  1. Dave, I have been to both Slindon and Boxgrove. Enjoyed both greatly, and definitely saw some good winch action zardos, Thank you for your views. I can see the 'buy twice, buy progressively' philosophy may well be the way to go. Don't like the sound of a £4,500 winch setup though, granted that's probably top spec everything but man that's a lot of money. James, Funnily enough the TDS range what was I was looking at before I first saw a hydro winch. The way it pulled without any apparent effort amazed me. From what I have seen and heard the TDS models are a good bet though, would probably be a good start point for me. As for Saleys, well they do appear to be the dogs danglies but I imagine the cost is rather on the ridiculous side Nige, I didn't think of the mechanical driven option, thanks. I will have to see what's available.
  2. Okay, so I have 1 3/4" from the front face of the snorkel to where itwould meet the wheelarch spat if moved forward. I believe there wouldbe the ability for some 'give' in the wheelarch though, or maybe youcould snip a bit out of it? Would only need to be a fraction. [Moved to seperate post for clarity]
  3. Oh I see, you mean in that dimension. I will have a look for you, although from memory it will be tight.
  4. Mmm, you do speak sense Nige. I will have to have a big think. I have a habit of buying 'the best' (or at least what I percieve to be the best) all the time, possibly foolishly. I spent £800 on a water-cooling system for my PC...a £400 system would have done it, but it wouldn't have been all nice CNC'd aluminium parts and electronically controlled.I'm not against electric winches per se, it's just it strikes me as one needing to have to do a lot of upgrading to enable them to do what a hydro system can do out of the box. Granted, the cost probably works out roughly similar though, so maybe that's not so much of an issue. The lack of drive assist with the hydro system (assuming PTO driven and not belt etc) isn't something I can really decide on due to having never winched myself and therefore not really knowing whether drive assist is something I most certainly need or not. I see many others manage without. Looking realistically at the cost, the option you suggested of a cheap (!) second hand 8274 or similar does seem like the sensible route. There's on on eBay now for £500 odd, with a rope. Does mean sorting out my second battery for a proper one though, and my alternator too...85A probably isn't enough to sustain it. Thanks all for the help so far
  5. Well, if you don't have a hole that side (I assume you're talking 300Tdi side...off-side), then you really have two options: 1. Get a second hand 300Tdi wing (or skin) from somewhere 2. 'Fit' snorkel, and then drill the required hole using the snorkel itself as a template I can't give measurements as mine is 200Tdi side I'm afraid. (If I have mis-interpreted and you want to put it 200Tdi side (near-side), then in my opinion this would be a waste and unnecessary effort due to the difficulties explained. Especially if your airbox is the other side) Hope that helps
  6. Yes, at least on a 200Tdi it does. Because of the heater box, there is this funny shaped plastic bit that moves the air down to the gap between heater motor and inner wing. Under the washer bottle. Due to this, the Safari for the 200Tdi just ends at the outer wing and everything inside is the hard to seal Land Rover stuff. On the 300Tdi designs there is no such space issue, so the Safari for those has a spigot (is that the right word? The 'tube' you referred to ) which takes the pipe leading directly to the airbox. Less places to leak, so better solution in my opinion.
  7. Thanks for the reply Tony. Speed isn't a major issue for me, it's more for self-recovery (to begin with at least) than competitive winching. I saw at least four at Hogmoor yesterday, got pulled out by two Second hand ones are always an option. If one is available at the right time and for the right price
  8. Well I can't comment on the cage issue but I can testify as to their strength: Landed my 90 on it and it did little damage. Some scuffs where West Sussex left it's mark, but no alterations to shape etc. For what it's worth, when I eventually progress to the wonderful highlands of cage ownership, I will likely do away with the Safari and make up a custom intake all the way to the airbox. The issue with Safaris is that they rely on the Land Rover gubbins inside the wing to seal...and believe me it just doesn't
  9. Hello all, I'd like to query your collective brains on an issue I'm currently trying to decipher. In intend to purchase a winch sometime in the new year, will be my first, and I am trying to decide whether to buy an electric system or to go for a hydraulic one. The hydraulic system appeals to me as I like the idea of clean, quiet, efficient power, and I like to over-spec things where I can. Having seen them in action at various playdays I've somewhat fallen in love with the technology. Money is as ever a factor (wrong side of £1,500 for a MM setup ), but I can just spend longer saving up if necessary. What I would like to know is, is there any reason why a first-timer like myself should stray away from a hydraulic system like the Milemarkers? Are they harder to use, more dangerous? I am a strong believer in the buy right, buy once philosophy, and I would like to start entering some challenge events in the next year or two. So as I say above, my question is really whether a hydro setup is suitable for a first-timer, rather than which is better hydro or leccy. All advice welcome Many thanks
  10. My word. Thank god for the steel bulkhead and windscreen frame is all I can say. Given that the above is the only built-in rollover protection in a standard Defender, and all else there is are some thin aluminium panels, a roll cage is definitely worth it's weight in gold. Shame they cost so damn much
  11. Won't be covered by car insurance, they all get out on natural disasters like floods/storms etc as 'acts of god' and therefore uninsurable. He may have other insurance (flood insurance?) which will cover it though. For his sake I hope so, could get awful expensive otherwise
  12. But I did get out! I'm sure someone got images of it, I saw plenty of cameras around
  13. I wouldn't have said a 27mm socket was an infrequently used size either, it is your wheel nuts after all Unless yours are different
  14. It may be because I'm a shorty, but I found no appreciable difference in the internal room inside when I went over to truck cab. I never had the seats all the way back anyway though Were you the white one with no tailgate?
  15. My my, that monstrosity appears to be a Defender underneath Bet it sounds good though.
  16. Well that was good fun Thanks to all those who pulled/winched me out. Apparently the marshals said I would be the first to get stuck...and I was! In the 'lake'. Anyone got any photos? Ie ones of my escape from the lake the second time (quite an achievement if I may say so myself), when Nige (I think) refused to throw me a rope
  17. Haha yes, obviously the last owner stood on it while it was resting on the hitch. Another reason to go side-swing if one has a NATO or another high-mounted tow hook
  18. I've heard http://www.landroversuk.co.uk/ are quite good for this. Based in Frome, Somerset.
  19. Dreamweaver works as both a WYSIWYG and a code editor. I use a bit of both, doing both the PHP and actual design work with it. Works very well. It's not free, but can be if you know what I mean Whatever you do go for, best of luck!
  20. The standard intake hosing on my 200Tdi goes through the gap between heater and inner wing, under the washer bottle. As Mr Milemarker says above. I don't see why an N/A would be any different?
  21. Yes, the Td5 dash binnacle has backlit heater controls. The bulbs are in the Td5 loom items 1 and 5 on this image: There is a standard Td5 clock, have you considered that? As seen here (this is a full set, but shows the clock far right).
  22. Due to financial constraints, I don't think I will be able to join you guys for this trip. Would love to, but the Land Rover is literally bleeding me dry and so needs to be holed up for a bit. Hope you all have a good time though
