  1. Pretty much yeah. For example is it worth changing injectors? I've heard the injector harness on TD5s can be a source of trouble as well etc so I'm wondering if there's anything I should do to guard against being stranded somewhere.
  2. Hi folks, my 90 TD5 has been with me since she had 70k on the clock and has now done 138k of fairly reliable motoring. I had a wee puff of blue smoke on startup the other day, nothing too concerning but made me wonder if there's something I should be doing to prevent any major breakdowns in the near future. So far I've gone with the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' method of maintenance but I'm not sure if that's viable any more. Where's the best place to start to make sure I don't end up on the side of the dual carriageway?
  3. That does look quite interesting...was it available to buy somewhere?
  4. In the end I opted to send my box to ICS Steering in Birmingham for a refurb. They quoted 5 days to turn it around but in the end it was more like 3 weeks. A nice bunch of people if not a bit chaotic and they forgot to send my steering arm back to me which was a bit of a pain. They've charged £160 + VAT for the service which comes with a 12 month warranty so still cheaper than a recon unit from the usual suppliers and at least it's still the original box which I like. Their website shows a video of the process and it looks like they deal with the shaft corrosion properly rather than just lump a new seal on there and hope for the best.
  5. Ideal, thanks folks! Turns out the pipe was bent (I think) so I've gone rogue with a 2lb hammer and coerced it back into a useable shape. Everything back together now after a horrid Saturday afternoon.
  6. It's this pipe that's got me stumped. I thought it might have been bent when I took the old box out but it's too difficult to bend so I don't think that's the case.
  7. Can someone post a pic of the top of their steering box on a 4 bolt, preferably TD5? I'm trying to refit my box today and the piping is making no sense to me at all. It's the piping that comes out the top of the box that's got me stumped. Cheers!
  8. Do you have to wire gauges/sensors like water temp/EGT etc via relays or would a simple fused 12v supply suffice?
  9. When you get round to changing the chassis it's a good idea to have your own thread on here. When I swapped my 90 chassis the advice I got from good on this forum was invaluable.
  10. Whereabouts are you based, @Cluaran. Happy to lend a hand with the chassis swap of you're nearby.
  11. I'd echo the sentiments above. Just think how much you're going to spend on gas, wire and steel which will only delay the inevitable. When you buy your new chassis and bolt everything on you'll likely kick yourself for not doing it sooner. It's a big undertaking but there's so much experience on here to draw from and I'm sure nearby folk will lend a hand if you get stuck.
  12. Good lord what is this monstrosity?!
  13. +1 for St Andrews, it's a properly nice little town with some great places to eat.
  14. I don't hear many good things about Dunecht 4x4 these days. They seem to be interested in sales with some pretty poor after sales. I've only dealt with Titch a couple of times but find him to be a genuine enthusiast with lots of good advice. I wouldn't hesitate to send folk his way.
  15. @Anderzanderapologies i'm late to the party! I am indeed based in Aberdeen so if you need any help at all then let me know.
  16. I know a wee wild camping spot just south of Lochinver, send me a message and I'll point you in the right direction. It's by a loch with some excellent brown trout and far from the maddening crowds.
  17. Is the bonnet touching the wings at the hinge end? You can adjust the height/reach of the bonnet my tilting the bulkhead but then this will misalign your doors so far from a quick fix I'm afraid.
  18. Great info! I have a 2016 RRS and a TD5 Def so was looking for a single box that would do most things. To be honest i just want it to clear codes on the RRS and keep an eye on things on the defender. ECU remapping is for magicians and clever people, not simpletons like me!
  19. How do the Nanocom systems compare to the various cheaper alternatives in here: https://www.diagnostic-world.com/pages/best_land_rover_obd2_diagnostic_scan_tools__2021_guide_273368.cfm ?
  20. I've been to the Falklands a few times and on each occasion ended up with a land cruiser as a rental vehicle. Whilst I was comfy, I felt like a fraud.
  21. The gold looks really good against the black modulars
  22. I tried to fit the Br*tpart ones and found it impossible. The swivel-axle bolts wouldn't fit after the gaitor was on and the rubber was too stiff to work with. A complete waste of time and money quite frankly.
  23. I think I saw VBH do a segment on fuel a few years ago and supermarket fuel didn't do too well. Just seen I can get a 2003 Range Rover with not too silly miles for £8k. Might have to sell the defender, buy a RR and pocket the change...
  24. Once I get the 1.2 transfer in there and sort a few niggles I think it'll be a fine commuting vehicle. I did 480 miles in it last month over to Campbeltown and it wasn't too bad at all. I'm doing a pick up conversion for winter and that should make it a quieter and less condensation-prone place to be. Should be easier to keep warm as well.
