I’ll have to do something. At worst I have some zinc rich black spray paint (that would require periodic touch ups)

I wasn’t keen on sending away for zinc plating for risk of hydrogen embrittlement.

maybe I could do one of those DIY chemical electro set ups. (More bloody research 🤦🏻‍♂️😁)

I’ve already pressed half of them in, but they do stick out beyond the drive flange mounting surface so it’s still possible to place the hubs studs down in a solution and the first 5mm will get done at least…

I know the UK is worse for rust in ways, but it’s a pain here. The rear of chassis is a mess and I just had to grab my front calipers out of a storage tub due to them starting to head south badly…

my kingdom for a real shed lol…

Maybe you can let it electronic galvanizing? Hydrogen embrittlement is mostly only problem with thermal galvanizing. Also keep in mind the tensile strenght, this has impact on the fact you will get hydrogen embrittlement.

With factory 3.54 diffs, MD30 low , 1.1-1 high , the ZF 6 speed manual and 33” tyres I’ll have ~78-1 1st low and 2nd-6th low will be pretty much LR 300Tdi Def’r factory ratios (1-5 R380). High range gives me about 2050 rpm at 100km/h.

Getting low range and high range where I wanted them isn’t possible with diff gears and high range swap.

Some nice first gear ratio. Overall I think it's better to have some more spread in high and low range for technical driving compared to stock gearing.

Mine will have Ashcroft ATB, 1.1-1 high and 4.32 low range, steel bushed and extended sump with girdle. I made some tooling to help with these.

I now have an X5 , ready for engine and gearbox donation. Which is good, but also means my transmission cross member and probably even chassis overlays (to repair/strengthen corrosion) will be no good.

What are the gearbox ratios of the X5? Think you will get some nice crawl ratios, even with 3.54 geared diffs.
