  1. Hi Folks,

Just awaiting my V plate 5door 1.8 (yes it has had the new head gasket, timing belt, water pump, full exhaust inc CAT).

    Just a couple of questions....

Should I be able to fold the door mirrors flat'ish or do they just stick out all the time. One has had a bad knock and will require replacing (reflected in price paid), if the originals are fixed, are there any different ones available that fold flat (live on a narrow street, even lost a mirror on my previous 90 (3.5 V8... Ahh ! ))

Is the radio in the Freelander standard ISO fitting, just a tape jobby at mo' , will need my CD/MP3 ...

What should I expect MPG wise from the 1.8, I know its pullling around a big body with the 5 door. It's not going to get thrashed, I use my Berlingo HDi for that

Right that will do for now, just got to wait until Thursday to pick it up.

Will then post as thing fall off or break !!!!

    Phil..

At that age the mirros didn't fold, but the later folding mirrors can be fitted with a small mod.

    Yes, standard ISO fitting.

    Can't answer, as I had a diesel.

Now join the Freelander club and get out and get it MUDDY!!

  2. It appears that the head problem can affect any 1.8 engine, but in general it is much worse on vehicles that only do short journeys, and therefore never get truly hot.

    Hope that helps.

  3. If you join any forum you will always only hear the bad things and not the many thousands of happy freelander drivers.

People don't post "my cars grate it never lets me down" so it makes things look worse than they really are.

All cars are very much the same...

Land Rover's like to give there owners something to do at the week ends ;)

My car's great, it never lets me down...........

but it did get stuck yesterday..............

ruts deep enough for the 90 in front of me to drag it's rear diff on the floor really are to deep for a Freelander!

However in general it is brillaint and only now at 90k hard misused miles is it starting to make some funny noises, and yes I will buy another one!!

  4. How and what is the cheapest way of going about getting a spare keyfob for a freelander?

Noticed these are for sale on ebay but surely they are all programmed differently

You have to take it to either an LR dealer or someone with the right computer link to get it programmed.

  5. Hi Les. I'm new on this site but wondered if you could help me? The thing is. I need to put longer wheel studs into my hubs so that I can put new wheels on. The wheel studs are 13.1mm at the spline and I've drilled the holes in the hub out to 13mm. When I put the studs into the hub and put the wheel on. The studs then turns when I start to tighten it up and then pops out the back of the hub. I've tried this with 3 different hubs now and am at my wits end! The question that I would like to ask you is. Is it ok to have the studs welded onto the hub using a MIG welder? I won't be doing it, I shall have it done properly.

    What do you think?

    Thanks for your help Les,

    Dean.

    Dean,

What are you trying to fit, different LR wheels, or some aftermarket types?

    Are you fitting spacers?

The hubs are designed to take a certain stud and any modification could lead to serious and dangerous problems?

  6. A friend of mine is after a bit of info on replacing the vcu unit which apparently comes complete with the bearings and carriers at each end. We noticed the fixing holes for the carriers are slotted which made us think maybe the bearing carriers need to be centralised in some way to avoid propshaft vibration due to it being mis-aligned.

Is there a knack to making sure everything is lined up?

Bearings should be at 90 degrees to the centre line of the VCU.

Haynes show using a large set square to check.

  7. Never owned or driven a 4x4 before so excuse me if the answer to this is obvious.

What does the transfer box do on a freelander? I'm guessing its something to do with the four wheel drive.

Can someone explain the principle please. Also is the four wheel drive selected from stationary or can it be engaged whilst the vehicle is moving?

Early days for me and I'm doing my homework to see what I'm about to let myself in for.

The Freelander is PERMANENT four wheel drive and therefore not selectable.

Technically the Freelander does not have a transfer box but an Intermediate Reduction Drive, that reduces the drive from the gearbox and "splits" the drive to front and back axles.

  8. The continuation of the Claerwen Dam track after the County boundary/ford/bridge is NOT a Right of Way. It is not marked on any maps or currently by Powys CC, however there is the possibility of some negotiations with the Elan Trust and Ceredigion CC in the near future.

Re the track back down the Valley from the Dam, have you checked with Powys CC about an upgrade? Looks good if it has been done.

  9. Yep, it's a Freelander thing!!

To get it partly down, press and hold until you want it to stop. You can only do this once each movement.

To get it totally down, press VERY quickly or just hold it down all the way.

    And then of course......

    ........

    ........

    ........

    ........

    ........

    the bloody cable will break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. I have recently replaced both bearings on mine, and they only needed tapping with a normal hammer.

I presume you have got the joints off?

I found that I needed to tap the very bottom of the bearings, close to the shaft, with a hammer and a blunt cold chisel, moving around the bearing. They were tight at first, but soon "let go"

There have been reports that some have had to use a hydraulic press to remove them, though.

  11. Have a friend with a 02 year TD4 Auto!!

He's up for a tyre change, and would like to have some with a bit more grip for very mild offroad etc, but still being used for 90% road work

Currently has standard fit ?? Goodyear 215/65x16 Wranglers , , has anyone used anything with a bit more All terrain about them,

    Thanks Guys

Have a look at the MAD Freelanders Club forum (http://www.mad-freelanders.org.uk/forum/default.asp)

There is always a discussion on tyres going on somehwere there.

  12. Colvert

Due to a problem with the VCU support bearings on mine I have just removed the whole propshaft, from the IRD to the rear axle. Car still drives perfectly!!

Several in the Freelander Club have done this when their VCU's started playing up.

  13. So good infact that we later rebooked and went from Aberystwyth over Plynlimon for our second day out. Again it was really enjoyable.

    Nathan

Interesting reading that, as there are NO vehicular rights of way over Plynlimon!
