  1. That's interesting, I would have thought that Land Rover would have standardised caliper pistons after about '93 and used the same in all models. The 92 Disco that I scrapped had vented discs but the '93 Disco I had at the time had solid discs, I would imagine that the pistons were the same though. I know the pistons from a 93 110 CSW are larger than my '84 110 caliper pistons as they went bigger early in the 1990's Not as easy as I thought all this brake bodging
  2. Thanks for that, I'll stick the Disco servo and master cylinder on as well, shouldn't be too hard to modify.
  3. Because he wants to be different.... My mate has a 130 with 2.8 Isuzu engine and he has a stainless steel silencer coming out of the off side wing about a foot from the bulkhead. It's self supporting and the tailpipe is just a little higher than the cab. He has no problems with fumes entering the cab and the pipe dosen't get THAT hot, a little too hot to grasp sometimes but mostly all ok. Probably get hot in traffic but no traffic where he lives I want my 90 exhaust to come up inside near the back corner and exit through the roof at the rear off side. Still working on it but it will happen.
  4. Well, got the 90 running last week and left it to do other things. Came back to it today and the 200tdi was reluctant to start, lumpy at first so I though fuel has run back to tank again, fixed that last week Any way got it running but back to the old problem but not as bad, not wanting to rev, missing badly at low revs but clearing higher up the range. Problem though as thick clouds of blue smoke from exhaust. I'm thinking piston rings but compressions were 400 on all cylinders, Head gasket maybe but no other signs apart from clouds of smoke and the smoke was on over run and not when engine under load. Pumping blue smoke out on tickover as well. I stood looking at the engine whilst it was ticking over and wondering how long it would take me to whip the engine out or even burn the barstard when I noticed via the clear No 1 neoprene leak off pipe that it had only a small drop of fuel in it. That cant be right, so I bled the leak off pipes until diesel came rushing out and straight away the exhaust smoke cleared. It was quite alarming to note that now there was just a whiff of black on hard throttle application and just a clear exhaust everywhere else. The blue smoke was still hanging around from two minute before when she was pumping it out but now there was nothing and all for the sake of air in the leak off system. Back on the road with a vengence now and very very happy that it wasn't serious.
  5. Have a word with the local constabulary, I'm sure you can drive it a reasonable distance to a place of repair pre the MOT test.
  6. Thanks, I'll check the seals in my 110 calipers then ready to go on
  7. noted, Probably pistons a bit stiff or some of them siezed then , I'll have a look when I change the wheels over, can't be doin with bad brakes Question still stands though as I have some 110 calipers in good order which would save me some money if I could just swap em as the have single line piping same as 90
  8. Good point, I've got a Disco master cylinder/servo set up in the shed, might have a go at fitting that when I get time, just want some brakes for now as the 90 ones are carp. It passed the MOT just before I bought it but I'm not happy with the brakes especially after driving the Disco for so long. Just thought that the bigger calipers and pistons would stop her better.
  9. Brakes useless on 90 so going to fettle calipers, was wondering if I could put my 1993 defender 110 CSW calipers on to the 1990 defender 90 axle. Any problems envisaged please thanks
  10. There is a small filter in the back of the pump which is worth checking, it's inside the leak off pipe return banjo bolt and there is a small hole in the bolt which is also worth checking. Other than that make sure no air leaks in fuel supply lines and renew leak off pipes. After that it gets expensive
  11. As above but try leak off pipes and lift pump in case fuel running back overnight and causing lumpyness on start up.
  12. Unfortunately only two doors and they are spoken for. Rear door is ok (its a 3 door van) Bulkhead is rotten as a pear and the nearside front wing has a dent where a Punto bounced off it. Off side one has no metal left where it bolts to the bulkhead. Not sellin much here am I ? Ribbed roof has a leaking sunroof in it and the rear tub is corroded where the mounts are. Roof rack going on ebay and I'm having the steering guard for my 90, tree sliders might be going on ebay if I cant chop em for the 90 as well. Wheels and tyres are up for grabs, standard steels with 9mm Insa Safari tyres maybe 100 quid I think. Decision made now it's getting the chop.
  13. I think compression test is a must before I continue, then put in some replacement injectors, I tried some 300tdi ones that I have but they are way too small. Could do with a known good set to try. . Right, we got some time today and did a compression test on the 200tdi. All cylinders at 400 thingies on the whatsit gauge so looking good. Not mechanical problem then. Next was to put all injectors back and refit the fuel pipes. My mate Malc noticed that the spill off pipe between one and two was split so we replaced it. On the list of things to check was the banjo bolt where the spill off pipe joins the back of the pump. There is a filter in it and a very small hole instead of a big one as in the fuel fed banjo bolt at the front of the injector pump. Blew this through with the air line and fitted a copper washer as one was missing, and put it back together. Fired up the engine and she ran, ticked over and revved when throttle applied, lots of white smoke on over run which slowly cleared. Engine will now start and run, it's a bit hesitant when throttle first applied but clears to rev freely as it should. Looks like problem solved and thanks to Station-Motorsport for the suggestion to check spill off and fuel return . I would never have thought that the fuel return system would be so important on what seems to be such a basic engine. Job done though and thanks to all who contributed.
  14. I would check spill off pipes and renew them anyway also change the fuel filter if it's been on a while and check all fuel pipes for cracks or splits especially near the joints. There is also a small filter in the banjo bolt that connects the spill off pipe to the injector pump and the little hole in the shank can get blocked and cause problems. Another thing to check is the diaphram rubber on top of the pump.
  15. Or you could remove the fuse to the radio etc and see what happens. If still draining the remove all fuses in turn until drain ceases. the drain is then on that circuit (the last fuse pulled)
  16. That'll be the next thing to check. is it possible that the injectors were not tested properly and is the replacement pump a good one? I dont want to go spending 100's of pounds on it as I don't have the money, I've already spent 100quid on the pump and a tenner getting the injectors tested so dont want the bill to get up to the cost of a replacement engine which I would put at 350 pounds. So new pump is out....replacement pump has been retimed and I trust that so looking for some cheap replacement injectors to eliminate that. I think compression test is a must before I continue, then put in some replacement injectors, I tried some 300tdi ones that I have but they are way too small. Could do with a known good set to try. .
  17. Right, that's it I give up. Still wont run even with intercooler pipe back on. 300 injectors will not fit in 200 so that's out, looks like I'll have to take the engine out and dump it.
  18. She's had a fair bit of work done but been stood for six months or more, had a new fuel tank a few years ago and new front diff recent and new headlamps etc etc, no expense spared but gone to the dogs now.
  19. What would you be looking for, just bits or lots of big bits..
  20. Another what's it worth question I suppose even though I think it's scrap. Bought a replacement V8 for my 110 earlier this year and went about sorting things out as MOT looming and I wanted to get her in tip top order. Decided that the easiest way was to remove the engine along with the LT85 and Disco transfer box as a lump, the transfer box is very worn and it was my intention to replace it anyway. So, out it all came and I split the engine from the boxes ready to install the V8 and hook it all up with the LPG etc. Other things overtook me and she now stands sad and forlorn in the field with no signs of me ever getting it all back together. thing is I need to put it together so as I can sell it but dont have the time or the energy to do it. Would it sell as it is do you think or shall I break it for spares,
  21. That's one thing I will check before setting fire to it. The misfire and smoke starts as soon as the throttle is opened and the problem is the same as when the pipes were connected. Could be that the problem has been cured though and it is overfueling so I'll definitely check that. Ta
  22. Going to check pipes from pump to injectors and swap injectors to see if that will fix it. After that I'm completely baffled as half a dozen knowledgeable have said dont worry I'll fix it no problem and then are as baffled as me. Have had all the things that I've checked suggested plus broken cam, rings, pistons etc. Thing is it was running fantastic and then suddenly lost power so I dont think it can be mechanical.
  23. Checked the diaphram on the old pump and the pipe was ok not kinked etc. The 'new' pump diaphram hasn't been checked but the problem didn't change with the fitment of the 'new' pump The problem is I now believe fuel related but. all parts checked and timings etc Let's hope the 300 injectors improve things. Just a thought, I've been testing with the intercooler pipe off so maybe I'll put it back on for a quick test before doing injectors.
  24. See if this works http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Discovery-decals-/160449571771?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item255b8a2bbb
