  1. I was reminded why I don't like TD5's on Saturday. One of the set up crew got stuck in a very deep water hole, in his 110. flooded the seat box and drowned the ecu's. We dried everything out. Eventually. But it would only run for a 30 seconds or so, then die. Cleaned all the relays out as I couldn't remember which one was the fuel pump. Still wouldn't run. Checked everything again. Still wouldn't run. Gave up in the end and yellow taxi to Scotland. I pulled a 10 tonner MAN truck through the same water hole, later in the day, (although it was with a Yankum rope) no issues
  2. When I bought the Disco, it had a 'funny' clutch, just never right. After about 30k I decided to swap it out. Clutch plate was in backwards. According to the service history, this was the original factory clutch. I also discovered the interesting little snail cam adjuster on the pedal, at the same time. I fit Valeo/Borg and Beck clutches. There's very little difference between any of the vehicles type of 'HD' versions
  3. Saxon Express was, as usual. brilliant. The the whole training are was like porridge with grinding paste mixed in, so hard going for all. There were a few fairly major stucks, but it all went well
  4. Mike (Tomcat), James and I have recently been trying to fix a Fiesta 1.0ltr three cylinder lump. Non Turbo. I think it's an EcoBoost. The original lump had put the number three rod through the block at 115k. It sounded bad before it happened. Turns out the 120k service includes oil pump change and big end replacement. The perfect example of modern design for minimum life expectancy
  5. Looking in all the usual places. there are so many TD5's for sale, for sub 400 quid, a fair few complete vehicles for the same. A few 300 Disco's, loads of M57's, PD130, Audi V6 and one OM606. Also about 5/6 200Tdi's between 450 and 1k
  6. I've now had 12 200Tdi's since 1990/91. Only 1 has had cam creep. I've blown two head gaskets, almost needed one turbo and had some annoyance with a vacuum pump. Total mileage over 34 years is approx 700,000 miles, with some doing more, some doing less. I can happily say that the 200Tdi is the most reliable engine I've ever owned
  7. It's possible for a seal to blow and simply bypass the fluid back into the system
  8. Sounds like a slave cylinder Borrow Fridge's borescope and have a look at the interior of the bell housing Just remember if it's the slave then everything else will need changing. Did you remove the clutch damper when you fitted the drive train - if not, I'd check that first
  9. This is for a bulk buy for all the machines down at the farm. One of which is supposed to be OAT but with a 500 hour change (whereas OAT says 5 years on the drum) Really just wanted to get Glycol and change everything out as and when
  10. Glycol, OAT and Universal, what are the differences and is it true you can't swap OAT for Glycol?
  11. I'll take the Ibex off your hands for 500 notes, call it a favour
  12. Why make new, when you can take someone else's design and improve on it. I have no real interest in new cars. I've bought 2 brand new vehicles in my life ( a VW Polo in 1989 and a Bedford Brava in 1989) both to offset tax. I'll never do it again. But I'm a big fan of stuff the Foreign chaps made from reverse engineering, then made better. Such as the Datsun/Nissan straight six (Triumph) or the gorgeous Nissan in line five two stroke diesel (Gardener). The far est will produce whatever is asked of them, to the quality we are willing to pay for. Many things, including cars are made from internationally sourced parts, that Made in the UK or Made in Murica are really 'Assembled in..." Not going to talk about EV's
  13. Worth a look....and worth looking at the engine bores as well
  14. Or you could use an Ashcroft conversion plat to keep the series T box
  15. Does it smoke on the overrun or all the time? It's more likely to be the valve stem seals than the bores/rings
  16. Next Saturday, on the 15th of March. Saxon Express again, still at Bovington "I won't be at Leconfield, but I hoping to make Mudmaster and will definitely be at Magnum Spirit" in the end I didn't make either, thanks to my old friend Sepsis. Just thankful to hopefully be there this time.
  17. Unless you know the engine, you'll be jumping out of the frying pan, straight into the fire. Well maintained, loved and cherished TD5's are a wonderful thing. Old, abused, poorly maintained and un cared for TD5's are simply a good way to spend money and increase stress You mentioned earlier on this page, just how good the original lump was, until it got cam creep. You could remove the cam, fit new white metal bearings (and locktite them in place) and replace the cam, in a comfortable day, with tea and biscuits. With time to spare to look at the bottom end and clean the oil pump. If by some strange reason, the bearing holes are mullered (rare, but can happen), you are part of the way to getting it line bored. 200Tdi's are old, some parts aren't as easy to get hold of as they were. But a rebuild will (as mentioned by Brother Fridge) last you 20 years. By which time you won't have the option of driving anything except your bike. As an aside, in 20 years (which is about as long as I've known you) I will be 78, confined to a very stinky armchair and mumbling about the good old days.
  18. Use the flat file that you would reduce the guides on a chainsaw chain. These old circular saws of death are meant to filed to any flat file you can get in there is good
  19. I did have a long convo with Uncle Nige the other night... I've a list as long as yer arm of little things to do, as well as a rear hub oil seal, some windscreen wiper investigations But with the G wagen falling through and my house sale falling through and I've got most of my tools in storage, so I'm just muddling through. And my back up mechanic has just become a dad, on the 29th of Feb
  20. This was my understanding and that this would be the last year of use as the AWDC hadn't pre-booked further than the end of 2024 However I've also been told that things may change
