  1. Thanks guys. No it's not the centrifuge. Mine already sounds like s dive bombing Stuka on shy down. This is quite different. Almost sounds like a motor running or juddering. Hard to describe.
  2. For some time my 2002 disco has randomly made an odd vibrating noise (almost sounds like an air compressor running) after the engine is switched off. It sometimes pulses for 3 or 4 times, about a second long each time. Any ideas?
  3. Thanks very much guys. Part ordered and normal service hopefully will be resumed shortly!
  4. Hi. I note that my hose in the attached photo is weeping from the little screw plug that looks broken so will need to change the hose. Thanks
  5. Thanks very much for the responses, obviously being paranoid! Thanks for the advice re-the tank pump Neil but I replaced it with a new VDO unit around a year ago after the cheap generic replacement one crapped out after around the same amount of time. Proves that you get what you pay for.
  6. Hi. A have a couple of quick queries regarding Td5 servicing. I recently did the oil, fuel, air filter change on my 2002 Disco and I had bit of an issue getting it restarted again after changing the fuel filter. The book doesn't say anything about pre-filling the fuel filter to reduce air being sucked through into the system but I've been wondering whether I should have done so. I had to run the air bleeding sequence 3 times before it coughed into life which doesn't seem right. Any thoughts appreciated. Also, I've noticed that my oil centrifuge really whines when the engine is turned off. I was hoping that it might improve after the service but it still sounds like a dive-bombing Stuka as it winds down. Is this somethnig I should be concerned about? To my way of thinking: noise = friction = wear = damage. Thanks
  7. Thanks for all the very useful replies which I will follow up. I have come across those FM transmitters before but I've always been doubtful of their sound quality. Maybe the technology has improved now.
  8. Thanks very much. Unfortunately it looks as though this adaptation does not work with the 6 CD changer set-up I have. Maybe there's another option.
  9. Thanks very much. Looks do-able although not sure about finding a CD of perfect silence!
  10. Hi. I have a 2002 Disco and would be interested to know if it is possible to adapt the standard radio/cd stack player to accept an auxiliary connection for an external music source. Don't really want to change the head unit. Ta.
  11. Yes, you're quite right. On the flip-side, I've got a mate who bought an imported Alfa Spider from Chistchurch which had been converted from LHD to RHD. It took him two years to get it passed in NZ and had to have a heap of mods done before it was accepted. It's a crazy world!
  12. Thanks a lot for the feedback. I managed to tighted the small banjo connection to the pump and cleaned it up. It weeps a tiniy amount of fluid so not a real biggy. Ironically, after spending a couple of hours trying to sort it out I took it back to the WOF station for a re-check and he just passed it without even looking at it. Glad I did'nt do more. I've always had my suspicions about the thoroughness of VTNZ and now they're confirmed. I confess that when one of their 'technicians' takes 5 minutes to figure out how to open the bonnet - I think that's a cause for concern!
  13. Hi. Took the Disco for its WOF today and it got pulled for a slight leak on the steering pump. I cleaned it up and it appears to be weeping fluid very slightly between the pump and the mount (see photo) Is this a sign that the pump is shot? Seems to be working fine apart from occasionally making a bit of a noise on full lock but it's done that for the last 75000km!
  14. Yep. This is the best way to empty the tank. Takes about 5 minutes from start to finish to get the pump out. Pipe in, and syphon out the fuel. Job done.
  15. Thanks for advice guys. I've never been aware of the centrifuge whining before and I've changed it several times since having the Disco (never used genuine parts) but good to know that it's nothing terminal!
  16. I thought I'd resurrect this thread just to add that I've just installed a new VDO fuel pump and the Discovery is once more silent. Gone is the incessent scream of the old cheap fuel pump, a sound like air being squeezed out of a baloon. It just goes to show that you get what you pay for. Mind you, even the VDO pump only cost me UKP150 or NZ$360 which is still about NZ$650 less than my local dealer wanted. Thief. On a seperate point, I have just replaced the oil centrifuge as part of the service and I note that the new Bearmach unit whines quite loudly when the engine is switched off. Anyone else come across this?
  17. Thanks. Sounds like I need to have conversation with the guy I bought the service pack from.
  18. Yes I would have expected the Bearmach to be the right fit-they're a reputable manufacturer.
  19. Thanks for the replies guys. Regarding the fuel filter, this is the first time I've ever been sent a filter that the sensor won't fit. I had assumed that it was standard. The thread in the base of the new Bearmatch filter is slightly smaller than the older Britpart one. Interesting about priming the filter and I agree, it's a lot of air to clear out of the system otherwise. In future, I'll prime if with diesel and see how that works.
  20. Hi. I've just serviced my 2002 Discovery (252km) and was curious about the new Bearmach fuel filter I was sent as part of the service pack I bought off Ebay. The fuel filter on my Disco has an electrical fitting on the bottom which I think is a water sensor or something. The new filter came with the standard plastic water drain thing which I usually unscrew, discard and replace with the electronic sensor. This time I found that the sensor thread did not fit the Bearmach filter to could not install it. Instead I left the plactic drain screw in place and tied the sensor out of the way. Everthing seems to work OK (apart from ther sensor obviously) but I was curious as to why the sensor didn't fit the filter. I thought it was a standard fit. The other query I have is that I always find that when I change the fuel filter, I have to bleed the fuel line to get the Disco started whereas the book says that you don't need to. This time I had a real job getting it going. Is there something that I'm not doing or doing wrong? Should I fill the new filter with diesel first to prime it? Thanks Ged
  21. I've found a Lucas pump on Ebay. Would this be considered a good enough quality pump and likely to work without the incessant whining that I'm currently dealing with?
  22. Thanks very much. Sounds like I need to part with some cash and bin the cheap aftermarket pump.
  23. I have a feeling that the first one I took out (which presume was the original one) was a Bosch. I'm not sure that Land Rover ever made pumps but I could be wrong. I'll order from the UK because something like that will be well over $1000 here in New Zealand.
  24. Thanks, that's an interesting perspective. I am looking therefore at replacing the cheap after-market pump that I installed laste year and wondering what I should be replacing it with. Lucas? Bosch? Which would be the best choice? Thanks
  25. Thanks very much for the offer but I've ordered some through the local dealer. Not as expensive as is expected.
