Hi all,
I have recently replaced timing belt on my 1998 300tdi defender.
I replaced belt, tensioner, idler pulley and crankshaft gear. Followed instructions according to enlosed pictures. Doublechecked against factory workshop manual and even the Haynes manual. 🙂 FIP and flywheel locked at TDC with no problems. After new belt was fitted and tensioned, I rotated crankshaft two turns to TDC, locked FIP and flywheel and tensioned timing belt again to 11 Nm. Did it one more extra time just to be shure. Then mounted front cover with new gasket, refitted crank pulley and mounted new drivebelt.
Then I tried to start it up for a few seconds. No luck... Drive belt moved 4-5 inches but nothing more. It sounded and felt like the engine didn´t had enough power to start. Just as if you were trying to start in very, very cold conditions.
Did the whole procedure again and double checked everything was aligned and locked at TDC. No problems. Reassembled everything again up to drive belt and tried to start. No luck this time either. Now there is a rattling sound (machinegun-like) when i try to start. Nothing moves, not even the drive belt.
I cannot figure out what is wrong. It feels like I´ve missed something obvious. Any of you guys out there have an idea what might be wrong? Have you ever had the starting problems I describe above?
Thank´s in advance!
