  1. Hi Stephen - sorry for the late reply to your query on Nakumat. Not sure if they're currently selling the fridges - been almost twelve months out of Kenya now. They did do some of the heavy duty Coleman coolers which may be suitable if travelling between towns every 3-4 days to refill on ice? Currently down in Lusaka, Zambia. I'll look into making a set of sliders. thanks again
  2. Hi, Does anyone know anyone manufacturing sill rock sliders in a style similar to that fitted to the original Tomb Raider Land Rover with the recovery swivel eyes at the ends? I've seen that Schumacher's in Nairobi use them on their vehicles and think they look quite good. Thanks guys
  3. I should add that government Land Rovers really only get used for road and dirt roads, never any intense off road travelling or so on, so I'm hoping that they shouldn't have had too difficult a life...
  4. That's what I'm looking to do as I don't like drop down rear doors. I currently run two spares on the back of the CSW as it's built for game parks and overlanding. (I have used them both in the middle of a game park before... "Honey, can you watch for lions please?"!!!). Thanks for the pics, great inspiration for me - I appreciate it.
  5. It's all a bit delicate as they're government vehicles and I'm not actually eligible to buy them, although there are no shortage of local government workers who'll buy them on my behalf. The vehicles seem to all be very good structurally with only light surface rusting on the chassis. Engines have had little in the way of servicing, so are my biggest worry. The ones I saw yesterday are all 200 TDi models. Body work relatively straight, Brownchurch roof racks but interiors have had all the foam etc gutted from them so need upholstering. But then for $100-150 US per vehicle, it seems viable to buy a couple to build one and exchange the parts vehicle back to local garages for any parts I do need in excess of what I have with two vehicles. Anyone need 200 TDi cylinder heads? Appears we're down by the head with the over here. The guy in charge of auctioning the vehicles has told me of even better condition vehicles in other villages, and he's sourcing those for me at the moment. I'm in the bush at the moment, but will try and post some pics when I get back to civilisation, or as near as damn it.
  6. OK - maybe beginning to create a monster there with the SIII / 110 hybrid. I'm going into the government yards tomorrow to see what I can find. There are a few Tdis and so on, so I'll post up some pictures tomorrow to get some opinions on what's worth buying. The Tdis should be around $150 but they've been stood for a year or so.
  7. Thanks. I was wondering if any one could independently let me know the differences. I've ballsed up the codes a bit - Gwyn Lewis seems to use N73GL - presumably specifically valved for him?
  8. Thanks - enjoyed the link. I've found an OK Series III body. Am curious as to whether a 300Tdi into a petrol 110 chassis, maintaining the LT77 gearbox and mounting the engine further back would allow a Series III body to be fitted...? It's just that there are a LOT of Land Rovers lying around here in a hot, sunny climate and all of them going fairly cheap so am overcome with probably stupid ideas... Just always liked Series III bodies, but not leaf springs!
  9. Ballsy move - good looking CSW that! Mine's a lot ropier with roof hatches which are flexing it too much. I can get hold of a crew cab roof and rear bulkhead plus cab back for around $75. It's a Series III, so hopefully should be ok. Thanks for the roof height info. I will have to fabricate it as it's too expensive to import things into where I am in Africa, although there's no shortage of local fabricators.
  10. With OME making the springs for Devon4x4 - what's the length and spring rate of the D44F/R springs compared with the stock springs? Is the OME N175 and N174 damper basically a Devon4x4 specific version of the OME N74 with an eye mounting on the top of the rear damper? What's the N75 damper? Relevant to Land Rovers? Would the D44 setup give a slightly lower spring rate and the N74 dampers being relatively stiff allowing good washboard road performance? My on road speeds are rarely more than 100 k but then majority of roads here are badly potholed tarmac or dirt roads with corrugation where the grader has passed and that's the end of the maintenance. Thanks for all the help - both on this thread and my others.
  11. Sorry to digress slightly, but would the LT 77 be okay with a 300Tdi or are the earlier ones viewed as being a bit on the weak side? And if okay, I guess the 300Tdi would mount to the LT77 with new engine mounts slightly rearwards? Thanks
  12. Greatly appreciate the information - got a lot of searching and reading of the forums ahead of me with this info
  13. I can source quite a few parts and there are a ton of old series 3 crew cabs here in Africa, plus fabrication is not much of an issue around these parts. I've just found a bit of a bargain tdi and my petrol 110 has some very 'african' safari hatches bolted into the roof when it use to serve as a Masaai Mara vehicle. They're made out of steel, so weigh the same as at least a good sized wheel on the roof. So I've got a CSW with a shocking roof and found a nice tdi csw with a good roof which I'd like to crew cab. I understand I'll end up with a slightly longer truck bed as well if I do this conversion. So I can probably get hold of a crew cab back and the roof to chop and section. Anyone managed to cut down the rear door and make a tidy, factory looking side opening rear tailgate?
  14. It's the four cylinder, fortunately with today's fuel prices...!
  15. I have a 110 petrol which I will hopefully be restoring soon. I am also getting hold of a 110 Tdi which will require a rebuild first. The petrol has a lot of play in it somewhere in the drivetrain. I've replaced the UJs, and want to know where to look next. Anybody able to post me some decent threads? I had a search, but I guess 'clunk' is a bit of a loose term... A-frame ball joint? What's the best axle and drive train parts for both the petrol and Tdi? (May as well be hung for a sheep than a lamb, right?!) I'm fortunate to live in an area where pretty much everything is salvaged, suffers little rust and there are a lot of government vehicles which seem to get rolled and written off, but apart from that little heavy use... Any advice, or pointing in the right direction would be very much appreciated. Finally, any pointers on identifying the axles used, gearbox and transfer box? The 110 petrol is an 89 model. I can post pictures if it would help? I have a Haynes, but it's the diesel model book. Once again, sorry if this is all new boy stuff. I was told by a gnarled old (38-40 is old round these parts!) mechanic that "England is for specification and Africa is for modification", so just a bit worried my ex-Masaai Mara 110 has had a bit to much of the local touch. Many thanks again, sorry if this is a boring topic - I hope one of you guys has a slow evening on your hands and a desire to impart so knowledge! Thanks!
  16. Hi all, I have found a reasonably good 300 Tdi 110 CSW with a cylinder head issue. All parts are present although the cylinder head is off the car. I want to convert it from a CSW to a crew cab or pickup, but understand the chassis outriggers are slightly different and the truck bed will end up slightly longer. Anyone converted a CSW to a crew cab or a truck cab? Any advice? Thanks all
  17. Can someone point me to a detail NA petrol to 200 tdi conversion thread? Been having a search and found a lot of td to tdi conversions... Off to the local yard to see what I can find. Thanks all
  18. I have a 110 SW 2.5 petrol. It is a bit sick at the moment, and requires the following: Uprated suspension as Armstrong units can't keep up with the African road system and daily off road commute. It needs a complete new wiring loom as it's a right old mess, new alternator, ideally I would like to ditch the heavy, scuffy welded steel hatches in the roof and fit a new roof, etc... I have a new chassis to start the rebuild with. I'm torn between keeping it stock and refurbishing everything, or going for a 300 TDi engine, truck cab rear and ditching the rear doors, full canvas tilt and external cab / internal rear roll cage. The cage and tilt could be fabricated locally. Ideas?
