  1. I'd give David Bowyer a ring if I were you because when i enquired about a plasma rope for an X9 he told me "X9's get hot and then plasma rope can melt" , I spoke to Gwyn Lewis as well and he said the same , so I went for a new steel rope off Gwyn as he's on my doorstep.

I didn't ask why they get hot but I'd imagine it's something to do with the motor / brake design .maybe a grown up will be give you a better explanation .

Also there is somebody on here called tiger ( has some stuff in the for sale section) who's in aberdyfi might be worh pm ing him , he might know where to find one locally

  3. If you really want to put it in context I own a 1952 scammell explorer which is mot exempt and that weighs 13 tons , I maintain it well as it's my pride and joy .

I'm glad it's mot exempt because as fridge says if I took my scammell to Hgv testing station there is no way my 60 year old scammell will meet the modern standards of some 700 horse volvo / scania truck

  4. Hello

usually one guage is "contents pressure" and the other is "litres per min"

obviously the contents are what they are and you want the litres per minute set to around 18 :i-m_so_happy:

if you take your mig outside and it's a tad breezy you'll have to turn it up a bit to shield the weld.

As Fozsug says argon is not really suitable for mild steel welding ideally you could do with 5% argoshield or if you get air products it would be cougar 5 ^_^

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

  5. If you want a slip a turbo diesel in to your series , why don't you put a 200 tdi in it ?

It's a reasonably easy swop and has been covered in detail , at least with a 200 tdi everything is land rover :i-m_so_happy:

I think the 2.8 daihatsu is a pretty good engine and I have a feeling some have a timing chain instead of a belt , I'd imagine things like head gasket and engine bits are a bit spendy :(

    Just my thoughts

  6. Just had a miller 450 on demo as the agent insisted and I have to say its one of the worst welders ive ever used ,though it may be ok in spray mode.

Being drawn to the technical arc(make the oxford mig) pulse mig

Yes that's what I've just bought , did you struggle to get a nice setting ?

I really recommend you get a kemppi inverter mig on demo they really are nice

  7. Zoltan

I agree 100% with what your saying but once somebody casts doubt in your mind it's a could idea to get a second/forum opinion .

I didn't want to fit the ramp in my garage to find out that it's pants :(

And yes it was originally single phase

Judging by the replies so far I think I'll fit the ramp and give it a whirl

Are your ramps three phase or single ?

    Thanks

    Gary

  8. Our two post, although slow as hell lifts, my 110 with ease. I forget which make, Hoffner/Heffner??/ Its rated at 3 tonnes. The legs are really too deep to get under lowered cars so we have four bits of 2x4 which we have to use on these which is a pain in the backside. I really wish the legs were different but it's in, paid for and for the amount we use it we've got used to this annoying design

    Zoltan

I'm not too worried about lifting cars really although I might lift our golf up occasionally if I have to  the ramp is really/mainly for doing my land rovers :i-m_so_happy: .

  9. It depend on the quality of the ramp and its condition.

I have no problems with my very old bradbury 2 poster, whereas our newer bradbury struggles with poor leg configuration and actual lifting strength. Another of our ramps is an italian sourou? This wont touch anything but the smallest 4x4s.

All the above are screw type, 2.5t ramps

Your ramps suitabilty has more to do with its leg configuration than anything else.

    Dan

are your ramps single or three phase ?

I'll check on the manufacturer of mine tomorrow and I'll take a photo with my phone to see if anybody is using the same one

    Cheers

  10. I think the problem is just that 2 posts look scary when lifting something big. However they are just as safe as a 4 post if used correctly.

I think, what the mechanic was actually saying is "I don't like the look of 2 post lifts" not that yours is bad.

    Si

    Si ,

He was saying because the ramp I've bought is a single phase motor and is chain drive, say I lift a land rover off the deck 12" and stop and then try to lift again the ramp will blow a trip shortly followed by the world ending. :(

I pointed out that the ramp is rated 2500kgs and that a disco /110 is about 2000 kgs(according to Haynes book of lies) then I have approx 500kgs spare and also most/all lifting devices have a high safety factor  .

    Your thoughts folks

  11. Hello

I've recently bought a 2nd hand 2 post single phase 2.5 ton ramp/lift , it's the screw type with brass nuts on the top and a chain drive inside the basefrom one pillar across to the other .

I've been talking to a mechanic today who I'm doing a job for and he's convinced the ramp is pants ,will not lift a land rover and will be a complete waste of time (in his opinion)

So what I'm saying is has anybody got a similar ramp that they use for working on there land rover/4x4 or had any experience of them ?

I'll be using the ramp for my hobby and not everyday like in a 'garage enviroment'

    Cheers

  12. James ,

yes the rocky lane is brillaint , we had a great time to be fair just over too quickly

Try the little rocky lane in the dark, every rock's a surprise ;) Mo

I bet it is , the're bad enough in daylight :o

That looks great! I must get my Mrs to talk to your Mrs to learn a few things.

To be fair my wife enjoys greenlaning and the scammell  we take to shows :D , I take it er indoors is not too keen on the greenlaning ?

  13. Kev

yes the drive around the reservoir is something else , it feel like it's never going to end , we noticed a farm about half way round and then passed a shogun (probably the farmer) must be a right pain if you forget somat from the shop :hysterical:

The rocky lane that starts at the bottom of the dam is good as well !

    Cheers

    Gary

  14. Yes Mo , we certainly did :i-m_so_happy:

My wife booked it as a surprise and she had the discovery packed when I got home and told me to follow the sat nav.

It was the maiden voyage for the discovery , so was very pleased with how it performed , got stuck good and proper on the off road course at Llanerchinda Farm (first 3 pics) but managed to winch out of it :glare:

    Cheers
