  1. Left things to cool down overnight and went for a run today. The engine got up to temperature and sat at 90 deg for a while. Then went up to 105 deg for a few minutes and dropped back to 88 to 95 deg and sat there for the rest of the trip. No leaks or loss of fluid and engine seems better with only a very slight misfire. So I'm assuming that a misfire that I have read about in other forums and posts could be related to engine temperature.
  2. Just wondered if there is a possibility of an air lock in the system? I did pour the coolant in slowly but it now has an extra restriction in the system?
  3. Hi All, Facelift Freelander, TD4, 2004. After a few months of trying to find the reasons for poor performance and blue smoke etc, I decided to buy a OBD2 dongle and downloaded Torque Pro to my phone. Looking through the forums to see what I should expect in readings everything seemed within limits except for coolant temperature which would not go above 60 deg c. Knowing what a pain the original thermostat can be to change I fitted an 88 deg c inline stat in the top hose and took it for a quick drive last night. To say the difference in the feel of the engine was amazing is an understatement. Up to temp in 3 miles, 88 deg on the OBD reading and car temp gauge sitting in the middle of the range. Buoyed with excitement that I had resolved the problems I took it for a longer drive this morning. All well when it got to 88 deg on the phone reading but kept on rising and at one point reached 105 deg. Fluctuating between 98 and 104 depending on what sort of driving I was doing, mostly flat, but speeds up to 55 took it higher and sitting in traffic below 100 again. I did stop and check there were no leaks and there was coolant in the tank. When I stopped the engine fan was running, never heard it start up before! Question is, do I need to worry about 105 deg and what should I expect it to sit at normally? During all this the temp gauge in the car sat in the middle and showed no sign of overheating. Sorry for long post but wanted to give all the information, by the way it has the modified PCV and a new coolant temp sender.
  4. Well, I removed the inlet manifold and replaced the ECT. This I hoped would cure my problem of blue smoke on startup and once the engine was warm a missfire and rough running. Before you suggest, I have replaced the engine breather! When I took the manifold off I noticed there was a oil on the face of the head around the inlets as though the gaskets weren't sealing. One in particular was worse. I cleaned up all the faces around the inlets so there would be a good seal. Turning to the inlet to clean the faces and gaskets of that I noticed that one of the cover top adaptors was missing an insert. It had not dropped off when I removed it, I was very careful with that. I am assuming someone has had the manifold off in the past and lost it, I decided to move one from the end and fit it in the middle missing one. After reassembly and first startup I was supprised to see no blue smoke and a long run, well long for the Isle of Wight, the engine felt better with no missfire. The big test will come tomorrow with a startup from cold. The question is, is there anywhere that sells these inserts, for those that don't know they are like a rubber washer with a metal washer bonded to the top. I have looked on the usual sites but found nothing yet, or do I actually need one? Thanks for reading, Mew
  5. Thanks for that FridgeFreezer, thats my job for Sunday sorted then.
  6. Hi, Can anyone tell me the exact location of the Engine coolant temperature sensor? RAVE tells me, "The ECT sensor is located in the engine block at the front of the engine." Does that mean the side nearest the radiator or the offside engine compartment? I have looked all over but cannot see it, if someone can give me an idiots guide to where it is and what may need to be taken off to access it easier that would be great. I have Googled it and there are lots of pictures pertaining to where it should be but nothing conclusive yet. Many thanks in advance. Mew
  7. OK, so an update on this problem. 1. Replaced the PCV filter and gave the housing a good clean out and fitted back. 2. Took the ERG off and gave it a good clean. 3. Checked the airflow connector, no sign of corrosion. Started engine up, a bit of blue smoke but I was expecting that, misfire still there. Wondered if I had some bad fuel, last filled up with Tesco 97.7p a litre stuff and now 1/4 full, so filled up with non supermarket fuel and added a bottle of Redex. Took it for a longish run. It will run well at 40 to 60mph and not feel sluggish. At low revs and low gear accelerating it sounds 'rattily' like an old diesel engine. Also note it does not rattle as much when it is cold. One thing that is confusing me is the temperature gauge which sits at about 1/4 to a 1/3rd when hot and driving, if I stop and leave the engine running it will move to 1/2 way, rev the engine and it still misfires but if I drive off the engine sounds better until the gauge drops again. Last week on a 200 mile trip before all this started happening the gauge dropped to almost cold, recovering slightly if I turned the interior heater off. I have also noticed that the engine heater stays on then the engine should be up to temperature, I would have thought it would turn off when it had done it's job to save fuel? Running out of ideas apart from checking the electrical connectors on the injectors but that's a job for tomorrow. Any comments very welcome and sorry for the long post.
  8. Mew Looks like the first one for Isle of Wight.
  9. Thanks for replying Fridge freezer, I did find a ref in 'another forum' to this pipe and it should be open, so I disconnected it this morning. Still got my misfire but now got an original filter kit for the crankcase breather which I will fit tomorrow. Went to my local BMW dealer and he wanted 68 pounds for a modified pcv! Cheers Mew.
  10. Hi to all, new to this forum and Freelanders so hope someone can help? I have a Freelander 1 2004 TD4. Did my first big trip last weekend, 600 miles mostly motorway. Towards the end she started to sound as though she was missfiring at low revs, seemed to pull away and accelerate ok before this. Starting became difficult, took 3 times mostly and blue smoke from exhaust. Looking on the forums it seemed like it may be the PCV, so I took that off today, it is the pre BMW version. Gave it a clean up and will order a new modified one tomorrow. While taking the covers off I noticed a pipe hanging loose and a metal pipe nearby at the back of the engine. I connected them together and the engine does seem to run better. I have attached a photo and would like confirmation the two pipes should go together? Thanks in advance for any help.
