  1. Mine is currently waiting for a cam shaft seal which I think could be the cause of your leak too. Worth a check maybe.
  2. Ok well I've found out what caused it all and thought I'd post incase it could be useful info for anyone else. First things first, the car started misfiring and overheating at around 70mph after only 2-3 minutes of driving. I pulled over and checked the water of which there was next to none in the engine although it had been checked a week before or so. So I drove it to the nearest garage, obviously quite hot, and proceeded to chuck 3 litres of Evian into it as the free water pump was bust. I finally got the car to my mates garage who noticed that the Thermostat housing was leaking quite badly, so he ordered the thermostat relocation kit and refitted it all, which fixed the leak. Lovely. The car seemed to run fine for a couple of days until it did exactly the same thing one evening. The AA were called who came out and inspected the car but could find nothing wrong with the water system and by the time they'd arrived the car was running fine again. They suggest it could be an intermittent electrical problem and to simply drive the car until it occured again and call them straight away. Which I did the next day when it occured in similar circumstances (Running for 2-3 minutes, car smells hot and misfires even though temp guage is still cold). This time they sent a recovery truck and simply dragged it to my garage of choice, my mates again. This time after some deliberation and thought it became apparent that what had happened is as follows. Thermostat housing cracks. Water empties out of car. Car overheats. Overheating block causes an intermittent fault to develop on Coil pack 2. Thermostat is replaced. Coil pack 2 causes intermittent misfire on Cylinder 4. Coil pack replaced, car is happy. Owner and driver (me) is now looking for a Japanese 4x4 to part ex the Freelander against. So even though the car is now fixed I've decided that it's just too unreliable to keep so I'm looking for something along the lines of a pre 2000 Isuzu Trooper 3.1D or the like.
  3. I'm beginning to think my Freelander may be a duffer. I was driving to work this morning at around 30mph when the car started jerking along as though I was in much too high a gear, or it's firin on three cylinders. Infact I was in third and about to shift into 4th. The engine warning light came on (flashing) so I chucked the hazard lights on and began to pull over. By the time the car had stopped moving 10-15 seconds at a guess, the engine was running fine and the light had gone off. It did this a couple of times on my 30 minute journey, once even at 65mph-ish. Two questions; Firstly the obvious one, does anyone know what this might be? And secondly; Is the car still safe to drive? As I need to get home. Also the engine was cold when this occured the first time but it still occured once the engine had warmed up.
  4. Thanks for all your suggestion I will check out the tests you mention this weekend. One other thing. To get to 70mph with no load in the car it revs at around 3,300rpm. Is this high or normal? I know someone with a TD4 which revs much lower at the same speed, but then again it's a different engine... so I don't know...
  5. Yes, I must apologise I didn't realise my posts needed checking before becoming visible and thought I'd done something wrong. Sorry.
  6. Hey all, I'm new here and new to owning a freelander. Mine is an '02 1.8SE with 60k in the clock. There are a couple of things concering me though. Hill descent mode. When should this be used and why? I flipped the large button on the gear lever down the other and moved off fine, however when i went to shift into 2nd there was a horrible grinding noise and the car tried to stop itself dead. I plunged the clutch in, flipped the large stich backup and drove off fine. Is this normal or is it all knackered? The other thing is when I turn to full lock it feels as though the car simply cant roll. Like it's trying to stop all the time. There is no rubbing on the tyres so I assume they're not coming into contact with the arches. I was wondering is this simply a symptom of a car with VCU and IRD? or is something wrong? Also when turning on full lock every now and again there is a loud clunk from underneath. I have no idea how else to describe it other than it sounds like something being shoved back into place ? Thanks very much. Dave

  8. Hello everyone, I'm new here and new to owning a Landrover Freelander. It's an 02 1.8 Petrol ES with 60k on the clock, and I have some concerns. I've had a mechanic friend who knows a bit about engines, but sod all about anything else, check the car over and he has said that the engine seems to be fine but he doesn't know much about the transmission system, it has FSH which shows a new head gasket 10,000 miles ago. My concerns with the car seem to be more to do with the transmission (I think). There are two issues I have. When making a tight turn at low speeds, for example moving around a car park, the car has a tendancy to try and slow itself down when I come off the power and every now and again there is quite a loud clunk from underneath the car. It sounds like the cornering manouvre pushes something out of place which then slots back in (which causes the clunk). Is this a nightmare or is it normal etc? The other issue is the Hill Descent Mode, now I don't plan on going off road or towing anything so I'll probably never use Hill Descent however I flipped the big yellow gear lever switch the other day and moved off slowly in first gear, just to see what it did, the car travelled normally with the light a solid green, I then went to change gear, still at a very low speed, 10-15 I think. As soon as I depressed the clutch the car seemed to pump the brakes and issued a rather horrendous grinding / crunching noise from the front. I immediately stopped the car, reset the hill descent switch and moved off again this time it was fine. Did I do something wrong? Am I missing the point of what hill descent is supposed to do? Or is it all knackered and waiting to cost me a fortune? Also when I first bought the Freelander (about three months ago) there were some other issues which the second hand dealer had fixed these included, a loud clunking coming from the engine bay on power on-power off. Turned out to be a missing engine mount bolt. A clunking when going over bumps, turned out to be the exhaust sitting on a cross member, and also a couple of seals needed replacing. While the garage were performing the repairs they also told the dealer he needed to get a new front prop shaft which he did and they fitted. List of parts fitted by dealer garage since purchase: Front prop shaft, front CV gators (both), cam shaft seal, prop shaft seal, engine mounting bolts, back box. Thanks very much for any help or advice you can give. Regards Dave
