I'm rebuilding an early Disco rear axle of 1991 (H) vintage, which I have put under the back of my 90, and one of the stub axles is a bit worse for wear, so I am wondering to myself...will one of the stubs from the original drum-braked 1992 axle fit in it's place? The part numbers are different, but they both use the 'flat side' location method rather than the 'peg' method, and they both originally had those silly outer seals and rubber-lined track spacers (which I'll be changing for the later inner-seal-only and thrust washer setup), so I'm thinking they should fit? Can anyone confirm either way?
  2. That's if it's a Td5 style electronic speedo. If it's the older mechanical type, then the cable may be the culprit. Check it is intact along it's length and hasn't fallen out. If the cable is good, then the speedo head may have failed internally.
  3. Certainly looks like it's part of the top screen rail, and not a separately available part. Does your rail have the holes where the rivets should be? Might be possible to fabricate one, perhaps?

  6. Just sent mine off today to get the revenue weight changed, attatched a letter and a photo of the VIN plate. Will see how long it takes them!
  7. Don't forget that Britpart can be a supplier of OEM parts too. My Series III's lower swivel bearings came in a Britpart box, but were proper Timken items. It said OEM on the side of the box.
  8. Station wagons had 'estate', but since that uses a different VIN letter (B) it's not an option here. Ross' choices were limited to: Basic Soft Top Pickup Hardtop Van Commercial Or variations on those. Then again, mine says 'LIGHT 4x4 UTILITY' under the body type, and it's an 'A' too.

  13. I have a big springer one, and also a 'Rubber Duck' one which is only about 15" long and more discrete. The PSM-1 mount is good, very strong and does the job. As an aside, Jim at 4x4cb is a very nice chap to deal with
  14. Hmm, I discounted a V because I couldn't see any difference in angle of the bores....but clearly I was mistaken! It certainly looks like those diagrams.
  15. Is it a U engine? With two cranks, linked by an intermediate gear?

  17. Yes, but then you'd lose the vehicle's identity and it would need an IVA. In theory it doesn't matter what you do with the old chassis, as long as it doesn't get put under a road-going car, but I have heard that they do like to see it has been disposed of. I am going to send them photos of the old one cut up when it comes to notify them of mine. Edit: Ralph got there first
  18. The above is for 'radically altered vehicles', so things that started off as one vehicle but has had so many components changed that it's identity is called into question. For example a Defender 90 with a different engine/transmission/axles/suspension system/steering. In this case the points are totalled up and if they meet the criteria (8) the vehicle can keep it's original registration, and if not then it will require IVA and subsequent Q-plate. A re-built vehicle, using a mix of old and new parts, must comply with my reply further above in order to retain the registration. Further details here

For maps, I'm getting the IGN Top 25 maps of France for Memory Map in preparation for when I eventually go back there, but will also be taking some route-planner maps (AA etc.) Carrefour is great, L'Eclerc (I think that's how it's spelled) is good too. And DeCathalon is sort of like an outdoors type store. I can reccomend the Central Massif if you like mountains, some impressive passes and gorges around there. The Tarn is verynice, Millau is a favourite of mine. I have stayed in a campsite called Les Rivages which is on the bank of the river Dourbie The gorges around the area are spectacular, plenty to do whether it's just exploring or white water rafting down the river. You can also para-sail off the top of the hills around the town, the views from up there are sublime. And there's also the brilliantly beautiful Viaduc de Millau to look at in the background. Probably my favourite part of France
  20. Im going to place my next order with Brit-Car, give them a chance to impress me I have spoken to them on the phone, and they were very helpful. They answer their phone, which is one plus they have over LR Series.

  22. The 'body', so bulkhead et all, has no relation to the tax-exempt status. The chassis 'is' the vehicle, and it is that which has the identity. If it was replaced like-for-like with a new manufactured item then there will be no issues with that. With regard to re-building it, the DVLA use the follwing system to determine whether rebuilt vehicles can retain the original registration. They go on to say: So in reality it's very simple. In your case, you should be fine as you'll still have the axles, suspension, and transmission from the original vehicle.
