  1. Interestingly on this 35 - this isnā€™t the 3 cylinder Perkins engine - itā€™s the earlier 4 cylinder one, which has a reputation for poor starting.

This one seems to start well, well it smokes a lot to start with - but it clears and it is 1958. Itā€™s also had the injector pump rebuilt ..Ā

but what Iā€™ve read is that the glow plugs on these were wired through a big resistor, possibly to protect the switch?, and then they were all wired in series .. so if one failed none of the subsequent ones would get power.Ā

So the modern remedy seems to be that there are lots of folk saying theyā€™ve fitted Land Rover ones, from Turners, in parallel and with a relay.Ā

Nice. Underslung exhaust. Is it a narrow vineyard model?

Normal width one ā€¦ not sure why it had the low exhaust - might help me fit it in the garage though

Very nice! I reckon one of those would fit in the garage nicely if I could get it past the OH without her noticing.

    I got the OHā€™s blessing - though not immediately!Ā

Where to put it is a question I need to answer - I can possibly make space in my garage for it. If not it might be under a cover outside.

Lovely! Got any particular implements planned to go with it?Ā

I think Iā€™ll start with a flail mower, Iā€™d like a haybob, and a small square baler eventually. Not sure how I find an old baler thatā€™s cheap but not worn out though - Iā€™ve no idea how they work.

I did plan on buying a scruffier tractor that I could leave up at the field ā€¦ this is a bit nice to just leave parked in the middle of nowhere.

Longer term I am going to look at getting planning for a small 2 bay barn, something a bit more secure, or if it will fit in the garage at home perhaps even a field shelter to keep the mower out the weather.

    Itā€™s very exciting !Ā

Iā€™ve paid a deposit and the chap gave me the V5 to take, he said he works on trust. šŸ˜Š

  3. I have a friend who used to buy for the utility companies - none of them (I.e the workers)Ā wanted to get rid of their Defenders - even though the commercial people were telling them there were better, cheaper vehicles - with better warrantiesā€¦ and they kept them for years and years.

I think the 3 year thing is not just because of finance and warranty - itā€™s because the vehicles do become worn out and arenā€™t that repairable.

The Grenadier could get back into that - if itā€™s reliable, configurable, has the warranty - and is long lived then the total cost of ownership alone might justify it - putting aside the other definitions of value that might work in its favour.Ā

    Good luck to ā€˜em I say šŸ˜Š

  4. This is quite a strange conversation !

Iā€™m 52, debt free, canā€™t afford a Ferrari - but then Iā€™ve worked 32 hours over 4 days for the last 20 years. I value the time more.

Which is actually the calculation I did when I decided I coveted a Grenadier - I do really like them, in fact I canā€™t think of any other new car Iā€™d buy but that oneā€¦. Ā

but I want the money to go into retiring early - and I still love my Land Rovers.

  5. The steering seems to be another individual thing.Ā

On an Individual level Iā€™ve never driven anything where I truly liked everything about it - itā€™s just the balance of what you love to what you donā€™t that determines if itā€™s right for you (or if you even let yourself notice the problems!).

I guess how many people, of the right demographic, that leaves who would buy one is what determines if itā€™s a success or not at the market level.Ā

That weā€™ve yet to see for the Grenadier, though I am seeing a good few of them about.Ā

The balancing machine knows where the weights are going, so gives different amounts for weights on the inside and outside rim.

Iā€™m saying that because Iā€™ve seen someone put loads of weight on and a more experienced operator change the location to the centre of the wheel and get a better balance with less weights - I've also seen other operators struggle with what itā€™s telling them. Ā Mud tyres and the wheel type may be the source of that ā€¦. But it eroded my confidence in them balancing them well.Ā

  7. I donā€™t balance mine any more.

I had them done ages ago - and they put masses of weight on. Some fell off - so I took the lot of and there was no change in how it drove.Ā

So since then I just donā€™t bother.

I honestly donā€™t think they really know how to do it. Not just that they tend to balance them from the wheel centre rather than the stud holes .. but how they want to default to putting the weights on the outside of the rim for ease - when thatā€™s not necessarily the best spot to balance it.Ā

I honestly wouldnā€™t bother - get the spot lined up with the valve and then thatā€™s it.Ā
