  1. I'm rolling 265x75x16 tyres, running standard series gearbox with overdrive getting ready to fit 200tdi whats a good diff ratio setup ( want to fit a rear diff locker ) have Salisbury rear and rover front As always thank you to all that respond
  2. Trying to see ( without pulling the sump off ) if my 2.25 diesel is a 3 or 5 bearing type crank It has a series of number and finishes with the letter K Any help greatly appreciated
  3. Help !! Bought a recondition series 3 gearbox ( ex army reconditioned ) by all accounts it looks recondition, internals look new, gears, shafts, synchro, seals etc all looked perfect. Was absolutely spotless inside and out, not a drop of old oil any where. Installed into my 80 inch filled it with the correct oil and it runs perfect In fact it the smoothest and quietist series box I've driven, changes gears up and down with ease and wait for it ------ it doesn't leak oil !. But here's the problem under load ( down hill ) it jumps out of 1st gear The box did sit for some time before I installed it into the 80 inch some of it in the weather ( under a tarp ) Could it be these spring I hear mentioned in some forums or is this wishful thinking and if this is the problem whats the best way and parts to fix it with. As always any help appreciated
  4. Hi to all that have replied it seems running the series gearbox behind a 200 tdi is a much debated subject I do have a couple of question some mention running 3.54 diffs why is this a better ratio At the moment my 80s set up is 265 x 75 x 16 tyres with 4.7 ratio diffs and a overdrive on the series box Salisbury rear and rover front
  5. Well my 80inch is just about finished, now that it's set up for camping / off roading at any given moment it's carrying a wee bit of weight Roof top tent Side awning Long range fuel tank Winch Pull out kitchen Water and fuel can holders Dual battery setup On board compressor Etc etc So when loaded I'm going to take it to my local ( luckily well known Australia wide ) spring manufacturer I really want to try and get the 80 to flex a little when off roading as some of you'd be aware there a bit stiff I've tried to inquire about parabolic springs but nobody make them for a 80inch At the moment it's got wider springs on the front and narrow on the rear with good quality gas/oil shocks As always any advice or help is greatly appreciated
  6. First of all thanks to all that have posted answers to my previous question re the modifications to my 80 inch Has anyone done a push pull type power steering ( tractor type ) on there series landys if so any chance of a list of parts used.
  7. In preparation to eventually putting a 200 tdi ( which I'll pull down and reco as required ) into my 80 inch I want to rebuild a good, strong series gearbox. Ive read how you can adapt a disco gearbox to fit into a series 2 or 3 but with the s1 80 inch I don't have the luxury of space. I don't want to cut the chassis ( galvanised ) or shorting the prop shaft any more ( running Salisbury diff ) So my question is, can a series gearbox be built to take the added strain of a tdi motor. Does anyone do like a rebuild kit etc with the stronger components ? Here in Australia ( maybe it's the same in the uk ) I've had many friends get there L/R gearboxes professionally rebuilt for them to fail in under 500 miles!!. When asked why all said that the replacement parts ( synchro etc ) though new where rubbish. So can it be done, is there suppliers out there that Can supply stronger components or do I just keep a good gearbox or two on hand if and when one fails At the moment my 80 inch has a early series 3 with 2a bell-housing with overdrive As always any advice and help is greatly appreciated
  8. Until I do the 200tdi engine swap in my 80 inch I want to squeeze a wee bit more power from the old 2.25 diesel motor. Background on the motor is it was recondition 20ks ago, piston and rings, bearing , head reco etc etc. Has anyone done LPG to there 2.25D apparently it gives you more power but not the strain of a turbo Here's what I was thinking in the interim ( 200tdi swap ) Extractors and a good 2 -3/4 inch free flow exhaust Maybe gas flow the head Tweak the fuel pump along with checking the injectors Swapping to a high end synthetic oil LPG fluff system to the air intake All and any help is always appreciated
  9. Jason, metal health is something all should talk about, take it from me you are not alone, take it day by day week by week etc find people you can trust with your inner thoughts and feel comfortable talking to they then can explain what going on inside your head and help you recover, then when you on the mend make yourself of aware of any recurring symptoms that trigger the irrational thoughts. Then here the kicker, once your 100% better ( which through time you shall be ) talk to others you'd be surprised how many people once they knew I'd been there done that opened up to getting help for themselves. Men seem to think mental illness is a sign of weakness, wrong,100% wrong doing nothing is the only weakness. Believe it or not my 1949 series 1 80 inch which I've owned for over 30 years has been my main therapy so when next you feel blue go the green oval badge !!!
  10. If you can afford them bf Goodrich ( the new mud ones ) or the cooper st both are great tyres Here in Australia the bf muddies are what most of my mates are going for apparently for a mud tyre there great in the wet !!
  11. Having galvanised 3 bulkheads ( 2 x series 1 and 1 x series 3 ) I've not had any problems the advantages speak for themselves. You must though make sure that the company that you go with has done them before. My series 1 80 inch chassis and bulkhead were done over 30years ago, heaps of beach driving and no rust problem. If your worried about warping bolt bracing bars then remove them after.
  12. Has anybody fitted parabolic springs to a 80 inch , I know you can get them to fit 86",88" etc Getting the fronts in no problem but the rear seems to be a different matter
  13. Thanks to all that have replied, Re brakes at the moment are very good power assisted stops nice and straight but I am going to do a disc upgrade with the engine swap. Yes the 2.25 fitted in like a glove with keeping the original chassis mounts and it powers along nice but now with the camping set up ie the roof top tent it power drains on hill or heavy soft sand then the gear changes start. Here in Australia we don't have the engine options plus even though I've mechanically modified the 80 inch it's always with land rover parts. Regarding photo as soon as I can work out how to upload I will tried last night but it said the file was to big etc.
  14. To all that can help, having owned my 1949 80 inch for over 30 yrs it's had a number of modifications, and before the purist have a go at me its mine and I'll do what I want with it . I use my landy every day and it's been places people would shudder as my needs change so does the landy as required hence the post. I've now passed the baton and given the old girl to my son and we've totally set it up for camping at any given time. ( grab your food and cloths and go ) Roof top tent, awning, water tank, long range fuel tanks, fridge, inverter, winch, roll bar, rock sliders ( not that you need them on a 80 inch ) 4 point harness, bucket seats, spot lights etc etc etc you get the picture So here my question Currently it's got Salisbury rear diff, series 3 109 front diff, series 3 gearbox with series 2a bell-housing, over drive, 2.25 diesel. Sitting on disco rims with 265 x 75 x 16 tyres Can without cutting the chassis ( galvanised ) a 200 or 300 tdi fit inside the existing engine bay ? If it can be fitted should I leave the turbo and intercooler on it ( only once in 30 odd years snapped an axle and that was coming out of my driveway !! ) I've got access to both engines I can have which ever one I want Want some real help, being series 1 and a 1949 80 inch and here in Australia not many have done this type of conversion, a few have done it to there 86 inch As mention any help is greatly appreciated links, photos, youtube etc etc the more research I can do the better and more reliable the old girl will become Thank you to all that can help
