  1. After some advice please concerning the V8 adapter plate to be used with a defender diesel LT77… I have a Discovery 3.9 V8 with a manual flywheel and a Phillips adapter ring. When I bolt up the adapter ring to the engine there is not much clearance between flywheel and the adapter. I was thinking of making a aluminium 3mm spacer to add clearance, has anyone had this issue? The other question I have concerns the clutch, the original fixing bolts are close to the adapter ring. Do I need to use a Defender TDI clutch and have the flywheel re-drilled? Any help greatly appreciate.
  2. Has anyone managed to retain the original series handbrake whilst using a LT77/L230 gearbox and transfer case? I would ideally like to keep the original handbrake in place. Any pics or advise would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Thanks both, I will be getting the tape measure out again this weekend and see what other problems I can come up against 😂.
  4. Thanks for the sound advice on the bulkhead. what type of exhaust manifolds are you using as there are lots or variants just to make it simple, do you have any pictures or part numbers? There are the P6, the Range Rover ones which are the 3.9 which exit centrally, the P38 which exit to the rear of the engine and a square looking one EER 2535 which exit towards the rear going for about £470........ yes £470 on a well known auction site.
  5. Hi, thanks for the advice. I am waiting for the adapter plate to turn up and see how it all fits together.......😬 As the engine mounts are longer on the drivers side i take it the engine has to be central to the chassis? will have a look at getting some exhaust parts, I still have some bits left from the Discover so will see if any of theses fit. thank you all again for the help.
  6. Thanks lo Thanks for that tip on the exhaust down pipes, I need to have a look on EBay. I did have a look on your build page to get some more ideas. I am going to go for an inch clearance at the front and fit a fan inside. The issue I have is that the car is just a chassis at the moment so am struggling to gauge what height to mount the engine and gearbox. I am planning to fabricate a new gearbox crossmember and move the middle crossmember to allow the handbrake drum to be removed. I spent best part of 4 hours faffing about with a tape measure moving the lot up, down, backwards and forwards and then decided to roll it back in the garage as I was just not sure where to mount the engine. I am going to fit a remote oil filter, had the same when I did my MGB GT.
  7. After some further advice I can use the adapter ring and the Defender gearbox but I need to have the flywheel re-drilled to take a 2.5 Tdi clutch, think I will have a few mm shaved of it too so it fits better. I then noticed that the input shaft on the Defender gearbox is larger than the V8 box and won’t fit the spigot bush so I have had to order an adapter ring for the end of the flywheel. 😡 Could any of you send me some pics on the engine mounts as I spent a few hours trying to figure where I need to position the engine with no joy. I have been using the standard radiator and seat box as a guide but am reluctant to do lots of welding on the mounts in case it’s in the wrong position. The good news is that the gearstick clears the seat box but the differential selector fouls so may need modification. All good fun 😅
  8. Thanks for that Fridge and Snagger, just sent them an email👍
  9. Thank you all for the info. I will keep an eye out for a second hand bellhousing and keep you updated. I am sure I will be back with more questions as I get the build underway😂
  10. Thanks for the response retroanaconda. I will have a look out for a bellhousing and see what I can source. Gutted I threw it out now but at least I kept the gearbox and transfer box. what is the difference in the seat boxes between the series and defender models?
  11. Thank you all for the advice so far. I have looked on eBay to get an idea of some of the bellhousing and gearbox options. SD1 P38 Not sure if these would fit as I want to keep the gearstick in the original position. The vehicle is just a chassis at the moment so can move the engine to suit but will want to keep the Series Front end.
  12. That’s why I thought I needed the adapter between the 4 cylinder defender gearbox and bellhousing. Sadly it fouls on the cluch and you can’t bolt it up.
  13. There seems to be various types of bellhousings for the v8. The Range Rover and Disco seem to have a longer one due to the input shaft and with what looks like ribs or strengthening on the case. Yours looks like what I had fitted in my MGB which came off an SD1 and Lt77. Can I just fit one of the SD1 or are the defender ones different to the RR and disco.? As you can see I am somewhat confused and no your not teaching me to suck eggs. 😂
  14. Hi Snagger, i bought a second hand Series 1 Disco for the engine which was a manual 3.9. I read that you could not use it’s LT77 as the remote comes up in the seat box as this is towards the rear of the gearbox. This is why I then bought a second hand defender gearbox as the remote is forwards and they have a shorter input shaft. I have still got the Discovery LT 77 but threw away the bellhousing as it looked to be too long. These are the pictures of the defender gearbox with the remote being forward.
  15. Thanks for the response Fridgefreezer. I thought I had to use an adapter plate to use the defender Lt77 great box with its short bellhousing. It may have been designed for the original series gear box. Do I need to ditch the adapter plate and use a specific v8 bellhousing? Discovered that the discovery LT77 has a longer input shaft which would lead the gear selector to come up in the seat box. I would like to keep the gear lever in its original position. Have to to say the gearbox for the conversation has been a bit of a minefield.
  16. Hi, New to the forum. I am after some advice on fitting a Rover V8 with a Lt77 into a series 2a SWB. i have purchased a second hand 2.5 Defender gearbox to mate up to Philips adapter and then onto the engine however the flywheel clutch bolts are too close to enable the gearbox to bolt on. The flywheel bolts are very close to the adapter ring and will not allow the LT77 to bolt on. Am I using the wrong set up? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
