  1. I'm afraid i don't have a clever answer as it continued to baffle me no matter how much i studied it. In the end i fabricated my own very thick shim and then used standard shims to get the right degree of pressure. It was a very strange thing, but as wrong as it was, my steering is still working perfectly...!
  2. Oh dear, the new seals i bought do not fit.. Perhaps the old seals being double lipped indicated that the hubs are from a series 3 and maybe late series 2's could have had later hubs fitted..? I'll have to get the specs of the RTC3511 and see if they fit. Hey ho.
  3. That's good info. All that is stamped on the ones i have removed is 315-236-15-DR but as the RTC3511's are so cheap i'm tempted to buy a pair and measure them up.

  5. Well, it was after all a double lipped seal, how odd, i'd just never come across one before.. Thanks for all the advice!
  6. Just a random thought... How do you press a double lipped seal in without distorting the lip??
  7. Only just worked out what the 'land' is....! I'll find out soon when i clean everything up and study it all closely.
  8. That seems to make sense and might be why i'm getting conflicting answers - i've never come across a double lipped seal. I need to get the seal out and have a look at it to verify - the replacement seals are single lipped anyway so i guess will have to be fitted as described.

  10. The replacement seals are pretty standard with a lipped side and a flat side, so i'm still guessing the flat side should face me.....??

  12. Hi to all you knowledgable landy owners out there - please can someone tell me whether or not the seal in the attached pic is the right way round? It is on the rear hub off a series 2A LWB and this is how the seal came off the vehicle. I'm having to renew it thanks to it leaking and here's my confusion: every seal i have fitted has always been lipped side facing away from you and towards the bearing, and yet this one is the opposite. Have i got it wrong or has a previous owner got it wrong, the manuals are as clear as mud? Thanks.
  13. In case anyone stumbles across this thread looking for advice, here is some: DO NOT buy unbranded u bolts when re attaching the springs. I did, and the threads stripped at less than 40lbs of torque so i'm now waiting on a branded set which will hopefully be much better quality. Buy cheap, buy twice (and have to do the job twice)..
  14. Thanks guys, i'd guessed it wrong so it was worth checking. Incidentally, i'm pretty sure nearside always refers to the side you mount a horse, from a time way before vehicles.... Wish i was in Seattle, not Settle mind.
  15. Hi all - i've just come to fit new rear leaf springs to my 1968 series 2A. When i bought the landy it came with two new Bearmach leaf springs so i've just grabbed one and it says "rear left leaf spring". Well that's a fat lot of use when i don't know if i'm meant to stand at the front of the vehicle or at the rear of the vehicle to determine which is rear left....! Saying nearside or passenger side etc. would have been much more helpful. Please can someone tell me which side "rear left" is before i make a big mistake! Thanks, Phil.
