work, but of course that doesn't guarantee that it will work on a Freelander L series. I would really like to test this on a Freelander 1 with the L series diesel. Can anyone let me have a go? And if you have a petrol one or a TD4 please go ahead and buy one to fund my Kickstarter project
  9. I have implemented a product which does (amongst other things) the EDC15M diagnostics protocol as used on Rover 25/45 diesel, and the EDC15C4 protocol as used on the Rover 75 diesel and the MEMS1.9 as used on MGF and others. I am wondering if Landrover used the same protocols as Rover or whether they changed them? If anyone lives near me (I live in Ruislip, west London and work in Hertfordshire) and would like to try it out I would love to hear from you. I note in the rules it says "Participants may not use the Forums to post or transmit advertisements or commercial solicitations of any kind" which is why I have said not too much about the product. Hopefully I haven't gone over the line... Thanks, Philip
