  1. i just fear this is beyond my capabilities shame !! many thanks again for your comments Peter
  2. Aneroid Compensator:would it be difficult to fit such a device to the pump ? expensive ? diy possible or have it done by bosch ? Peter?
  3. thanks for your remark i'lll look up for your words Aneroid Compensator :this afternoon peter
  4. an interesting idea ! could you briefly explain what deductions you make from reading the temperature levels
  5. your car is equipped like a jetfighter !! sheer curiosity ,unrelated to the subject :could you tell us more about your EGT gauge does it measure the temperature of the exhaust gas ? if yes ,where ? interesting ;more details ,please !!!
  6. not an easy question ,as i can see!! If there is some form of adjustment for air pressure in the injection pump ,would that mean that heavy smoke at altitude=faulty injection pump? or turbo boost pressure ? If the answer is yes ,what should i do about that ?parts to change ? a reminder though ,at ground level ,no problem whatsoever. On the way back from the mountains (550 miles on motorway at 55/60 max mph , she's done an exact 32mpg ,not too bad for an old (1995) lady !!
  7. i am a bit lost now :do you think there is an atmospheric pressure sensor in the 300 tdi ? the extract of the manual isn't 100% clear about this ! and if I there is one ,where is it !! Peter
  8. Hi many thanks for your remarks and documentation Unfortunately ,mine is a 300 tdi and I do not think there is such an AAP sensor !! Peter
  9. Hi Only back to the screen now , sorry !! many, many thanks for your comments :it is good to feel you are not alone with a particular problem!!! seems to be a majority vote for imbalance between fuel and oxygen at high altitude !! BTW : good to see that the military use the good old 300 tdi in their Snatch and LR Wolf vehicles
  10. Hi an interesting technical question which i do not think has been raised in this forum before I'm just back from a trip to the Alps where our flat is at 2100 m (not feet! ) On the way up ,no smoke ,business as usual but on the way down ,heavy smoke when pressing the accelerator pedal ,even ever so slightly When back in town at 600 meters ,no problem again Puzzling I thought about 2 possible explanations : -oil aspirated into the cylinders through worn valve guides ?(but i would have the same smoke problem at sea level ,which is not the case )and she does not burn any oil between oil changes -not enough oxygen in the air to burn the fuel injected into the cylinders (the ECU does not know the oxygen content of the air ),which is more likely Have you had the same experience ? any idea ,advice ? Peter Ps : I also noticed a strong smell of diesel when following other ,more " modern " cars ,although woth virtually no smoke
  11. thanks for your replies belt is cheap ,but replacement is not easy ,particularly removal of bolt on crankcase if you do not have the special tool
  12. Hi has anybody got an idea about how to check the condtion of the belt with timing belt cover in place drill a hole somewhere in the cover ? where best ? other ideas ? peter
  13. unfortunately all broken parts now binned !!
  14. it comes off when you unscrew the bottom piston from the base like you this is what I did not know before !!
  15. i have now bought one on ebay and taken the old one down (wiyh a hacksaw ,to see how it works in fact ,what one shoud do ,is unscrew the bottom piston from the base and evertthing comes off easily after that Obviously ,be very careful not to mark the piston it was O ring on the upper piston that was damaged it would have been simple to replace .Shame I did not know !!
  16. having said that ,the pistons do not want to come off the bottle :pulling ,knocking gently with a mallet :no way the LR jack must be a different system ? Leak is between the thin piston at the bigger one Any suggestions ? Peter
  17. apologies when searching again ,I found this very useful link http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/31260-rebuilding-red-rover-jack-contains-1-2mb-offsite-images.html Peter
  18. Hi ! my 300tdi hydraulic jack is now dead because of leaks Any idea if it can be repaired ? I can't see how to take it down to change the gaskets /seals i know ,new ones cost nothing ,it 's for fun Peter
  19. Many thanks Ches I would never have thought of something like that !! i'll have a little look peter
  20. hi again I should have mentionned :this is a 1995 , 2.5l diesel Discovery peter
  21. Hi Strange : the front electric windows work fine all the time but the rear ones occasionally don't work (either from the centre control panel or from the door panel switch) However,if ,i switch the front ones first on and off ,then the rear ones will work what could the problem be ,you think? Peter
  22. Hi All i am still hoping one of you will come up with an idea!! have a nice week end peter
  23. Hi follwing an energetic high pressure washing of the engine bay the rear windows have stopped working (tried central switches and door switches ) air con seems to have gone as well :air is blown but not cooled at all I have checked the aircon fuse in the engine bay compartment (30A) it was blown and I replaced it but this did not resolve my problems I have now checked all the other fuses ,but they are ok i am thinking may be some of the relays have also gone ? i tried to listen carefully for a click when i press the switch ,but I cannot hear anything (NB:If I press the FRONT window switches,I cannot hear any click either ,but they do work ) I would be very grateful for any advice to may have Peter
  24. haha ,there it was ,hiding !!! just back !I have now tested the battery and ,would you believe ,everything is working fine !! I suppose ,it will do it again ,sooner or later but now ,i' know what to do ! many thanks for the expert advice Peter
  25. curiously ,the battery has now gone !! i do not know if it is because of that electrical window problem ,or because I washed the wheel underach with a high pressure washer Going to test now Incidentally ,different layoput on mine :no ECU i can see behind the glove box see attachment:quite different from what was shown in the previous posts !!
