  1. Lamb Leer is the site at W.Harptree. It's been used for motor sport since before WW2. It's named after a gert big cave system that runs underneath The infamous MaxiTrial - that sadly never took on. Even driven by a Volvo BV202. The chap you are thinking of was Selwyn Kendrick, who sadly passed away a few years back. I ran events there (mainly for J33P) from 2002 to 2010.
  2. The 'God Given Right' mob are particularly stubborn in the UK. I would ban any tyre over 35" in diameter and 10.5" in width. Personally I feel that loud exhausts save lives, but I loathe the noise of popcorn limiters and find rolling coal to be absurd; however an Alpha Romeo 3.0V6 with four cams and many valves, hitting 10k rpm is as the song of the nightingale to my ears Rule of Three 1st attempt. Fail. Back off and re-assess 2nd attempt. Fail. Back of and re-assess 3rd attempt. Fail. Back of and b*gg*r off Side note: excess torque has overcome available traction, so hitting the rev limiter will not get you any further. Funnily enough, in 99% of cases, the land will recover, if left alone. It doesn't take long and generally increases the bio diversity. Seven sisters wasn't planted for biodiversity when it was reclaimed. That wasn't the popular watchword back then. It was planted for timber. The planting design originated the Forestry Commission Now Forestry England. It's what is known as a 12 species landscape, with few nurse species and lots of carpy timber species, the predominant one being Larch, both Japanese and European. Both very susceptible to Phytophthora ramorum, which has wiped out 3/4 of the larch in the UK. As nature is want to do, many other native and ruderal naturalised species have found there way in. It's become quite interesting for people like me.
  3. If the ford was marked as closed then insurance will be null and void anyway
  4. What would the consensus be on having set tyre size and type rules, noise rules, speed limits etc as well as things like 'the rule of three'?
  5. Camping as in a field or Camping as in a field with toilets
  6. In my comment about sites on the Mendips, I mentioned typical quarry sites. Is there a requirement for other types of site? For example, tomorrow night will be freezing my balls off in a large section of woodland on the Devon/Somerset border, on the edge of the Blackdown Hills. Typical of those hills, it's sand, mixed with organics, over a layer of Chert, over a layer of running green sand. There are roadways through the site, but as long as no one hits the trees, it's a general free for all. The terrain is steep and undulating - used for the odd trial and the occasional challenge event. I'm seeing the land owner tomorrow afternoon... What about distance? Is Cornwall to far (and too full of odd people). The old P&P site at Thunder Bay hasn't been used in years and the land owner wouldn't mind a small income. Military sites are simply too busy most of the year, but Bovington is free on a regular basis. Although it would depend on which part.
  7. They were good days. You've hit the nail on the head there, Les. We all know a P&P vehicle doesn't need big tyres, as it simply takes the fun (and skill) away. Tyre control sizes in competition would have a ripple effect across the popcorn limiter boys There was an event up at Seven Sisters/Banwen last weekend. It was a play day. No idea who organised it but it looked pretty good. Most of the vehicles were D3/D4 and L322.
  8. Only thing NRW (Natural Resources Wales) will be interested in, will be water run off. I would have fenced off the Pond at the bottom of the stepped drain (near the washing Machine) years ago. It's a sedimentation pond that exits in the local water courses. There's another one over by what was 'Hidden Valley' but that has a natural bog at the run off end, then runs into the two lower lakes. There's also another run off on the eastern boundary, but that is mainly off site Why don't Shire talk to the owner of Binegar. There are a number of quarries in that area, suitable to trash to your hearts content. There's one at Vobster, which I believe is just sitting doing sod all and isn't flooded. There's one at Leigh upon Mendip. Taunton 4x4 Club (for popcorn limiters) use another site near Vobster. You might even be able to talk the Burge family into letting you use Lamb Leer at West Harptree. The other option is to talk to quarrying companies. Every site that closes to extraction is still the owners liability. That's not cheap. You might have to re-write your RAMS and maybe run some internal refresher courses, but it's always a possibility
  9. Coroner will probably state 'Death by misadventure'. Even if police find that the vehicle was a death trap, there's no-one to point the finger at to be punished
  10. The site belongs to a subsidiary of Walters Mining. They have more big plant than you can shake a stick at. When Walters bought the site, they had a local chap who would oversee the events and there were lots of limitations about what/where/why/when. Then a Challenge was held up there. More money than a pay and play was put into sweaty hands. That one challenge changed the site, trashing certain areas so they were unusable. Greed took over and Rally GB wasn't the only even. Unnecessary super big aggressive tyres became the norm. Large numbers of vehicles on specific areas. High speed driving, with USBA tyres. During this time, the chap who 'kept an eye' got ill and died. Nobody manages the site. No remedial works are done after competitions - to a site that is all reclaimed from a big hole in the ground, simply refilled with loose rock/spoil. I stopped running events up there solely because it was being used for Challenge events and it was making marshalling so much more difficult
  11. I no longer use hooks, but when I did, I tried all sorts of hook muffles, like an old trainer, woolly hat etc. Using the washing machine was my job anyway, so no issue with SWINMEW
  12. To be honest I was expecting this years ago. The site has been trashed, but mostly by competitions. Back in the 90's, I was involved in a large chunk of the land reclamation on the site. As such it's an old friend. It won't take long for the site to recover, but the yoghurt knitters will whinge about loss of habitat and such like. All the while the TPL on the site will go up and up
  13. Don't use a detergent. The Dishwasher drying cycle will be too hot, unless you have a 25/30 degree setting. Put the hook in a couple of pars of socks, then put the whole thing in a pillow case and wash in a washing machine on a cold wash
  14. Take out mortgage, move house, do some stuff to the house, continue rolling re-build on Disco, live with lady friend, chill out after a particularly carp few years, hopefully buy Austin 7
  15. We do floods round here - mainly because 'around here' was an inland sea. Back in 2014, when 65 square miles was flooded to a depth of up to 11', I experienced being pushed sideways in my 110 by water less than 18" deep. Simply because of the tarmac surface underneath and the length of the crossing (approx 1 mile). The flow wasn't crazy. You could stand up in it easily, proved by me walking the crossing before driving (it had culverts in the road and if they get damaged, it gets nasty). Yet I have crossed rivers, in foreign places, where I have had the water up the base of the windscreen (needs must when the Devil wees in your teapot). It's down to what the vehicle is driving on, under the water. In this case, it appears the vehicle wasn't just pushed over, but once on it's side, was swept downstream a reasonable distance, to end up in a pool of water deeper than the width of the vehicle. That's some force of water!
  16. On the internet. https://www.4x4works.co.uk/product/koni-heavy-track-raid-dampers-land-rover-discovery-series-1-1989-94-adjustable-shock-absorbers-front-rear-pair-set-of-4-twin-tube/?attribute_quantity=Front+Pair&utm_source=Google Shopping&utm_campaign=4x4Works UK&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=162884&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIs9WcuOvAgwMVQZxQBh0-kAmKEAQYAiABEgKsAfD_BwE
  17. If fitted to a vehicle that's much lardier than the LGT, then it might work reasonably...hmmm
  18. Sadly not, the model change from Jay to Romulus was 1994. The Romulus has the Rover 800 dash so pretty much everything is different
  19. So do the TF adjustable shocks actually adjust?
  20. There were a lot of articles on social media. Had to stop reading them after a short while
  21. The gutter press have managed to make it sound as if all 4x4 drivers are to blame. I thought the death of that wee lassie on Strata Florida, a few years back, would reduce the stupidity, but it didn't. Now three blokes are dead, possibly three families mourning.
  22. Thank you Mike. Now I'm really confused.... I may need a grown up
  23. That's a really good price though. Cheap enough to replace as a service item in a few years
  24. Does anyone have a link to a Disco 200 tdi loom schematic? I'm struggling to find one
