  1. CREEPY I've added pretty much the same thread on another forum this morning. Just had a trip to Mole Valley Farms in Frome to get some bolts.
  2. Would love to mate but have a birthday in Wales on the Saturday and planning on doing a BIG service on Sunday on the Disco.
  3. Just had the lift pump problem on mine, pulled up at the breadknives sisters house to hear something like a tap running, it was diesel pouring onto the road, it got fixed by unscrewing the feed from the fuel tank and the output to the fuel filter and connecting them together with a short peice of hose and some jubilee clips. Works a treat but then I heard the ticking noise. Covered the out put on the fuel lift pump with my finger and the noise went away. Brand new lift pump only set me back £18, but I need the bolts off the old pump and some olives to fit on the new lift pump pipes so I can hook it all up again. While we are on this, can someone confirm to me that on the fuel lift pump the bottom hose is the feed from the fuel tank and the top hose is the output to the fuel filter?? Ta
  4. Looking at an OS map 1:25k I can drive on the byways which are indicated by the lines of green crosses (or red crosses if on 1:50k map) Having looked at the Land Rover Owner insert from the other month 'UK's 20 best Greenlanes' some of them seem not to be on the byways but on routes marked with red dots or diamonds. Does this mean they are byways also? Just don't want to be going down the wrong paths, so exactley which can I be driving and also, if I planned a route and took a mate with another car, how can I check before hand to see if these routes are ok to drive on or if they have TRO's on them? Cheers
  5. Don't know mate, I'm thinking of the same. I replaced the standard speakers in front and back (only four speakers) with some 5.25" decent Alipnes. Sounds alright in the back I'm presuming because of A; The space they have and B: They are at ear height in the back. Sounds not great in the front as even though they are decent speakers they are still down at knee height. Best bet is to get some 6.5" comonents and try to angle them to point more in to the cabin. Got too many jobs that I want to do so I think I won't be finishing this for a while myself ; (
  6. Now THAT sounds interesting. Give us a shout if you need/want a spare pair of hands mate. Have some tools and a willingness to help out (or point and laugh)
  7. Hmm, North Bristol eh? Not far away really but NOOOOOO.. Thanks for the offer though ha haaaa. But if you get stuck and need a hand send me a PM. I've got a hand winch now you know ; )
  8. Thanks for all the replies. I got it completley wrong, it was a 1600kg Tirfor with rope, and I picked it up today. I'm out tomorrow so I am going to kindly request that someone (other than me) get stuck so I can come to their rescue and try it out. Yesterday I had a problem, pulled up at her indoors' sisters to hear a noise like running water, turns out it was diesel pouring out of the engine bay  Couldn't have happened at a better place, her brother in law works on and pretty much knows everything about Land Rovers (but he doesn't like diesels). Anyway, he had a look and founf that the fuel lift pump was shot, when I turned the engine over fuel was shooting out of the lower union. He recons that things like this start off with a trickle then degrade to a point where they judt give way. Could explain me getting 100miles less on the last tank, I just thought it might be something to do with being off road, all that stopping and starting and revving.. Anyway, one field fix later and I was on my way home. Spent £160 today, got the Tirfor, 2x Diff guards, 2x recovery points which include jacking points a sepentine belt and a replacment lift pump (which unfortunatley turned out to be duff, but the fella said no problem and he'll give us the cash back for it). Good day all in all I think
  9. Cheers guys... Yeah. I'm pretty much a tool. I looked on that site earlier but somehow couldn't find them.. DUH!!! Spoke to someone else and found they are quite expensive. One fella asked why I was looking at the biggun if I only have a Disco. He recons the 1600kg one would pull the Disco easily (the weight rating is for lifting so you can increase that for pulling, he rates the 1600kg will pull 2500kg) It's just that for (I think it was..) £100 I could get a second hand 3200kg one from a trusted person but it has no rope. But you never know with second hand do you, I don't know if the gears or the grips are all ok on the inside, and to send it off for testing means about £80+ just for the labour to check it out.. For £200 I could get a brand new Tirfor copy rated at 1600kg WITH 20m of rope. Oh yeah, 30m, WHAT WAS I THINKING?? 10m is long, 20m is more than I need. So what do you guys think? Brand new but lower rated OR the second hand biggun and rope for the same price? OH I KNOW. I did it the other week, it was my first introduction to the hand winch, and I hardly did any of the work ha haa Cheers mate, just near Bristol but thanks for the offer pal, much appreciated
  10. I have the opportunity to buy a Tirfor handwinch, the biggun 3200kg. BUT I need to buy a rope for it. Anyone know where I can get one? 20m or 30m but be great. I have googled but all I find is either brand new winches, places that say wire available but no listing for them or tool/equipment hire places. I have searched for 16.3mm wire rope but everything I find says "not suitable for Tirfor" Can anyone help?
  11. Bad connection on the back of the alternator?? I went through a mud trap on the weekend and following that had exactly the same symtoms. Pulled over, the whole engine and engine bay including the underneath of the bonnet was gipping with mud, I let it dry out all hunky dorey again. So I'm guessing maybe just check the rev couter connection at the back?? of the alternator and any earth connections, also heard of these being dodgy
  12. It was cool. If it was right muddy I can see how you'd get stuck. I'm the first to back out of trying something, I'm paranoid of getting stuck while out on your own... But I'd love to go back there with someone else, a tow rope and maybe a winch ; ) I'd have had a go at the other bits, they looked REALLY bad like you'd just get stuck halfway in...
  13. Just been for a little drive with the missus, last minute we decided to take the dogs for a walk somewhere different, the breadknife suggested Salisbury plains. COOL. Off we went drove the big stoned roads then noticed the by-way signs and went off down a few, pulled over and walked any bits we were unsure of before doing them as we were on our own. My first time there and I loved it. Can't wait to go with poeple who know it well and know which are the permissable places to go. Dogs enjoyed it.. After the first puddle I did the macarena as you can see Dogs still loving it Bit futher down the by way was a bigger puddle, but had to go around that as a major getting stuck risk arose, so went around that and went through a smaller water trap Pulled over to let the dogs out and have a bickkie The handbrake started slipping so we had to stop it rolling down the slope... It was real hard, it's a heavy car.. Of course SHE's had her weetabix this morning... In action The next water trap She went wading Finished off with a rather bumping lane Then walk the dogs and off home. Cracking day
  14. Alright, we were following, our mate was reccying some new routes and we tagged along.
  15. Doing a bit of work to put in a full length false floor (watch this space) and noticed that behind the dickie seat on the drivers side there are two vents one on top of the other. The flap moves easily with your finger but no effect with the fans on Any idea what these vents are??? Also, see the bunch of wires nearest the vents. That exits through the floor and goes to the 12n socket in the tow bar. Two of the cables are taped off and seperated from this bunch (the two with red caps on the end that look like LEDs), using a 12v flourescent light with crocodile clips I have established that these are a permanent feed from the battery and bypass the ignition (as you would find in a 12s socket). I'm thinking of using these to power a twin or triple cigarette socket in the floor/drawers/cabinet I'm building. Can anyone see a problem with this? It would allow me to use the socket for things like 12v inflatable pump for matress and so on when camping. Going to wire another 12v flourescent light into the boot light to provide more light when the door is opened.
  16. I wouldn't mind getting in on this myself. Only been off road twice so far so a nice bimble over the plains would be cool
  17. We went out on Thursday from Barnstaple over to Taunton on Greenlanes. It was AMAZING, I can't believe what these vehicles can do. Started off on a very steep decline, tight lanes and trees smaking off the car, the next lane was the same but going up hill on a very steep slope over stone and slate, the third lane was a problem and we got stuck, but 2 hours later and lots of effort using a hand winch got us on our way... And then some more, it was FANTASTIC.. That is a STEEP slope, my Disco is WAAAY higher than the the 90 Big descent This photo was taken perfectly level, you can see how steep it is, we just came down that, and also the difference in height between the left and right side of the track The 90 we were with On the way up.... We got stuck and I had to get out.... Unfortunatley the lane was a bit narrow here... And I had to get out through the window.. No.. Really... Here's where we were stuck We got over it and had the same problem with the rear, even with a 90 pulling us we had to give up and do some digging and get the hand winch out We got wedged against the lane wall This might make more sense A few more battle scars on the Disco now Get the winch out again.!!!! DIIIIIRTY car
  18. I'm with Adrian Flux, it was all explained to me and had the paperwork through so signed and sent off. Also covered for greenlaning too ; ) I have no idea if this a standard on 4x4 insurance
  19. Hi guys, I have seen a few threads about removing the clock in a Disco 1 but never with pics, and these still leave people confused. I'm not sure if I have seen them on this forum or another so I'll post it anyway and hopefully it will be usefull to someone. It would be nice to know if this is the same for a Disco 2 (before and after facelift, the only LandRover I have been in is my Disco and a new 90 I took for a very short test drive because I felt like it) It's sooo easy and all you need is a credit type card, to be honest, it's much easier with two and preferably a smooth card with no embossed numbers.. 1. Here is your dash, see the clock on one side and the coin tray in the other, it's the same to remove these on both sides 2. Just for your info and to make these easier so you know what you are aiming for, these are the tabs you are trying to displace to allow you to remove the clock. There are two on the bottom and two in the same position at the top 3. Insert the first card, corner first underneath the clock. Keep pushing and feel around to make sure you push out the clip 4. Now straighten the card out and push further in so it is square 5. Repeat at the top 6. Slide left and right (or even put the card in longways to ensure both clips have been pushed) 7. Now all the clips have been released pull both the cards and the clock should slide out Sorted
  20. I forgot to update. I ordered a 12s socket and plug and 2x 12v 8watt flour lights. We have a set up like this at mum and dads caravan (not a posh site with electrickery) and it's a 12(whatever) plug on crocodile clips straight to the battery, then plug the socket from the caravan into it under the bonnet can run those lights all night and the car starts in the morning. Anyway, I had a spare 12v motorbike battery lying around so I connected my trickle charger to it as it has a meter on to show has charged or discharged it is(but didn't plug it in) then clipped both lights to it. Six hours later still got the lights on and the battery has not run down at all.. I'll just take the bike battery and have that in the tent, then I don't have to mess arounf with plugging it into the car in anyway. Still looking forward to having a second battery set up later in the year. Cheers
