  1. Hi Todd, I've got the same problem, did you find a solution?
  2. Jase, Me and a few others are heading to Salisbury plain tomorrow if you fancy it let me know
  3. Hello all, I'm looking to organise a weekend laning/camping but want to spend as little time as possible on tarmac. I'm looking for a 2/3 night route possibly in Wales or Devon/Cornwall (but am open to suggestions bearing in mind I live in west sussex) where I can join a route off the tarmac on day 1 and stay off the tarmac until I drive home. My initial thoughts were; Brecon Beacons Snowdonia Exmore Dartmore Has anyone done anything like this before and suggest some routes?? I'm not particularly looking to get muddy or stuck and will be looking to go in May probably. Cheers
  4. or, since it is your land and the PROW is a footpath, you could invite 100 of your closest land rover driving friends to use the track on a daily basis churning it up so much that it becomes unwalkable, its your land right so even though the ROW is a footpath you and authorised people are allowed to drive it, man you could really go to town with big mud holes, ruts sloppy mud everywhere, not a dry patch in site.....
  5. You could always apply for a TRO on the path claiming that walkers/cyclists in large groups are tearing it to bits with their aggressive shoe tread patterns irresponsibly using the path after it has been raining etc etc etc
  6. Thats all well and good, but treating people like naughty school children is not the way to do it. With all due respect, I dont know who the hell you or anyone else is, so if you start barking at me like a grumpy old headmaster I will just get annoyed and miss your point completely. By ranting and raving at entheusiatic people in the forums you are not doing your hobby any good at all. yes you may feel strongly about what you are saying but all you do is end up alienating yourself and anyone agrees with you just because of the tone you use the first time someone comes in contact with you. By doing this, if I were the chastisee in this case I would most likely respectfully ignore any further comments and carry on regardless (seeing as its not breaking any rules or laws) or simply leave this forum and go and find a friendlier one out of the thousands available. I guess my point in all of this (being devils advocate) you all should be careful how you talk to people otherwise you will end up doing more harm than good. As for green lanes well my personal view is that unfortunate as it is the day of us being able to use them are numbered so I will continue to use them while I can. If there are restrictions or TRO's I will leave them be. If I see other people I will be considerate and polite (more that can be said for most ramblers and horse riders I have come across in my time), I will not damage the surrounding land tor wildlife. As green lanes are roads after all, shouldn't their maintenance be covered by our road fund license, are campaigners missing a trick here, shouldn't horse riders have to buy a bridleway license to help fund the maintenance of their dedicated rights of way? Just out of interest, can someone post a picture of a lane damaged to the point where it is impassable by foot/cycle/horse
  7. Even so, the point is moot really, making the lanes illegal will only ever stop the responsible people who respect them, the chavs out there will do whatever the hell they want to do. Chastising people for linking to byways is still wrong, and drives people away from forums like this where people come to learn and find out more about what we enjoy doing. If you take the fun out of it you push these people in the direction of the people who make spoiling it for everyone else look like fun. Feel free to share your views but not to inflict them on people, in the end you're only right in your own opinion.
  8. Hmm this is a much much debated topic isn't it, personally I think the 'don't tell anyone about these PUBLIC rights of way' attitude is wrong, narrow minded and frankly lazy. 4x4 damage the lanes making them un passable to walkers etc - RUBBISH, frankly I've seen one of these ruined tracks, and yes it was rutted and muddy and oh my god in parts you had to walk right on the edge to get by. I could do it on foot, so could anyone. If you look on the OS maps there are thousand of rights of way that cant be driven on so why shouldn't there be some that cant be walked on? The tracks get ruined - rubbish - aside from littering, dumping fridges burned out cars etc a rack isn't ruined when its muddy or rutted, it's changed, I think people need to get some perspective here. In real terms 4x4 do not ruin tracks even if they do get muddy and rutted, its far less of an environmental impact than filling it with aggregate or scalpings, you might as well fill it with old beer cans. I agree that if you get numpties driving all over farmers land or wrecking bushes and tree's etc its a bad thing, but a ban or controlling who uses these lanes is not the way forward and is an infringement on civil rights and hiding the whereabouts of the few lanes that you are allowed to drive along is just plain selfish. It would be like a blanket ban on firearms because the armed robbery stats go up, when in actual fact 99.9% of legally owned guns are not involved in crime at all. what are they going to do then bad unlicensed guns? the way forward is to educate people, for farmers and forest workers (who tear up the tracks more than anyone else remember) to take measures to protect their land if they dont want people on it (and yes they should have to) and for people to accept that unsurfaced roads will errode, will get churned up, will get muddy - walkers/horse riders, if a road looks too muddy to pass, don't walk down it, find a footpath/bridleway to tiptoe over. Closing all BOATS will not stop people from driving down them, it will just mean that the people who do choose to enjoy these lanes in their 4x4's will be breaking the law - whatever next.
  9. Yep, probably not going to head into the bowl itself. We'll be meeting up tonight so unless your're working the night shift PM me! P.s. I might be a newbie to the forum, but not to laning, been doing it for 17 years!!
  10. Hi Nige, Looks like a few of us will be meeting up in hindhead tomorrow if you're up for it?
  11. If anyone wants to go and have a look one weekend I'd be up for coming along, I know a few in the Liphook/Milford area but I dont think they would be wide enough for a Unimog
  12. Kumho do 305/70/16 in the KL71 tyre which is an awesome tyre. I fitted some of the standard size 235/85/16's on my 90 TD5 and they have been fantastic on and off road! http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?pli...16,_305/70_R_16
  13. Are there any Points of interest databases that can be downloaded for TomTom's of Garmin Nuvi's?
  14. So is someone organising a day out on the plain over Christmas???
  15. Haha, I'm a bloke, I wake up 5 minutes before I leave!!!! Thanks though, I'll have a look at all the options, I think probably a fan heater on a timer is the way to go!
  16. One could also buy a pair of hiking boots and walk those green lanes, but one has a Land Rover to play with so if one gets to enjoy the first 10 minutes of his otherwise boring 14 hour day then one will do so by driving his Land Rover!! I just want better heaters!!!
  17. I cant imagine for a second that this is a new topic, but here goes anyway! I'm a proud new father of a 2003 90 Defender County SW, I love it! But, I commute to work every day, I drive to the train station at a ridiculous time in the morning and that drive is just under 10 minutes, just short enough that the heat just starts to dribble out of the vents as I turn the engine off. Now I'm sure is not a 'fault' as the heater works fine when the engine is warm, but that big lump of cast iron just takes so long to heat up! Has anyone come up with a solution for this outside of electric handwarmers/wood burning stoves or tieing puppies to your hands in the morning?? The only things I can think of are; - Restricting airflow to the radiator for short journeys - buying an inverter and getting an electric heater - getting an aftermarket heat exchanger (still needs the engine to heat up though) - buying some sort of caravan/boat heating system - Fitting an AGA and just having it run 24hrs Has anyone come up with anything more workable, I did think that the heating system in the XS might be better, are there any upgrades available? Cheers Nial
  18. Thats a shame, half the fun was watching people get winched out of holes at 3 in the morning in the middle of nowhere!! I'm not that worried about getting my landy stuck in a big muddy wet hole anymore, just a bit of a challenge and getting out and about will do, I found going out at night more fun too!
  19. Years ago I used to go laning every saturday night with a great bunch of guys. We used to meet up at about 8pm near midhurst or petworth discuss the route for that night then go out and get muddy. All above board and very well organised. Since those days I've kinda lost touch with those guys and am looking to see if anyone else does that sort of thing in the Chichester/Midhurst/Petworth areas, there is me and a couple of other cars that want to play, all experienced, all responsible, all willing to get muddy and have a good laugh (thats what its all about right!!) Let me know !! Cheers Munst
  20. I am heading up to the Brecon Beacons this weekend and would like to do some lanes on Sunday, will anyone be out and about that wouldn't mind me tagging along?
